Not to like the Globe Theatre calling me a bitch?

OK, not to my face. But following the non-binary Joan of Arc play they’ve shared a ‘terfs stop being transphobic challenge’ referring to anyone who doesn’t believe in gender identity as a bitch.

It’s a shame. I’ve been to some amazing plays at the Globe. But they’ve made their position on feminists pretty clear, so I won’t be going back.

It’s funny how they ‘always knew they were a woman’ isn’t it? Even though no one can define woman , and even when they were acting in the manliest ways, they always knew Deep down they were a true and honest woman. 😞😞 Any bad acts they committed were due to suffering from their ‘struggle to repress their true self’ and so any sins should be forgiven.

im with you @risefromyourgrave

@Discovereads of course TERF is a slur! Stop pretending it isn't! You're calling a woman transphobic when you call them that, what else could Trans-Exclusionary be than a slur?

TERF doesn’t mean transphobic. Those are two completely different things.
And, there is no consensus it is a slur in any case, so I could equally say stop pretending that it is a slur.
What else could it be? Oh let me see now an acronym? That’s the person who invented it did. Some feminists calling themselves trans inclusive and the academic just decided to call the opposition to that trans exclusionary. Binary logic. Neutral descriptive terms.

Until people started the faux outrage and taking offence to TERF.

RUFISRUF · 08/10/2022 23:19

So if TERF is not a slur, although most people who called it insist it is, and an offensive one, would you agree that as man is not a slur, it is ok to call a TW a man @Discovereads ? If not, why not?

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 08/10/2022 23:22

I loathe the term faux outrage

terf is used as a slur even if it wasn’t intended as such and its ok for people to be upset about being called names

certain words and phrases are banned on here and my understanding is that terf is one of them….when someone is being called a terf at least

RUFISRUF · 08/10/2022 23:25

I mean the fact slogans such as ‘rape a TERF’ , ‘punch a TERF’ etc exist seems to imply it is in fact a slur. Unless of course we are redefining the word slur. I know the TRA are very keen on new definitions for words

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 08/10/2022 23:27

There's still a whole lot of "look over there" going on in this thread.

Same old hostility, same lack of progress. Come on ladies, we can do better than this.

Oh yeah. I forgot, when someone is called a TERF and told they deserve to die in a grease fire, it’s just a gentle little civil term used to denote entente cordiale. My bad.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/10/2022 23:31

@Discovereads you're usually pretty thoughtful and fairly reasonable, I don't think this is a hill to die on. The tras use and intend terf to be a slur, no matter who originated it or what their original intent was.

For example, I believe the term 'incel' was coined by a woman to describe her lack of a lover. I think we can agree that, like terf, it's definition has changed.

Let's not sweat the (relatively) small stuff.

Incidentally, the Welsh word 'terfyn' means 'boundary' (pl. terfynau).

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 08/10/2022 23:31

My bad

its easily done….these terms of endearment can be very confusing

And who exactly is doing this and what are they telling us to look at? What exactly are we supposed to be doing better? Not talking about the disgusting, disrespectful language used to describe women, or not talking about the fact women are expected to be nice and budge over to accommodate men’s feelings?

No, that’s the point, most people called it do not insist that it is. Nor do objective observers.

Man isn’t a slur, but it’s offensive because it’s misgendering. It’s not ok in the same way it is not ok to call you a man.

It implies no such thing. By your logic if someone said “rape a woman” “punch a woman” that would make woman a slur!?

No one is attempting to redefine a slur except you and others.

I’ve been called a TERF and yes I do find it offensive. Many many other women do also. I’m sure you have proof that all these women who are called TERF are actually ok with it? Or are you making that bit up?

call me a man. I don’t care. Man isn’t a slur. As discussed up thread, according to the definition of man given by PP, I am in fact a man. How can using the correct pronouns for someone’s sex be offensive?

Pixiedust1234 · 08/10/2022 23:38

Oh.... I do like that! Although I read it as "terfy now!" in my head and I sat up straighter 😅

So let me get this right. I cannot decide which words I find offensive and triggering but transpeople can? Why? Why do they get to decide what words and phrases are offensive?

IcakethereforeIam · 08/10/2022 23:46

I don't speak Welsh, I saw 'terfyn' on a road sign there, it also means 'limit'.

Redfrangipani · 09/10/2022 00:14

Passmethewhat · 08/10/2022 17:23

Because she states the immutable sex of a woman?
Yet has no problem changing her name?

@Passmethewhat

it occurs to me that you are a little out of your depth here.

DdraigGoch · 09/10/2022 00:22

Edmund Blackadder had an "effeminate hairdo" and used the nom-de-plume "Gertrude Perkins". Does that mean that he (she?) was actually the first female butler in fiction?
