To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

I’d imagine the drinks were pretty pricey? £37 is expensive - but fish is expensive generally so I’m not surprised. £5 for a decent sized cod fillet at my local fishmonger, so not sure you could make a portion of fish and chips at home for a lot cheaper than the takeaway.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 07/10/2022 13:49

Our local fish and chip shop sells cod and chips for £8..
It's def off our menu!

mummyh2016 · 07/10/2022 13:49

That does seem a little expensive, I'm West Midlands and it would probably be around £25-£30 here.

If it's a full size cod I don't think that's bad. It's probably around £5-£6 here for a mini fish special.

SirChenjins · 07/10/2022 13:52

About normal I think. Fish and chips here are around £8/9, not the cheap dish it once was.

Mardyface · 07/10/2022 13:52

Sounds about right but I wouldn't buy drinks or ketchup - I'd find a coop or something nearby and buy a bottle of ketchup and drinks. I'm guessing that would have saved a tenner.

Also depends how many you were feeding. To me that's enough for five with the portions round here (and I am greedy and fat not one of those mumsnet competitive undereaters).

Cece92 · 07/10/2022 13:54

I'm central Scotland and I'd say it's probably right our fish and chips are £8, pie and chips around £7 the drinks are £1.50 and curry sauce is £2.50 xx

justasking111 · 07/10/2022 13:54

Sounds about right. Many of our chippies are up for sale for this reason. Check Dalton's Weekly in your area commercial sales

Ringadingdingg · 07/10/2022 13:54

Haddock/cod and chips here £10-£12 depending where from. We live by the coast though and the fish is large and very fresh
£5 of your bill was probably drinks and tomato ketchup

makingmiracles · 07/10/2022 13:55

Sounds about standard, we have 2xlarge cod, 2xlarge chips, 2 battered sausages, one savloy and that’s usually around £35

takeout for us is a once in a while treat, Chinese usually costs us around £55

we always stick to our local Chinese or fish and chips mind you as last time we ordered dominios/kfc the total for those both came to around £75!!!

Shamoo · 07/10/2022 13:55

Drinks in any takeaway are a total rip off - go to a newsagent on the way home for them if you can!

But I did a running total and was expecting you to say about £28 so agree it seems expensive!

makingmiracles · 07/10/2022 13:56

I’m in the sw btw

Frida9 · 07/10/2022 13:57

Sounds about right to me, I'm in North East Scotland and you're usually £8-£10 for a standard fish supper, and I'd say £7-£8 for pie and chips. 3 drinks at £2.50 each so not far off what you've paid.

It's definitely gone up in the last few years but so has everything.

Pottedpalm · 07/10/2022 13:57

Were you taking it home? If so definitely don’t het drinks and ketchup. Several cafes we use give sachets of salt, vinegar, sauces on the side table with serviettes. I usually have a few spare ketchup in my bag 🙂
Otherwise find grocery place as pp said

InCheesusWeTrust · 07/10/2022 13:57

Food prices nad bills are not rising just for households.

Aggypanthus · 07/10/2022 13:58

Yes ! Our local chip shop has regular f&c for £8.75 and small f&c for £6.25. They have introduced a new batter which makes the fish look bigger and is unappetising anyway.
The last lot we bought was £37 and some pence for fish and chips twice and a fish and two sauces and we did not enjoy at all so it will be a while before we bother again if ever actually

HuzzahIndeed · 07/10/2022 14:00

So between average and a little expensive then but not excessive. Ouch.

It was nice but added to the occassional treat list then.

GetOffTheRoof · 07/10/2022 14:00

Small fish and chips with curry sauce is £9 in our only decent chippy.

So £18 for two of us. It's no longer a cheap hot meal, that's for sure.

QuebecBagnet · 07/10/2022 14:00

Sounds about right to me.

i was in the co-op earlier which I know is expensive and a fresh pizza is £6.50. I swear they were £4.50 recently. To me that’s getting on for take away prices in my mind but I haven’t had a take away pizza for ages and I suspect they’re no longer £8! 😂. I didn’t buy one, will stock up next time I’m in Aldi.

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 14:01

Think of all the energy it takes to heat that oil up.

Round my way (midlands) fish and chips (large) which is a very significant meal for 1 person is £8.50.

I still think it is probably the lowest cost takeaway.

The large fish and chips I buy could feed two people as a normal meal - I don't eat for a whole day before having it, so that is a takeaway for £4.25 each. That is hard to match in curry/chinese/pizza etc.

andymary · 07/10/2022 14:02

Canned drinks in chip shops these days can be £1.50 a can, that's £4.50 in drinks alone. £2.00 for your curry sauce, maybe 25p a sachet of sauce.
£7.50 just for the Extras.

Pies and Pasties seem to have shot up in price too. Used to be £2 for a pasty, £2.50 for a pie. Now I see £3.50 - £3.99 for a pasty and £3.99 - £4.50 for a pie!

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 07/10/2022 14:03

That's hugely expensive!

We had a chippy a few weeks ago :

1 x Sausage & chips
1 x Chicken tikka and chips
1 x Extra large portion of chips

= £11

I was shocked that it was so cheap! This was in the Midlands. Where I live in Scotland, it would have been double.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2022 14:03

Or electricity, or oil if they use that for frying. Potatoes have also gone up a lot, it's not just fish, meat and oil that's increased.

I expect that keeping a great vat of fat at frying temperature all day is quite pricey. The chip shop in our village has reduced it's opening hours slightly, presumably so they can switch the fryer off earlier.

It looks like around a tenner for the fish and chips, maybe £7-8 for the pie and chips, a quid or two for the sauce packets and £1.50-2 each for the drinks.

It is what it is, but you can shave a little off the cost by buying your drinks and sauce in a supermarket and think about the amount of meals you buy - unless you're a very big eater or actually want the leftovers, you don't need a full portion for each person usually.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 07/10/2022 14:03

Just looked at what it would cost in my local chip shop (SE England). £35.40 not including sachets of ketchup as they don’t seem to sell them - so very similar to you.

£8 for a regular cod and £3 for regular chips - it’s the chips that shocked me more.

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 14:04

How many people on here can actually eat a large fish and chips in one go ?

I don't think there is anywhere recently that I have been to where I could handle a large fish and chips as a normal meal - if I starve myself I can.

It's also worth noting the large is much better value than the small typically.
