AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

@BoxcarMilly your bus service is lovely. Do you actually understand that such services are not the norm for the vast, vast majority of people (feckless or otherwise)? You can't generalise from your personal experience.

I was going to go part-time as fed up of working like a dog, then the tax cut got announced and I thought, “maybe I’ll stick with full-time a bit longer, now that it will be more worthwhile”. Now there’s been u-turn on the tax cut and I am back to planning on going part-time.

That’s what happens when you tax high-earners so much - they stop working so hard, or they move to a different country.

I'm sure you'll be missed..

A lot of them seem to be in parliament . . .

Also, it's one thing to nip to the corner shop for a few items, and another to pay the fare for all the kids these idle people always seem to have. 5 lots of £2 return quickly add up.

Kids are half price and there is no charge for babies in buggies.

I have no problem with U turns. It Shows they've listened. Had labour done a u turn like this they'd have been praised for it.

They've listened! You've got to laugh!!!

There should have been no need to listen - if they were on top of their brief they would have known that their ideas were a total balls-up without having to be told. It is terrifying that they have so little idea what they are doing.

And in any event they should have listened before the act - goodness knows enough people were telling them then.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 13:38

Braverman has gone for broke at the tory conference and declared that she's "proud" of the british empire.

Well you have to admire her chutzpah ! 😆

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 13:48

Braverman also says she was against the tax cut u-turn and accuses Gove of instigating a 'coup', a term that's pretty much lost all meaning in the context of a conservative government.

WhatdoImean · 04/10/2022 14:26

God I HATE all this "Feckless poor" crap.

The majority of "Social Security" spending is for people who are old (pensions), disabled and cannot work, or work but in low paid jobs (UC). Yes, there ARE some people who "live life on the dole" - but these have been shown to be few and far between. More typical is a single parent (typically female), who has kids to look after and may get a few hours in working as a cashier while they are at school. In other words - doing all they can to get by for themselves and their family.

Sorry - rant off - but it REALLY gets my goat!

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 14:58

Feckless is losing 65 bill ( or whatever it was) by not doing your job properly in the first place. Those two would be out of a job in the real world.
Spending a few pounds on a packet of cigarettes is small fry in comparison.

Blossomtoes · 04/10/2022 15:03

and who do you vote for ?

You really have to ask @HRTQueen? Labour. Every single time in local and general elections since I was first able to vote 51 years ago. Except in 2019 when I spoilt my paper.

i must have you confused with another poster who said they didn’t vote

and well snap I have done and did the same

what I don’t play into is tribal politics be that supporting the Labour Party or being a Remainer as this breed of politics (prevalent on sm) has caused so much harm

ive been called a Tory, Tory lite, a scum leaver and even a Corbynista

I don’t just read left wing media it helps to listen/read up on all sides of politics

and as for MN well since being on here 2005 never once have the majority been right come election time

I find MN Labour politics tends to be very MC Labour politics which I think is often out of touch with working class Labour politics

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 15:41

I agree that many working class people are now conservatives because the Labour Party were unelectable and Jeremy Corbyn was never going to win an outright election.
He came close in 2017 , but hung Parliaments are always a disaster. Add in brexit and it was a non starter really.
My own dh is conservative and many of my friends and relations , so I am never dismissive of them or call them names because of their beliefs. They are just different beliefs to mine
I did notice during the chancellors speech yesterday that he was dismissive of nationalized industries and the Labour Party , so they are not immune to goading the opposition either. It's how politics work.
We all have to accept that not everyone is the same politically and have different views.
Angela Raynor calling people names wasn't her finest hour , but she did apologize and she'll hopefully learn from it.
The Labour Party are not perfect, but I'd like to think they would be more for the people and not just the rich in society and those who have enormous privilege. A centralist Labour Party might work again. They need to work with business to achieve this energy company they want. It won't be a walk in the park I'm sure
( if they ever get into power that is!)

People complained bitterly about a policy, the policy is changed after the government listened, People complain bitterly still 🙈

Oh you think we should be grateful?

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 17:21

New yougov poll:

Do you think the Conservative party is moderate or extreme?

Extreme: 39% (+12 from 31 Jul)
Moderate: 21% (-10)
Neither: 21% (-1)

But it hasn't been reversed really, has it? We're still having to borrow money to fund over £40 billion in tax cuts, and they are still desperate to cut benefits. This is really a horrible, selfish, inhumane government.

Clavinova · 03/10/2022 10:11

Novum
A suggestion three years ago that didn't make it into the manifesto?

It was quite clearly a pledge not a suggestion:

General election 2019: Labour's £58bn pledge to right WASPI 'injustice'

Mr McDonnell said Labour had been working on a settlement for 18 months, although it did not feature in the party's manifesto or the accompanying costings.

news.sky.com/story/general-election-2019-labours-58bn-pledge-to-right-waspi-injustice-11869005

Even your heart's not really in this, is it, @Clavinova? Time was you could do much better than that.

It's not really an assessment you can make, because if one thing is certain it is that Labour would never have come up with such a bloody stupid, disastrous policy in the first place.

LadyWithLapdog · 04/10/2022 18:08

Measure twice, cut once.

I don’t want U-turns and flip-flops according to what the papers say. These are people who have put themselves forward for these jobs, who have a whole apparatus behind them to help them make these decisions. Yet they’ve proven to be irresponsible, incompetent, deluded twats.

They’d have been fired from any job in which they’ve brought so much financial and reputation damage.

They really are split right down the middle, aren't they, and none of these ministers seem to have heard of the principle of Cabinet responsibility. What a truly horrible person Braverman is.

Is it too much to hope that Truss will boot her out? Her support was clearly extremely short-lived.

LexMitior · 04/10/2022 18:09

Truss is absolutely toast - her colleagues are now openly saying to the media that she needs to uprate benefits with inflation.

Her fiscal policy is an Omni shambles- and it's spreading. She has got no control over her MPs.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 18:22

Well said, @WhatdoImean

Rge real benefits scroungers (as has been said before, but it still doesn't seem to penetrate) are employers who pay bones-of-your-*rse wages that people are forced to top up with universal credit.

I'm not talking about a small business with one or two employees, just getting by - many, if not most, of these are large corporations getting massive profits and paying huge dividends to shareholders whilst effectively running their own slave economies.

THAT'S who is grifting off the benefits system.

BirmaBrite · 04/10/2022 19:09
