To think Molton Brown is horrible

Molton Brown appears to be a luxury brand? But I think the products smell and feel cheap and synthetic. Do people actually like their products or is it just a status thing?

OP posts:
Gazelda · 12/10/2022 19:22

I like them because they smell lovely and a little goes a long way.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 12/10/2022 19:22

I don’t think they smell very nice. They also seem a bit early 00s/low grade spa vibes.

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 19:24

I got a gift set one year and quite liked the products. Too expensive for me to buy for myself. But I'm one of the few on here who doesn't turn her nose up at Baylis and Harding! 😃

LakieLady · 12/10/2022 19:24

I love some of the perfumes, and my SIL bought me several MB shower gels last Christmas.

I swear they're just perfumed washing up liquid. They make my skin so dry and itchy that when I took off a pair of black tights after showering with it, the tights were full of flaky bits of skin, despite using body lotion after my shower. My legs had dandruff!

FatEaredFuck · 12/10/2022 19:33

Yanbu.

I dont think they smell cheap/synthetic but whatever makes them smell nice to some people - smells horrendous (and so strong!) to me Envy

Eatmycake3333 · 12/10/2022 19:38

Iv smelt a lot nicer cheaper bubble baths. Mind you I do like absolute tobacco in MB. I think it’s called that. But other than that I wasn’t really impressed either. I’m liking Avon jasmine just now

Elvira2000 · 12/10/2022 19:39

I agree...I've never really understood the fuss. My sister loves it though because it makes the bathroom smell nice.

SavoirFlair · 12/10/2022 19:41

You’ll just get a queue of people on here trying to sound nonchalant about a product which is established as being rather good for many people.

but go on then, for all those who think MB is a bit rubbish. What’s a good luxury alternative scented shower gel or body wash then?

Asparagoose · 12/10/2022 19:43

It’s tested on animals. So I suppose it’s ok if you feel comfortable using stuff that has been squirted in rabbits eyes.

Almost anything else I've tried! Luxury, Elemis, Espa? I tend to use non luxury for body wash etc.

I dont think MB is horrible. It's clearly luxury and captured a huge part of the market but whatever scent profile they rely on is the opposite of what I like.

pompomdaisy · 12/10/2022 19:48

I like the smell but my skin hates the product unfortunately.

CrackingcheeseWallace · 12/10/2022 19:49

Dried my skin out dreadfully despite loving the smells.

LakieLady · 12/10/2022 19:50

I think L'Occitane and Crabtree and Evelyn are both nicer and more gentle on the skin than MB. I also like an Australian brand called Sukin that they sell in my local health food shop.

Not according to their website:

Cruelty free since 1971
Pioneers in sustainability, we’ve never tested on animals, remaining entirely cruelty free. Molton Brown are proud to be Leaping Bunny approved since 2012. The Leaping Bunny is the globally recognisable gold standard for cruelty free cosmetics and household products, and demonstrates that a brand is genuinely committed to removing animal testing from its supply chain.

Also, a Google search brings up several independent organisations saying they are cruelty-free.

Where is your source for saying they're not?

WonderingWanda · 12/10/2022 19:51

I agree, it's the same as Bayliss and Harding but about 5x the price. Not keen on either of them. I love Neals Yard and L'Occitane stuff though.

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 12/10/2022 19:51

I'm not a fan of the scents but the shower gels do suit my skin really well. They leave it softer & more moisturised than anything else I've tried.

Same here. Can't bear the stuff.

Manekinek0 · 12/10/2022 19:52

I don't like it but then I only really like soap. I do buy the occasional bubble bath from Avon or nice soap from lush.

Ambertonix · 12/10/2022 19:57

I only use the Orange and Bergamot one. It was used in the hotel when i got married so the fragrance of it always evokes good memories. It is very expensive though soi tend to ask for it as a Christmas or birthday gift.

ReneBumsWombats · 12/10/2022 20:00

It always seems nice enough. I doubt I could tell it from Bayliss & Harding in a blind test.

user53852098 · 12/10/2022 20:01

I only like the Christmas one, we use it all year round, it's called Festive Frankincense or something like that, I buy it in the sale after Christmas, a couple of bottles seems to last all year as you don't use much.

BeyondMyWits · 12/10/2022 20:02

I love molton brown, really love a couple of the scents and they stay on the skin for ages. They are too expensive for everyday use, but people I love know I like them, so get me them for presents.

I agree about Sukin, lovely products!

Jijithecat · 12/10/2022 20:03

I find the heavy scents over powering. I prefer Faith in Nature. It smells nicer with the added bonus of being cheaper, plus you can get refills.

@Asparagoose why are you inaccurately stating that they test on animals?
