AIBU to wonder why Lidl smells sooo bad? I on occasionally shop in there and went on the weekend. Bought the usual random stuff of essentials like chocolate, fishing boat etc but omg, the smell! Noticing it more this time and the smell has permeated through the house. What is it?? Smells like dog biscuits Confused

In our city Centre one it just smells a bit rank but our local one is very clean and just has a Lidl smell that’s hard to describe - sort of sweet and vanilla but in an slightly off putting way. There is definitely a Lidl smell, was thinking of it yesterday.

inappropriateraspberry · 06/10/2022 07:24

I think it's just your local one. Ours just smells of supermarket!

LovelyDaaling · 06/10/2022 07:26

Ours doesn't smell of anything. Did you check your shoes?Wink

Flaunch · 06/10/2022 07:26

French supermarkets always smell like bins dispite being spotlessly clean. I’ve never noticed lidl smelling but if I’m going to have a moan about them in really annoys me that their have their air con set to 10° in the summer so you have to put a coat on to venture inside 😆

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/10/2022 07:28

no mine doesnt smell
our local coop sadly does

Sunnyqueen · 06/10/2022 07:29

I only use our one probably once a month and I've never noticed a smell. As for the aircon thing a pp mentioned it's our Sainsburys that's absolutely freezing all year round! This stuff must just vary from branch depending on who's in charge.

bonzaitree · 06/10/2022 07:30

Ours is new. No smell. I think you just got unlucky.

LadyMaid · 06/10/2022 07:32

Your LIDL sells fishing boats?

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 06/10/2022 07:33

Do you live near me?
Our local Lidl has a very odd smell as you go in the door. I hadn't been able to quite describe it, but dog biscuits does come close. Stale dog biscuits. It's a weird smell that seems to hit me in the back of the mouth and make me not want to breathe, if that makes sense! It's worst right by the entrance and then lessens off.

FloorWipes · 06/10/2022 07:36

It’s the same smell as a lot of European supermarkets but I’ve never been able to figure out what it actually is.

user26189065 · 06/10/2022 07:38

Probably the smell of cheapness, cheap clothes shops and shoes shops have a certain smell also. I cannot comment on Lidl as I have only been in one once many years ago

Surroundedbyfools · 06/10/2022 07:42

Omg I’ve finally found someone saying the same as me ! Yesss ! Every single Lidl I’ve ever been to has this horrible rotting wet cardboard, dog biscuit smell. I’m not a fan of Lidl so only ever in for one or two things but it is so gross

Sniffypete · 06/10/2022 07:44

Our Lidl just smells of the bakery which is nice (but makes me feel hungry...) but it's only a few years old.

Ponoka7 · 06/10/2022 07:47

Like a pp, you just smell the bakery as you walk in. It is very clean, the staff are always moving the middle isle cages out and cleaning under them etc. I haven't noticed a smell in Heron or Farmfoods, both are cheaper than Lidl.

Ha yes they do! I can smell it now!
I think it's all the deli cabinets of fresh food . Eye meltingly disgusting lovely stinky cheese. Fresh fish and shellfish. Get a drop of that juice somewhere and even with a thorough clean it's going to honk for all eternity.

AriettyHomily · 06/10/2022 07:51

Two near me, they both smell but as I smells worse.

Vampirethriller · 06/10/2022 07:51

Ours just smells of the bakery at the entrance, I like it.

AlsoknownasOther · 06/10/2022 07:52

Every one I've been in smells vile. I could go to their bakery every morning for a cheaper breakfast, but no.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 06/10/2022 07:53

Wow. I think you’ve just unlocked something in my unconscious. They DO smell. I’ve always hated Lidl and could never put my finger on it!

Windbeneathmybingowings · 06/10/2022 07:55

its true. We walked through a Turkish food centre recently that had the European shop smell. My son commented on it and he’s only seven. “It smells like holiday in here!”

Charlize43 · 06/10/2022 07:59

Ours smells of baked bread as have free standing units where they bake rolls and stuff

I find it hard to believe that a supermarket smell would permeate through your house... maybe it's in your head. You could also try shopping elsewhere for a while and see if that makes a difference?

Jelly4444 · 06/10/2022 08:03

Yes! I'm in Dublin. Lidl smells here too. Even the brand new one near my house stinks. No idea what the smell is but it reminds me of going to to French / Spanish supermarkets when I was a kid.

girlmom21 · 06/10/2022 08:06

It's all the farts produced by peasant food.

Twilightimmortal · 06/10/2022 08:06

Its the bakery mixing with the open fruit and veg. Let's off mad smell

Lagattolove · 06/10/2022 08:06

Can’t see I’ve noticed at our local one. Do they have the flowers at the entrance. Could it be that they don’t change the water and it’s stagnant?
