To refuse to go to work tonight?

merrymerrymonthofmay · 13/10/2022 13:06

I was due my wage today, always on the 13th of each month however it didn't go into my account. My timesheet was submitted and approved on time and have never had this problem before. I contacted my colleagues first to check they had been paid which they had.

I then contacted my line manager who said she would look into it for me. I also contacted the wages department.

This was over four hours ago - I have had no response at all from the wages department and my manager hasn't provided an update on the situation but has emailed me to remind me to attend training next week.

I'm pretty angry, I feel this has been a mess up on their end and at the very least they should be keeping me updated. I was relying on that money today.

Im at the point of saying if it's not sorted by the end of the day then I'm not going to my shift tonight but I'm not sure if that's a very mature way to deal with my frustrations?

At the end of the day though, im not working for free. AIBU?

I don’t think four hours is very long to rectify your problem. If you’re in employment, every once in a while things like this happen. Refusing to work tonight is a perfect example of cutting your nose off to spite your face. Be reasonable, people are far more likely to sort it quickly if you’re polite.

lemmein · 13/10/2022 17:42

I get ya OP, I'm hot-headed too and this is definitely something I would consider in your position, but, it won't achieve anything and presuming you need your job I'd give them a bit longer to sort it out. It sounds like a genuine mistake - sorry if I've missed it but have you tried calling your bank? My nationwide app said yesterday something about payments being late but I didn't read it properly so can't remember the details - do you bank with them?

OP I don’t think not going to work will really solve anything, I would personally be polite but persistent and ask they cover expenses you incur because of this (ie, late rent charges, credit card interest or whatever). My work did this once when majority of staff were earning just above minimum wage. I told my boss we needed to pay tube fare out of petty cash and bought everyone pizzas for lunch. He said something like “no one is living that hand to mouth.” I was pretty shocked at how unaware he was but sometimes I think when it’s been a long time since you’ve lived on a tight income, you forget how tight things are at the end of the month.

Wow shes hardly being vile, shes being realistic, its responsible to put away money- doesnt need to be a lot even a tenner a month but you do need to prepare for things like this.

Sorry pressed post too soon

But expecting a problem like this to be solved the same working day is just unrealistic and threatening to not go in is immature and more likely to land the OP in trouble.

If you physically dont have the money to get to work then by all means discuss this with them and try to come to some arrangement

crosstalk · 13/10/2022 18:04

Go to work if you can. See if not too busy you can speak to the manager and say you need the money immediately or email HR/your manager. Make sure youve checked your bank. Point out you will suffer penalties if the money doesnt come in let alone not be able to eat if you are down on your boonies. Good luck, deep breaths.

pimlicoanna · 13/10/2022 18:14

That's just not a good idea.

momtoboys · 13/10/2022 18:30

I would go in as you normally would unless they tell you that they are not going to give you a check. Mistakes happen.

ThereIbledit · 13/10/2022 18:35

I don't think 4 hours is sufficient time to have waited before deciding that you're not going to go to work. As many others have said it's not that they're not going to pay you, it's that something has gone wrong. It's horrible for you, and potentially expensive for you in bank charges etc, but it is one of those shit happens things.

I would expect a conversation within 24 hours to update me with what happened, and when I can expect my money.

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 13/10/2022 18:35

Have they sorted it OP?

babyfrenchie · 13/10/2022 18:36

Super immature.

ThereIbledit · 13/10/2022 18:36

Also, and I mean this with love as I'm not far off the same situation as you myself... if you stop going in and they let you go, how will you financially manage then?

Happyher · 13/10/2022 18:43

It comes across as very insecure, imagine the impression your boss will have of you if you do

furrytampon · 13/10/2022 19:06

don’t be so childish. mistakes happen ffs

Snog · 13/10/2022 19:07

If you don't go in you will lose a days pay, surely?

ilovebagpuss · 13/10/2022 19:10

If a genuine error they should either make a same day BACS transfer for you tomorrow or pay you a chunk in cash. You should bit be expected to go more than a day over your pay day. It's very bad fir them not to have come back to you at all to apologise and explain. However I would still be going in to work and give them chance to put it right tomorrow.

Cameleongirl · 13/10/2022 19:13

I expect you're already at work, I hope you've gone in?

Definitely keep chasing them up, but don't be awkward.

Iknowforsure1 · 13/10/2022 19:17

I understand your frustration OP, sounds tough.
I would go to work, but I would also write an email stating that this delay has affected you in a bad way and you would appreciate to never be in the position again.

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 13/10/2022 19:20

What's the betting it's the banks fault and the OP is too embarrassed to come back?

Living from one pay day to the next with no buffer is no way to go through life.

Are you genuinely ensconced in such a bubble of privilege that you are ignorant that millions of UK workers are trapped in exactly this situation @JennyForeigner2?

The pitiful minimum wage, & zero hours contracts are such that 4 million British children are living in poverty. Where do you suggest these workers obtain the "buffer" you are so keen for them to have?

You are wrong. I volunteered helping people on very low incomes to try to get their finances in order, and never once came across any person or family that could not have found themselves a buffer if they put the effort in to do so. Instead in pretty much every case people chose not to as they preferred to buy themselves “treats” instead.

They felt that they deserved it, as life was hard, and it took a lot of time and effort to help them to understand that like was likely to be a little bit less hard if for a few months they forewent any of those treats just until they got enough money in savings that something like being paid a few days late would not tip them over into crisis.

Unfortunately there were some beyond help, those like you, who’d just insist that they had no agency at all, that there was nothing that they could do, and so they and their children just went on as they ever had.

It’s interesting how angry some people are getting at the idea that you need to have some savings. There’s nothing at all in the OP’s posts to suggest that she’s not able to do this, and yet apparently it’s “vile” to tell her that if she can do so she needs to get a buffer in place.

Some people you just can’t help.

Dahliasandtea · 13/10/2022 19:37

Go in tonight and show them that you are a professional employee even if they aren’t professional in return and write them an email and put your annoyance and the unacceptability of the situation in writing. Be polite but firm.
But not going into work is just going to mean next month you get less pay. You don’t want to work and not get paid…. Quite right. But Equally they aren’t going to pay you if you don’t work.

niugboo · 13/10/2022 19:39

They’ve made an error and will correct it.

if you don’t go to work you will potentially lose your job. Over a mistake.

Then the OPs wages department or Line manager could have contacted the OP to explain that.

But they really might not, at the time of being asked, know the reason - and as you know yourself - it's really hard to get hold of people and get answers to questions - e.g. I electricity and gas readings in to so.energy on 1st Oct (for my MIL) and they still haven't generated a bill - we have no idea if she is in credit or debit - I've e-mailed them contacted them on twitter, facebook and via their contact form nearly every day for the past 2 weeks and still don't have a clue what is going on - this is modern life in the UK atm. Whatever - the OP needs to act like an adult - honestly a bit of patience on her part will reflect well on her IMHO - doesn't it always?
