I don't think I'm being unreasonable. She's put everything out there to safeguard children in the face of vile misogyny and cowardice from many of her fellow writers.

She also always has beautiful hair.

Just to add - all of the arguments currently being directed against trans people are exactly the same as the hatred and bigotry previously (and still currently) directed at gay people. If you genuinely believe trans people should have fewer rights/are sick/paedophiles etc you're spouting exactly the same nonsense that people used to aim at gay people.

You've learned nothing from the past and you're on the wrong side of history.

You clearly don't understand the issues just fine if that's your take.

Knittingmonster · 06/10/2022 10:46

So what rights do transpeople want that they currently do not have and everyone else has?

The question that is never answered. Confused

Winecrispschocolatecats · 06/10/2022 10:53

Well, I believe trans men are indeed men. But that's beside the point. If someone who looks, dresses and sounds like a man is in the women's bathroom, how would you feel? Would you be uncomfortable? Because they're only doing what you want - using the bathroom assigned to their biological sex. Would you ask for physical evidence they're not actually a man (in your view) before carrying out your business?

You can't have it both ways - if you want trans women to use the men's bathroom (because they're men) then trans men would be using women's bathrooms, because you say they're women.

Transphobia is based on ignorance and fear. Like homophobia and racism.

@Winecrispschocolatecats Your post is the one based on ignorance. 97% of trans women retain their penis and testicles.

Why do you feel that Hijabi wearing women, vulnerable women, DV and rape survivors should have a person with a penis and testicles in the bathrooms AND CHANGE ROOMS?

Answer that. And try some critical thinking, ask yourself why you believe feminists who fought blood, sweat and tears for safe spaces for women, were 'wrong' and you are right?

Thanks for your reply. I understand the issues just fine.

If you think women don't deserve our human rights and safety and dignity, you don't understand the issues at all. To be honest, you sound brainwashed and deeply ignorant to the risk of men in women's spaces.

You've fallen for the belief that the vocal minority reflect the view of everyone. My DD is 21 and loves JK.

I've always been lukewarm about her but in recent times and in the present climate I've got her back, all the way 👊

Yes I think there's this strange thing where people who spend a lot of time on Twitter think that it represents the real world. Most of the people I know aren't even on Twitter.
People who 'shout the loudest' on twitter get lots of attention, that doesn't mean that people agree with them.
I liken it to the crazy person shouting and ranting on the street corner - just because people can hear them doesn't mean they agree.

Winecrispschocolatecats · 06/10/2022 11:05

CatsandFish · 06/10/2022 10:54

@Winecrispschocolatecats A trans man is a woman, and not a physical threat to us.

Why do you think we women fought to have these spaces, in the first place? Because any man, no matter how he 'identifies', can pose a threat to women. Women escape from men in the ladies, we have period issues, we can cry and/or sober up there, we can change there. Free from the eyes of men.

Why do you think that is such a bad thing? Honestly, for the gender identity supporters out there, why is women being vulnerable and needing safe spaces such a 'bad' thing?

Interesting. So you're unaware that some trans men have fully functioning penises? OK.

But, as we're not actually checking people's genitalia (not in the loos I've been in, anyway) someone who looks and sounds like a woman is surely going to be far less triggering than someone who looks and sounds like a man?

Many of you will have shared public spaces, including bathrooms, with trans people without having a clue.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 06/10/2022 11:05

Well, I believe trans men are indeed men.

But they aren't. They're biological women which is why they are trans men. And they are not a threat to women.

I am highly unlikely to be assaulted by a transman.

As a transwoman is a biological man the likelihood increases as, whilst not all are predators, the offending rate is the same as a non transwoman. And while I know not all biological men are predators unfortunately those I have encountered in life did not advertise this to me so there's no way to know.

Therefore as anyone with an ounce of common sense knows this is why SEX SEGREGATED spaces are a very, very good idea.

Winecrispschocolatecats · 06/10/2022 10:58

Thanks for your reply. I understand the issues just fine.

Oh good, please could you explain something to me then please.

I think a woman is defined by biology, ie an adult human female.

You consider that a woman is not defined by biology but by something else.

So please can you explain to me what constitutes a woman? What do all women and transwomen have in common that they do not have in common with any men or transmen?

Honestly, if I can get a sensible, non-circular response to this question, I will be prepared to reconsider my gender critical stance.

TIA

Trans Men are Women.

No problem at all.

So if this person walked into the ladies loo you’d be fine with it? You can always tell a woman is a woman even if they look like a man?

To think that JK Rowling is a lioness of epic proportions?
EdgeOfACoin · 06/10/2022 11:07

"Fully functioning"? Oh dear.

I think the women of Iran burning their hijabs for freedom despite being killed for it are ‘lionesses of epic proportions’. But ‘feminists’ these days don’t seem to care about that. They care about what toilet a transwoman uses.

@Youg You could not be more wrong if you tried. You clearly haven't been paying attention. It's us GC women that have been having marches for women in Iran, tweeting about it, even writing letters and lobbying about it. If you had paid attention, you would know us GC feminists are at the forefront of advocating for women in Iran.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 06/10/2022 11:08

The "just like homophobia" argument is tosh, too.

For a gay man to live his life he isn't impacting on the safety, boundaries and dignity of another human being.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 06/10/2022 11:08

So please can you explain to me what constitutes a woman?

It's gonna be a feeling. That's the only answer ever given. No one ever describes this feeling though.

MooseBreath · 06/10/2022 11:09

I agree with most of what she says, especially when it comes to safeguarding women and children. I do find she can be a bit quick to dismiss genuine trans individuals though, who can't help the way they feel about themselves.

I have to assume that anyone who thinks trans men have fully functioning penises has either never Googled "phalloplasty" or never seen a penis.

Ooh look we’re back to the albert Einstein penis. Yay! So tell me again, a transman has a oenus that can get erect without any mechanical help, and an shoot semen? If it is formed from the muscle abd flesh of the arm, it cannot get erect without mechanical help, and if it is formed from the clitoris is it too small for penetrative sex. Which of these constitutes a fully functioning penis?

Confident we all agree with your first point however I think we can all be in awe of many women at the same time

babyjellyfish · 06/10/2022 11:10

And access to women's toilets shouldn't be based on an individual's self assessment of whether they "pass" or not.

If you are still kidding yourself that

Winecrispschocolatecats · 06/10/2022 11:14

babyjellyfish · 06/10/2022 10:59

OK well first of all, no one is assigned a gender, at birth or any other time. The whole thing is nonsense.

As for trans men, well the starting point for me is that they are women, so I have no issue with them in women's spaces. The only caveat to that is that if they have gone so far with their physical transition that they actually pass as men, I think they should use men's spaces. Their presence in women's spaces could be just as traumatising to women as the presence of an actual man, and they represent no threat to men.

So, yes to Elliot Page in the women's toilets, no to Buck Angel.

The obvious solution, of course, is to have single sex spaces for biological women, and unisex spaces for everyone else, i.e. men, trans men, male non binary people and trans women.

So men get their safe space and the rest of us don't? OK.....fine by me, but quite perplexing with the logic there.

bellinisurge · 06/10/2022 11:14

that this is the same as Section 28

Um, that is very, very, very rare that trans men have a fully functioning penis. VERY rare. We have rules based on worst case scenario. Not for the exception.

Can I ask you have you ever thought about why these spaces were created, in the first place? And what do you suppose has happened in the past 5 years that makes women no longer vulnerable and need those spaces?
