to think that if curry with na'an is fine then so is curry on toast?

Although judging by the reactions I received at work, you would think not!

Got to work and colleague said "Sorry if I whiff of garlic, had pizza for lunch" and I said "oh I had curry on toast so I wont notice anyway!" and made a joke about us being left alone as we were both stinky.

The look on her face! She genuinely was appalled at the idea of curry on toast. So I asked if she has curry with na'an bread and she said that that was different.

I am not seeing the issue here. Apart from anything else, the crunchy toast is a nice contrast to the curry texture so is preferable imo, plus left over curry the next day always tastes better than when it is made fresh.

AIBU?!

Why not? What do people think coronation chicken sandwiches are but a curry sandwich? Or the curry wraps you get in supermarkets (like Tesco's chicken tikka with onion bhaji one)? Not odd at all.

gretr · 10/10/2022 17:24

Our local Indian restaurant recommended leftover curry on toast with a fried egg on top. Have been ordering extra curry ever since so we have leftovers for breakfast!

WhatALump · 10/10/2022 17:24

Curry on toast is delicious and a perfect way for the cook to taste the curry and make sure it’s up to
standard.
Same goes for bolognaise on toast.

MarigoldMoonStone · 10/10/2022 17:25

I’m not annoyed about it but you deffo can’t compare naan and bread/toast lol

Figgygal · 10/10/2022 17:25

What has the dark Lord brought
That is crazy

ofwarren · 10/10/2022 17:26

Never tried it on toast but I have it on a sandwich which is lovely.

I think Naan and toast are two different things made from the same ingredients 😂 but I would not have an issue with your toast topping.

It's a fancy Sloppy Joe in my book.

wizzywig · 10/10/2022 17:28

Am Asian, often eat curry with toast.

NightsByTheLake · 10/10/2022 17:29

Maybe not commonly eaten, but hardly something to think is that shocking or appalling. Bread/toast is plain so could go with anything really.

shinynewapple22 · 10/10/2022 17:29

Trying to think of something I couldn't/wouldn't eat on toast ...... can't at the moment!

I would also eat curry in a baked potato so I maybe even stranger.

AnApparitionQuipped · 10/10/2022 17:30

I'd probably not toast the bread if I were having this meal, but there's nothing wrong with it.

Curry with chapatis is my favourite way of having it.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 10/10/2022 17:32

Well, it works for Prue Leith - she’s just released a book, Bliss on Toast:

The truth is I love anything on toast. Scrambles (of course), bangers, beans, even tinned sardines. But the more I thought about it the more I realised that anything that tastes good on a plate – coq au vin, curry, steak, baked aubergines, smoked salmon and avocado, all taste even better on toast.

Toast = Bread
Na'an = Bread

Not the same no, but not miles away. I just dont see why one type of bread is ok and another is "revolting"!

So's focaccia and brioche and, like, pumpernickel, but you wouldn't have curry on them. Pairing the right types of things just makes them both better! I hope you never get into an argument with an Italian over how interchangeable different types of pasta are.

That said... curry on toast is a little wrong to me, but far from revolting and I would definitely eat it if there was no naan around.

HangOnToYourself · 10/10/2022 17:34

I'm not a massive fan of toast so it doesnt appeal to me, bit I dont really like curry with naan either. Rice all the way for me

lobsterkiller · 10/10/2022 17:35

Sounds great tbh. I used to eat bolognese on toast, what's the difference?

SophieJo · 10/10/2022 17:36

I like cold Chinese prawn curry on white bread, the next day!

sandytooth · 10/10/2022 17:37

You do you but it sounds horrible

ThatPirateLady · 10/10/2022 17:38

In my youth the local pub used to do a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with a choice of roast dinner or curry.

Toast seems quite pedestrian by comparison

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 10/10/2022 17:38

I do think that we brits compartmentalise food a bit.
Large tracts of the world just eat food and not specific foods at different times of the day.

If you were to announce that you had fish fingers for breakfast then people might look at you agog. Yet, kedgeree and kippers are considered ok!

Curry on toast sounds ace!

sandytooth · 10/10/2022 17:38

It's the crunch. I wouldn't put curry on a poppadom

WhatHaveIFound · 10/10/2022 17:39

I think it's fine and I'm saying that who has been brought up on curries from birth. I have even been know to eat leftover curry with pasta!

My DS would be appalled. In fact he was aghast when I served curry, rice and sourdough last night as we didn't have enough leftover rice for 3. He thought that he should have all the rice and that DH and I should have had the bread.

Wheretheskyisblue · 10/10/2022 17:40

I think the problem with curry on toast is that the toast is absorbant and goes all gooey whereas naan breads keep their texture. Curry on pitta bread would be better.

babba2014 · 10/10/2022 17:40

Indian family here. My family and lots of others eat curry with toast. Naan isn't the go.ti, it's quite heavy. Normally it's chaparral, naan is more with fancy stuff like chicken tikka and seekh kebabs.
I'll have a chicken curry with bread, pitta bread or Chapatti. Never with a naan.

You might not, but I would eat curry with brioche or foccacia or pumpernickel, in the same way I would eat it with naan or roti or chappati or puri or appam or baati.

There are a great many types of bread eaten with curry around the world.

babba2014 · 10/10/2022 17:41

That said not curry on toast but you break away the toast and eat it with lentils etc. I don't fancy it myself but know plenty of Indians who do.
