Anyone else going to jail?

Never usually answer a call from an unknown number but I just did: it was a recorded message with lots of terms you never want to hear, HMRC, jail term, prosecution, I did panic a bit and pressed one to hear more, better make sure I suppose. A nice lady from "Her Majesty's Revenue and Custom' asked for my full name so she could check my file, I said she should know it since they called me, the line went dead. I'm not going to jail am I? Anyone else?

I'd be doing time for murder if I caught up with any of these scamming scum.

annonymousse · 06/10/2022 13:11

Yeah apparently there is a warrant out for my arrest and I'm being hunted down as I type. 🥴

zingally · 06/10/2022 13:12

Yes! It's a scam. I had a flurry of those a year or so ago. Funnily enough, the arrest warrant out for me never appeared...

Trainbear · 06/10/2022 13:16

Make the most of the nice free heat in prison, and all that food. Decent gym equipment too.

Mythologies · 06/10/2022 13:17

I am not going to jail because when they told me the police were coming round to arrest me, I said they would have to catch the 43 bus I was on first

Not a scam call but one of those dreadful "you've been in an accident calls" from a well known ambulance chasing firm in the North West. Had a chat with the guy as I was feeling bored and thought it might be fun to waste his time so he didn't bother anyone else. I explained the case was complicated and I really needed to discuss it with a lawyer. He told me that he was a lawyer and could advise me. I asked if he was a solicitor or a barrister. Oh no he was neither but the firm employed them. I pointed out that saying you were a lawyer when you weren't was a criminal offence. He hung up on me. Cue a very firm conversation with the firm's very embarassed Compliance Partner........

I had one of those. Stung the woman along for about ten minutes explaining the impact the accident had had on me, how if had to quit work and was stuck in the house because I didn't have the car any more. Laid it on really thick, you know.

She called me a fucking cunt and hung up when I asked it it made any difference that I'd downed a bottle of vodka and popped a a couple of mollys before driving. 🤣🤣🤣

Somanysocks · 06/10/2022 13:27

Yes, had the HMRC 'you're gonna be arrested ' call. I also found out the other day by text that I have a child (I don't).

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/10/2022 13:28

I've had this loads of times. It is very scary sounding though.

BuildersTeaMaker · 06/10/2022 13:28

The one that gets me though is the scam DPD type messages
I was expecting a delivery I knew was form DPD…got a email into junk form DPD ….it smelt fishy as it asked me to confirm my address….but I still then had to ring DPD myself to check it was a scam and not a genuine email saying they needed info.
was on hols for 20 mins. What a #@%*ing waste of my time
and yep, I was right it was a scam and my delivery didn’t need me to provide anything.

grrrr

mrsjg · 06/10/2022 13:29

I got a scam call, automated voice can't remember who from promising all manner of bad stuff, police, arrests etc. What I remember most was the call ending with "God bless" 😁

BuildersTeaMaker · 06/10/2022 13:30

I enjoy saying “why?” Repeatedly if I have time on my hands. First couple of whys, they get quite enthusiastic in telling me stuff, third why they sort of get a bit perturbed. By the 4th or 5th the penny is dropping (usually) …and yes they do start swearing at me…
nasty little shits.

Butchyrestingface · 06/10/2022 13:31

Not yet but the day is still young.

Danikm151 · 06/10/2022 13:32

You can avoid getting these calls why registering with the tps or telephone preference service. Massively reduced the number of calls I got!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/10/2022 13:34

Had a few of these over the past couple of years. If I'd been wanted by the police on any of these occasions I'm assuming they'd have come to my house and arrested me.

TheOrigRights · 06/10/2022 13:39

I think the last 400 voice messages on my land line before I stopped using the thing entirely were from the HMRC.
Oh them and the one family member who only uses a landline!

NeversmileataCrocodile · 06/10/2022 13:41

Thanks @Danikm151

@mrsjg 😂

I too am going to jail. Although they seem to be taking an awful long time to arrest me. Must be all those Tory cuts.

Doowop1919 · 06/10/2022 13:46

I probably would've given my name as Al Capone.
These people get so angry when you mess with them

NeversmileataCrocodile · 06/10/2022 13:49

@StrawberrySquash see you there I guess but don't worry @PuttingDownRoots has us covered, she's sending us a saw in a fruitcake.

Somehow I always felt it would happen to me one day.

DD had one of the accident ones and said "yes the accident was horrific, I sadly died"
The guy on the phone said "I'm so sorry to hea..." then silence and DD said "booo"
He put the phone down.

I had one of the slow internet ones I strung along for ages because yes me internet was very slow. I then asked him to ask me security questions as I'd had an email about scammers and he asked me how big my husbands dick was and hung up!

Pigsinmuck · 06/10/2022 13:54

Yep me!

3 square meals a day prepared for me and the ability to use the toilet without a child keeping me company… I’m there!

GeorgeorRuth · 06/10/2022 13:55

DH is getting on, in poor health and home all day. The first time he had one of those calls he rang me at work in tears, panicking. He wanted our bank details to pay the debt before the police turned up! He was in such a state my boss let me go home. The bastard rang back just as I got through the door to have another go..oh boy I let rip! Fucking bastards!
DH still rings me every so often to tell me £££ has been taken from our account, he has had a message..every time I have to say 'scam'..
This is something that really needs to be treated seriously, these bastards prey on the vulnerable.

CheezePleeze · 06/10/2022 13:55

Did you not scream HIS Majesty actually?! 😂

ElsaPink · 06/10/2022 13:56

I’ve had this and am deeply disappointed there wasn’t some truth in it. Not quite a spa day, but a nice break for someone else.

Ithoughtthiswastherehearsal · 06/10/2022 13:56

Oo I’ve had this.

The idea of any government department, let alone HMRC, being organised enough to proactively telephone people, cracks me up.
