To refuse to go to work tonight?

I was due my wage today, always on the 13th of each month however it didn't go into my account. My timesheet was submitted and approved on time and have never had this problem before. I contacted my colleagues first to check they had been paid which they had.

I then contacted my line manager who said she would look into it for me. I also contacted the wages department.

This was over four hours ago - I have had no response at all from the wages department and my manager hasn't provided an update on the situation but has emailed me to remind me to attend training next week.

I'm pretty angry, I feel this has been a mess up on their end and at the very least they should be keeping me updated. I was relying on that money today.

Im at the point of saying if it's not sorted by the end of the day then I'm not going to my shift tonight but I'm not sure if that's a very mature way to deal with my frustrations?

At the end of the day though, im not working for free. AIBU?

Well I did once have a colleague in a similar position say he wouldn't be able to afford the bus fare to work that night if he didn't get paid and, funnily enough, it got sorted quickly for him. Maybe say similar rather than you're refusing to come if not paid.

Is it a care agency by any chance. I found the one I worked for notorious for not paying on time or not paying enough.

This would be my approach. You can't put fuel in your car without money.

This sounds like a "glitch" and an error on the part of the accounting department, not an attempt to defraud you out of your wages. So, if you want to be paid NEXT month, then go to work tonight, and continue to press them to get the problem straightened out.

Is there any way that they can advance you part of your wages out of some other account they have, like one set up for emergencies? Or even advance you a "loan" (no interest) until your wages come through? Perhaps even one of your managers can do that.

I understand about not having any savings. For years I lived paycheck to paycheck and it was just a miracle that I was never in a position where I couldn't pay for rent or food because my paycheck didn't come through, but I can understand how precarious some people's living situation is.

Good luck and I hope you get it all sorted out tonight, or tomorrow.

Why should she have savings in case she doesn't get paid ffs?!

Exactly! Couldn’t have said it better myself. Disgusting shaming of someone for an issue that isn’t of their own making.

Ahh nice attempt at shaming me there for having no savings. Many people aren't in the fortunate position to have savings as there isn't a penny left to their name. That's the reality for some people. What an ignorant comment n

That seems to have touched a nerve, I agree with the PP you should work on saving an emergency fund for such situations and to refuse to go to work and burn bridges is immature. If it was a recurring situation or they refused to reciting the issue then yes absolutely to crazy on them but it looks like they acknowledge the issue and are
trying to rectify it right?

look into Dave Ramsey for some small steps to improve your financial situation going forward, living literally paycheck to paycheck is not. Way to live.

I think you should work, mistake

JacquelineCarlyle · 14/10/2022 20:50

I hope they pay you soon Op - it's shocking how you've been treated.

LoisLane66 · 14/10/2022 21:01

Use your overdraft or if you haven't got one, ask bank if you can use unauthorized facility without penalty until problem resolved. If it's only a day or two they're usually ok. Could friend/family loan you a few pounds to tide you over until they sort it if you need petrol/food?
Hope you manage to get into work and get it sorted.

ozymandiusking · 14/10/2022 21:34

I think you need to ring the bank and speak to someone. Many years ago a situation arose where a payment didn't arrive in to my account, and for some reason the Bank had "rejected" it. That was the word used and I never did find out why. But they did promise to pay any interest incurred because of the late payment.

Stewball · 14/10/2022 23:34

That's the quickest way to lose your job. I hear it's east to lose jibs in America. Be sensible. It'll all be sorted.

PinkPanther27 · 14/10/2022 23:54

I hope your pay is sorted now, I had recurring issues with my employer using the wrong tax code every few months and it caused so much stress and worry.
I'm also disgusted at some of the vile commitments on here from a particular person who clearly has no idea how much people are struggling and how savings are now a thing of the past for so many people. If everything goes up except your wages and your bills match or exceed your income it's basic mathematics!
Anyway hope you are sorted now.

itsjustnotok · 15/10/2022 07:53

@JennyForeigner2 indo think you’re ignorant. Not everyone is as fortunate as you. Some people don’t even have enough to make it though a whole month at the moment. Have you been living under a rock?? There are some who exist out there who are using heating and skipping eating so their kids can. They are using food banks in order to eat, sure though, have some savings and go without food an extra couple of days a month! 😡

wombat1a · 15/10/2022 08:36

4 hrs is not enough to go on strike - how to you even know if the payroll person is even in today? The 'right' person to fix your problem may not even be working today - just like you are not.

BTW I them do this to me for 3 months once, when I finally did get paid getting 1/3 of a year all at once really felt good.

mumindoghouse · 15/10/2022 10:55

OP I feel really anxious for you. I hope you have now been paid.

PeachyPeachTrees · 15/10/2022 20:43

I wouldn't expect a message saying it's all sorted after just a few hours but they should have sent a message saying that they are looking into it and will get back to you soon.

Fudgemonkeys · 16/10/2022 11:04

Happened at my place of work, got an apology, would be sorted and told any bank charges incurred would be paid ny them. Mistakes happen. Hope it's sorted soon.
