AIBU to wonder why Lidl smells sooo bad? I on occasionally shop in there and went on the weekend. Bought the usual random stuff of essentials like chocolate, fishing boat etc but omg, the smell! Noticing it more this time and the smell has permeated through the house. What is it?? Smells like dog biscuits Confused

All the ones round me smell like Cheap disinfectant scented bread.

It’s the same smell as a lot of European supermarkets but I’ve never been able to figure out what it actually is.

Carrefour in St. Malo has a weird almost cat-food smell that permeates through the shopping centre it's in Confused

I definitely associate a smell with LIDL. It's not somewhere I go often but we have 5 local stores and I have been in the all over the space of a few years. I have super sensitive autistic nose though so I appreciate not everyone will smell the same when they go places.

DrDetriment · 06/10/2022 08:20

Lidl definitely has a small. A mixture of bakery, cold meats and cheese.

I love the fact that you pop into your local Lidl to pick up essentials like fishing boats OP...

There is definitely a specific Lidl smell. I used to hate it, but now I quite like it as it reminds me of going into supermarkets abroad, which are always exciting.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 06/10/2022 08:36

Your LIDL sells fishing boats?

Brilliantly this is probably not a typo. Love an Aisle of Random buy.

These threads are getting really tedious. is now the time? When so many people are worrying about money? is there a need for these constant Aldi is scummy and Lidl smells of shit threads? If you can afford to shop at Waitrose just get on with it and STFU.

PhilistineWazzock · 06/10/2022 08:39

The smell of the Aisle of Shite!

It's odd, our Lidl smells like the Coop did when it was on that site - except they tore down the Coop building to build Lidl so it's not even the same building. It's a grocer's smell - old veg and not much ventilation.

The newer one further away just smells of bakery.

Threadkillacilla · 06/10/2022 08:40

Pallets.
Ours has a wooden pallet smell.

My local Sainsbury's has a very bad smell in the cheese aisle, if that helps?

thecatsthecats · 06/10/2022 08:43

Hmm, yet another thread about Lidl, after Aldi replaces Morrisons in the Big 4.

Methinks that someone works for a PR department, and thinks that "yeah, mum's, that's who to target".

Cheeselog · 06/10/2022 08:44

Ours doesn’t smell of anything 🤷‍♀️ We have a lot of greengrocers/ethnic stores nearby which do get a rotting veg smell
sometimes though.

CourtneeLuv · 06/10/2022 08:46

Mine smells of bakery Confused

LOL, I know about the Lidl smell because I shop there, all the time.

I note many aspects of their model that allows their (usually) cheaper prices. We are not fools, thank you!

minticecreamisjustok · 06/10/2022 08:50

Ours smells like it hasn't been cleaned since it was built, thick grime in the baskets , dirty floors. I buy top up shopping that is well wrapped but I wouldn't buy the loose bakery items, that's the only part that smells nice but have seen so many people grabbing with their hands and worse.

What else are they grabbing the bakery items with if not hands...?

Maggiethecat · 06/10/2022 08:55

Our local one is fine (new). Never used to be a fan but go there now for things like loo roll, garden plants, bulbs and the middle aisle.
Got some really nice Italian type savoury biscuits yesterday.

Tongs?

Favouritefruits · 06/10/2022 09:05

I think it’s smells ‘yeasty’ I think it’s from the bakery but I agree with you it doesn’t smell pleasant!

MissPinkCakeyBun · 06/10/2022 09:06

Morrisons also has a weird smell in my opinion.
It's can be due to how often they clean the warehouse area at the back of the store. Some companies/ managers have a regular clean others do it's as required and sadly have become nose-blind to the stale smell.

Coastalcreeksider · 06/10/2022 09:09

I've shopped in Lidl for well over a decade and I can't say I've ever noticed a particular smell.

The one nearest to me has the bakery just inside the door on one side and veg and fruit etc. on the other side. So if I notice any smell, it would be baked items or veg/fruit.

I'm going to Lidl later this morning, I will definitely have a good sniff as I go in! 😁

ChagSameachDoreen · 06/10/2022 09:11

Lidl is so NOISY. Always some sort of alarm going off.

JJsdadisatwat · 06/10/2022 09:12

My ex husband used to say it smells of poor people and desperation. The great unwashed.

Yea, he’s a fucking bellend, and he’s rich and I am poor so it was just a dig that I shop there and Aldi (happily) and he, for some unknown reason, used to send me photos of the M&S shops he did for ds when he was staying with him with the caption “a change for ds from the cheap crap you buy him!”

Joke was, ex and his new wife couldn’t cook and ds couldn’t wait to come home because he lived off chocolate and crisps from the shop when he visited once a month, it was so vile. He couldn’t wait to get back to my freshly cooked, delicious, cheap crap.

Fuck, I’m glad ds is over 18 now so I don’t have to put up with that shit any more.

HeythereDelilah101 · 06/10/2022 09:12

I hate it too. Can’t quite describe what it smells of but I hate it lol
