Morrisons also has a weird smell in my opinion.
It's can be due to how often they clean the warehouse area at the back of the store. Some companies/ managers have a regular clean others do it's as required and sadly have become nose-blind to the stale smell.

Oh, yes, the Morrisons I went into once on holiday stunk, put me right off, we haven't got one locally so don't use it

Parkmama · 06/10/2022 09:16

Ours smells weird too, I think it's the bakery

Primroseprimula · 06/10/2022 09:16

The vestibule of my local morrisons smells like sewage, it's really unpleasant!

French supermarkets always smell really cheesy to me but not unpleasantly so

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 06/10/2022 09:17

Our Lidl has a bakery so it just smells of lovely bakery smells!

Mountainhike · 06/10/2022 09:21

I’ve noticed this too. Is it burnt chocolate from their chocolate pastries in the bakery isle?

TokyoSushi · 06/10/2022 09:23

I actually don't go there because of the smell!

EfficientDynamics · 06/10/2022 09:23

My local smells of fresh bread and pastries, I'm not complaining

Candymay · 06/10/2022 09:25

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 06/10/2022 07:33

Do you live near me?
Our local Lidl has a very odd smell as you go in the door. I hadn't been able to quite describe it, but dog biscuits does come close. Stale dog biscuits. It's a weird smell that seems to hit me in the back of the mouth and make me not want to breathe, if that makes sense! It's worst right by the entrance and then lessens off.

Maybe you both live near me! It’s an awful smell. Worst by the entrance but it’s very strong. I don’t enjoy going there. I’m presuming it’s the bakery but it’s not a nice smell. It’s sort of deep and rotten.
maybe dog biscuity - I am not familiar with that smell.
but they should do something about it. The poor staff In particular the security man. He’s in the worst position for the smell.

Damnautocorrect · 06/10/2022 09:26

Mine smell like French hypermarkets of my youth

yetanothercleverusername · 06/10/2022 09:29

Our local Lidl is one of the new style ones with the bakery just inside, but even so, there is still that smell of general unfreshness when you walk in before the waft from the bakery almost but not quite wipes it out.
For balance, our local Tesco really stank of fish for months, just as you walked in (where the fruit and veg is, nowhere near the fish counter), then it would lessen as you got further round. I always wondered if a disgruntled employee had secreted a fish somewhere in the aircon system on their last day.

prettybird · 06/10/2022 09:47

Only thing my local Lidl smells of is croissants or bread from the bakery at the entrance. Confused

Do almost all my shopping there: only go to Sainsbury's every 3-4 weeks (when I need to fill up) for the few things I can't get at Lidl. Used to need to go to Sainsbury's to get freshly squeezed orange juice but now Lidl stocks it. Ditto with organic chicken (not a weekly purchase Wink). So we still manage to eat well while spending less Smile

Tried the local Aldi when it opened but preferred Lidl.

xogossipgirlxo · 06/10/2022 09:53

Mine seems OK. Fridge broke in my local Tesco express once. God, it was vile.

Squashpocket · 06/10/2022 10:02

The SPAR I once worked in smelled horrible. It was because they mopped the floor with the same filthy mop every night. Disgusting.

ChurryBun · 06/10/2022 10:09

The Lidl bakery smells disgusting, I don't know how they've made such a pleasant smell so horrible. That mixed with the ride on mop stinks of off milk and the fridges have a weird broken fridge smell even though they aren't broken.
One of my DC heaves whenever we go in Lidl, I have to put vick under his nose!

RealDeeBliss · 06/10/2022 10:18

Used to go to a Carrefour that smelt of chervil, can still smell it now

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 06/10/2022 10:20

This is weird.

However I can't stand the smell that comes from Subway. It makes me feel sick!

I worked in the office above Subway. You couldn't even open the window in the Summer, smell was horrible.

Whatwouldscullydo · 06/10/2022 10:25

Oh god yes. So much yes. We have 2 lidls and 2 aldis and they all smell. It's bizarre. I cant quite define the smell. Maybe it's the meat as I find their meat always smells and tastes funny. Kwik save if anyone remembers that used to smell too.

Maybe it's cos they are smaller than the main ones like tesco and asda so there's less space to disperse of said smells ?

They also have the poorest stock control of any supermarkets I've ever been in so fruit and veg is regularly in a poor state on the shelves. That can't help.

We rented a flat above a subway once. The smell permeated everything.

When we moved, we had to deep clean our sofa twice to get rid of the smell.

PuppyMonkey · 06/10/2022 10:30

I’ve never noticed a Lidl smell before but there is a Heron Foods near me which distinctly smells of the 1970s. As in, I’m transported right back to going shopping with my mum as a child. They should bottle it imho.

StapFooterin · 06/10/2022 10:48

No horrible, smelly Lidls where I live in NI. They smell of fruit and vegetables in the fruit and vegetables section, cardboard boxes in the cereals section, bread in the bakery section etc. Just normal. The aisle of weirdness in the middle smells of impulsiveness though🤣🤣

hanketypankety · 06/10/2022 11:48

LadyMaid · 06/10/2022 07:32

Your LIDL sells fishing boats?

Lol, I love the middle isle randomness

I do wonder if it's the meat as I bought 2 steaks and as soon as I packed them in the bag I could smell this weird smell. Said bag obviously then carried smell home and I could smell it for days! Steak tasted nice though Blush

Ours smells like a bakery. Nice!

PotterLottery · 06/10/2022 11:52

Ooh I actually love the lidl smell (the one near me anyway) it reminds me of being on holidays in Spanish supermarkets. Fresh bread and something else similar.
