To refuse to go to work tonight?

merrymerrymonthofmay · 13/10/2022 13:06

I was due my wage today, always on the 13th of each month however it didn't go into my account. My timesheet was submitted and approved on time and have never had this problem before. I contacted my colleagues first to check they had been paid which they had.

I then contacted my line manager who said she would look into it for me. I also contacted the wages department.

This was over four hours ago - I have had no response at all from the wages department and my manager hasn't provided an update on the situation but has emailed me to remind me to attend training next week.

I'm pretty angry, I feel this has been a mess up on their end and at the very least they should be keeping me updated. I was relying on that money today.

Im at the point of saying if it's not sorted by the end of the day then I'm not going to my shift tonight but I'm not sure if that's a very mature way to deal with my frustrations?

At the end of the day though, im not working for free. AIBU?

@AriettyHomily

Sorry ignore me 😃

gamerchick · 13/10/2022 13:55

Ring your boss and tell them you don't have the money to get into work. Ask them what they suggest.

OurChristmasMiracle · 13/10/2022 13:56

I would advise going to work tonight but emailing requesting an update and a timeframe in which this is likely to be rectified. If it’s going to take a number of days I would be asking whether they will be reimbursing late payment fees etc

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 13/10/2022 13:57

Everyone else has been paid

I bet it's your bank that's the problem.....not going in is ridiculous and a possible disciplinary!

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 13/10/2022 13:57

Ring your bank

Why should she have savings in case she doesn't get paid ffs?!

If that is a serious questions then the answer is that we should all have savings in case something unexpected crops up. That can be a problem with payroll, your employer going bust, an unexpected expense at home, or any number of other events that life is likely to throw up sometimes.

It’s idiotic to go through life without any savings, it’s a recipe to turn a minor event into a proper crisis.

Because she is suggesting not going into work = not getting paid for even more days. If she has no savings, then working less and bringing home less money or potentially losing your job when you have nothing to fall back on is not a smart idea.

DownAtTheBodyShop · 13/10/2022 14:05

You sound very hot-headed.

Have you contacted your bank? It could be an issue on their side. If not, and I’d was an error in work, these things happen and dealing with it in a calm and civil manner is preferable to kicking-off.

What good will missing a shift do? It won’t make your money magically appear, it won’t correct whatever mistake has been made. It’ll just mean you’re down even more money.

Your comment is what’s idiotic. Not everybody is in a position to save, many people can’t afford to live as it is nethermind save. But yet you claim you weren’t shaming the OP…

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/10/2022 14:12

Speak to your payroll department. If they are unable to rectify it before the end of today ask if they can give you an advance or alternatively ask if they can cover any overdraft and interest charges that you might incur as a result of not being paid.
Speak to your bank. See if you can have a temporary overdraft.

Greyarea12 · 13/10/2022 14:13

I get your frustrated but just not turning up will only result in more worry, stress & anxiety by being short a days wages or worse, sacked on the spot. Mistakes happen.

dailyfup · 13/10/2022 14:15

I can understand the frustration, I really can.
I can also understand that you are in a situation where you don't have savings to cover a delayed payment.
However, you would be completely unreasonable and daft to refuse to go into work tonight. Mistakes happen. It will be sorted out.
If you don't go in, you could potentially be sacked and then you will be in a far worse position.

Ponderingwindow · 13/10/2022 14:17

Will you lose a days pay or have to use up a day of annual leave if you don’t work this next shift? That is only punishing yourself. Don’t work indefinitely without being paid, but giving them a day or two to sort the problem is reasonable.

If they can’t get you the pay by tomorrow, I would request a cash advance.

JacquelineCarlyle · 13/10/2022 14:17

I would contact them (whether your manager or HR or both) & tell them that unless they do an emergency transfer, you will be unable to afford to get to work later.

I totally understand that mistakes happen but they should be doing their utmost to fix it, as this is a big deal for you (& in my case would likely leave me with bank charges etc as my mortgage goes out the day I get paid, so that would put me over my approved overdraft!)

Hope you get sorted Op.

Unless you are literally living on brown rice and water then yes, you can save. It’s a choice not to, and it’s an incredibly bad choice, as it exposes you o issues such as the OP is now facing where even getting paid a day late becomes a problem.

Getting angry, as you seem to be, at someone giving sensible advice like this is quite a strange reaction. You know that having some savings is worthwhile, and you know that there’s no reason not to try your damndest to achieve it.

Living from one pay day to the next with no buffer is no way to go through life.

I see, you are just being deliberately goady on here, so nice of you! Enjoy your day.

It’s goady now to give people good financial advice on a thread where the OP is panicking at not being paid exactly on time?

I swear I’ll never understand attitudes like yours, thinking that you have no responsibility to make sensible provisions and then getting upset at people who do.

merrymerrymonthofmay · 13/10/2022 15:23

@JennyForeigner2 you are coming across as patronising and extremely judgemental not to mention very, naive and ignorant. Do you honestly, truly believe that everyone (unless living on water and brown rice Confused) is able to save money each month? Are you having a laugh? Have you been watching the news? People are having to choose between eating and heating their home, but you expect them to be able to save on top of that? People can barely afford to survive so stop your nonsense! You're either a troll or really bloody privileged as well as downright stupid.

YABU and overdramatic, and trying to get out of going to work.

Nobody’s asking you to work for free, there’s just been a simple mistake.

Lougle · 13/10/2022 16:36

I once told my hospital that I'd be down at the cash office at 4pm and would expect them to pay me out of petty cash, when they failed to pay me because they had incorrectly put me as a new starter. They did it.

I wouldn't refuse to go to work, though, because your pay will be docked for the time you miss and it doesn't actually achieve anything.

theemmadilemma · 13/10/2022 16:37

You won't help you're own cause by pissing people off and not showing up. In fact you could well be disciplined for it.

I don't know what size company you work for, but since you mention a wages department I'm guessing a reasonable size. I know in my large company it takes time to get to the right person, get the answer, come back to you etc. As much as it is urgent for you, they need to confirm what's happened first before re-issuing anything.

redskyhaze · 13/10/2022 16:38

You're right - it's not a very mature way to deal with your frustrations 😂

Mistakes happen and it's never happened before (and it's only been a few hours). If it drags on or keeps happening then obviously that's a problem. But surely you can forgive a one off error.

Elmo230885 · 13/10/2022 16:41

You're initial response is very hot headed. Surely if you refuse to go in then you won't be paid and potentially will be disciplined?
You don't say the type of work but surely not going in will put strain on your colleagues and won't do you any favours regarding shift swaps or overtime?
You also don't say that they are refusing to pay you it seems like an error in the system, which is crap, but they will sort it out.

Cats23 · 13/10/2022 16:41

Ive been in this situ but it lasted 6months!!!!
They were paying a wrong account, I had to beg monthly for wages- I was about to pay for my shopping , declined , wages not in...
I was visiting family (3hrs away), wages not in, I refused to go to work on the monday as didnt have fuel money to return ( I did have money) but wanted to show the extent of how it was effecting me, I had a few late fee payment charges too!
My wages were sorted for good , when I refused to go in!

gogohmm · 13/10/2022 16:44

It happens occasionally, I've been paid late a few times. Most employers pay ahead of the date your payment is due eg I'm paid as of the last day of the month but it arrives on 28th to allow for February - this also means if it's late I can't complain (except February)
