AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

"I thought that we had gone beyond the lie that rich people are only rich because they work hard, and poor people are only poor because they are lazy and feckless."

It's a generalisation but not totally a lie IMO.

There's a big council estate near me. People flock to the 'corner shop' to buy from a poor selection of cigs, baccy, booze and junk food at inflated prices.

These people are able-bodied.

If they got on a bus to Aldi (5 stops door-to-door every half hour) they could shop much cheaper and have a better selection. If they have a bus pass it's free, if they don't it's £1.00 each way.

They'd save that 2.00 on their shopping bill.

So IMO they lack common sense or are idle.

£1 each way!
its £5.50 for one bus, I’d need two to my aldi.
that’s before I’ve struggled with bags, unreliable service and weather

I’m not rural

The cost of the bus puts them off I suppose
I don't go into town that much as it's the cost of bus / parking etc

I don't believe the £1 each way bus cost. Nowhere these days is that cheap.
When i used to get a bus to do my weekly shop I would get lots of stuff from the supermarket once a week - as much as I could carry, and then top up at the local shop.

The government will spend almost a billion advertising its new policies. Whether they'll have u-turned on those policies by the time they're advertised remains unclear.

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 11:21

I suspect it is a long time since @BoxcarMilly went on a bus so her idea of bus fares is way out of date.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 11:56

Ian Duncan Smith has come out againt cutting benefits as it would damage growth. Shame he didn't think the same way back in 2010 but better late than never I suppose.

countrygirl99 · 04/10/2022 12:00

Well they won't be travelling on any buses if they live in Chatteris. If you don't have a car it will be taxi to the supermarket.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 12:20

@Dreikanter
Definition of "Feckless" = "worthlessness due to being feeble and ineffectual."

I said they IMO, were "idle or lacked common sense".

Which is the dictionary definition of “feckless”.

No it isn't, so don't be silly.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 12:25

@antelopevalley "I don't believe the £1 each way bus cost"

Then don't believe it. 🙄

That's from the Council Estate to Aldi (5 stops) obviously if you go further you pay more. It's a subsidised bus service.

If I want to go to Aldi it's £1.50 because it's a longer journey. Still a bargain, though.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 12:30

@antelopevalley "I suspect it is a long time since @BoxcarMilly went on a bus so her idea of bus fares is way out of date."

Nope, I went on one yesterday.

At least I think it was a bus, because it had 50 seats, a nice chap driving and it went 'ting, ting' 🤔

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 12:32

I am genuinely surprised. Where do you live that bus fares are so cheap?
A google shows that York has a special deal of £1 after 7 pm for a limited time.

AdoraBell · 04/10/2022 12:35

£1 bus fare? Where, roughly, are you? I’m in SW and the bus to the nearest town is £7.80 return.

DD2 is in Liverpool for Uni and her cost of living is about 50% of her twin in Wales. When they come home and go to shops she’s shocked at the prices here.

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 12:39

So in York for a limited time, you could travel return to the supermarket for £2 return after 7 pm.
Great for a night out which it is probably aimed at stimulating. Not so great for a single mother with young children who it is suggested she should drag her kids to the supermarket late at night rather than putting them to bed.

BirmaBrite · 04/10/2022 12:47

Council estates are usually in the majority privately owned now, so a lot of the inhabitants would have been at work ?

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 12:48

@antelopevalley "Where do you live that bus fares are so cheap?"

Obviously I'm not saying as it could be 'outing'.🙂

As I said it's a private company that's subsidised and a lot cheaper than the Council buses.

It goes where the Council buses don't go, such as around housing estates and to villages that aren't served by the 'normal' bus service. It's very popular, especially with 'Seniors'.(Who of course don't have to pay)

I use it regularly to support it. Also it's door-to-door for me to Aldi.

Generally people use corner shops for top-ups. A cheap bottle of wine in the evening after getting back from work. Some bread in the morning because you have run out last night when the teenager made loads of toast.
If it is a big estate then it will support a corner shop with top ups.

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 12:51

And honestly, the people I think who are worst at budgeting are some middle-class families. I am sometimes aghast at threads on here of people earning high wages with reasonable mortgages who claim they cant afford perfectly ordinary things.

Just the sort of thing to be cut during the spending cuts that are coming, unless it is subsidised by a nice rich philanthropist ?

May corner shops also have a tab for regular customers

Our corner shop does, very much part of the community for some without this they wouldn’t be able to always feed their families

when money really is tight it’s a constant taking from peter to pay paul it’s an exhausting and
depressing way to live

It must run past a route that has been assessed as needing support to exist. These are buses to big employers of low-paid people e.g. industrial estates, or buses on main routes to hospitals. They usually have very limited services e.g. to industrial estate at beginning and end of day only.

You are half correct.

It runs 8.00.am to 6.30.pm and it doesn't run on a Sunday.
It serves a rural railway station, an industrial estate and a big general hospital.
