Anyone else going to jail?

Never usually answer a call from an unknown number but I just did: it was a recorded message with lots of terms you never want to hear, HMRC, jail term, prosecution, I did panic a bit and pressed one to hear more, better make sure I suppose. A nice lady from "Her Majesty's Revenue and Custom' asked for my full name so she could check my file, I said she should know it since they called me, the line went dead. I'm not going to jail am I? Anyone else?

I couldn't sing a true note if my life depended on it. Even a cats chorus would chuck me out. Fed up of scam calls, one day I sang my version of "I will always love you" to them at top volume. My husband overheard and thought I'd gone mad. But no calls since. Funny that.

I kept DH's phone number after he died, and got a few calls on there asking for him from those accident ambulance chasers, I told one of them he could engage the services of Doris Stokes and take the cost out of any compensation that was due. I also once kept them on by inventing an accident that involved heavy snow (it was summer) and then when he asked for details, I said it had just been me in the car and it was a fatal accident, I was speaking from beyond the grave. They put the phone down on me ☹️😂

I had this one, there is a warrant out for my arrest. Asked them for the reference number and I'd nip down to custody downstairs (when I worked in a police station) and ask them to arrest me. Could quite fancy a quiet nap in a cell to be honest...

Phone went dead, to the surprise of literally no one.

Well if it makes you feel better OP, I'm in trouble due to my NI being used fraudulently, HMRC want to talk to me and I still haven't paid the £1.99 I apparently owe to Royal Mail for a parcel they're holding*.

I think I'm on the Britain's Most Wanted list.

*all calls/texts received on a phone not registered in my name.

I had one of those. It is definitely a scam. Luckily I had seen a post on social media warning people about it just a couple of weeks before so I didn't fall for it. But it sounds so realistic and it was easy to see how some people are taken in.

Ultimately, no legitimate organisation phone you over this issue if they suspected you of wrongdoing.

If anyone ever rings you up out of the blue asking for money/bank details, you should never give it. It will almost certainly be a scam. Hang up. If you are unsure, check online that the company exists and is legitimate. And then ring them back on the websites number.

And use a different device to ring the website number. Mobile devices may be fine, but older landlines can leave it connected until the original caller has hung up.

Hmrc don’t phone you. They send you letters to get you to phone them and keep you on hold for an hour before you speak to useless fuck number 1 who tells you that’s not their department so they transfer you and you wait a further 20 mins on hold to speak to fuckwit number two …. and so on and so on.

Damn it I'm such a fool to have worried for even a second! I would never give any of my details over the phone. Remember when the banks used to call you out of the blue but then first wanted to verify your details before saying whatever they had to say 😕? I never played.

My husband is saying exactly what you're saying @HighlandPony.
-'Obviously HMRC would never call you'
-'How do you know that?'
-'Because it's on their website.'
-😐

I like the idea of befriending a prisoner. Maybe I could write to you? 😆

I'm sick of waiting considering there's been a warrant out for my arrest for at least a couple of years.

“Obviously hmrc would never phone you”

because that would be spending money on their phone bill then, not yours. Twenty five quid I’ve spent on the phone to them since baby was born in July. I’m sure twenty quid of its purely hold time. It’s charged at a local rate too so you can see how much time it is. Also, they only hang up on you if you ask them for your rebate for overpayment 🤐

It's a scam. For a start it would not long be 'Her Majesty'. HMRC dont just call you and threaten that you will go to jail. If you owe them money and are employed they simply adjust your tax code and you have to contact them if you think it's wrong.

My late father had an email from the 'UK Police Force' who said he had been watching porn and had to pay a fine to avoid being jailed.

I haven't had a call from an ambulance chaser for a while. The last time, he asked if the accident I had been in was serious and I told him yes, very serious. I died. He hung up. 🤣

So it's all coming out now: my husbands gets calls from 'the Chinese Embassy', announced in English, then they start talking Chinese. Someone out there really overestimates him.

So sorry @CaptainMyCaptain. I had these on my work email, they even had been filming me and they were going to send the film to all my contacts if I didn't pay up. Forgot to follow up so not sure what happened.
