AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

@DaydreamBelieve yes, that was to stop stuff collapsing the other day.

lannistunut · 03/10/2022 07:44

If I had to choose between a PM who didn't make bad economic decisions that do real damage to the economy, and one who did make bad economic decisions that do real damage to the economy and then u-turned for political reasons, I would choose the former.

ShandaLear · 03/10/2022 07:45

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/10/2022 07:40

TBH I’d rather have A leader who did U-turns on bad decisions rather than carry on through with them to save face. I mean did people want the u-turn or not? If the answer is yes then what are you moaning for.

We didn’t want them to balls it up this bad in the first place. Come on, this is basic A level economics, not rocket science.

TheHoover · 03/10/2022 07:45

oh @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet where to start!

People complained bitterly about a policy, the policy is changed after the government listened, People complain bitterly still 🙈

You don't understand the damage that has been done.

Politics is real, the economy is real - a lot of economic damage has been done that can't be undone.

Given the fall out was totally foreseeable it's fine to continue moaning that they didn't have the intelligence to realise or step back earlier.

I agree with this in principle, I am quite happy for u turns. But, they massively fucked up with this and they let the damage be done so now it seems kind of pointless.

They're only U turning on it because Gove made them look stupid. They don't actually care about the economic impact.

RedAppleGirl · 03/10/2022 07:46

What a bizarre U-turn.
Why announce the policy and then change it 10 days later?
People are calling for a GE, shall we have a GE every time we don't like something a government does?
The population and the Twitterati are becoming ungovernable.

SleeplessInEngland · 03/10/2022 07:47

Jesus, the apologist cretins are still out in force today I see.

LizTrussIsACylon · 03/10/2022 07:47

The lady is not for not turning.

Bank of England has spent £65 billion this week on shoring up pensions. Money that will have to be paid back by us.

So yeah, they've scrapped the 45p tax rate. Whoop di doo. They still plan on having a bonfire of regulations including making any company with less that 500 employees a "small to medium enterprise" so they don't have to meet a lot of business regulations. They plan on having fracking companies be the ones who carry out polls into whether or not local areas want fracking. I'm sure that won't go wrong.

Oh and they have said we need more austerity. More cuts to public services. You know, things like the NHS, education, Council services. All those things that are currently managing soooooooo well with their budgets.

The 45p thing is small change in comparison. It makes them look like they are listening. They are not.

No, not ungovernable but ungoverned.

Yes, exactly, as I said - I would choose the PM who didn't make bad decisions.

It is pathetic to think you can fuck up the economy and then go 'oh, silly me!'

Well, yes, it's good to admit it when you've fucked up, but personally I'd rather that they had listened to expert advice so that they didn't piss £65billion up the wall in the first place.

Why was it even a policy in the first place, when literally everyone knew it was a terrible idea? How can their critical decision making skills have been so poor? And what else are they going to balls up? Does anyone have any trust or confidence in them, because I sure as hell don’t?

I think it's the lack of stability.

It is good that they reversed the decision.

It is still very disturbing that we have such incompetent people in power.

There is still a feeling of 'you bloody idiots' even though they have reversed the decision.

I want a leader who does not make such massive, avoidable and expensive mistakes a few days into office. If I made a mistake at work which cost my company billions and made all our clientele worse off, I'd get the boot.

User98866 · 03/10/2022 07:51

The damage is done. They’ve only reversed because half their own party have said they wouldn’t support it. They need to go. How can the public trust them with the economy in these times if their own party don’t?

Are you a bit hard of understanding? Do you know how much this massive error of judgement has cost us as taxpayers? Do you not think people are entitled to complain about government incompetence?

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 03/10/2022 07:51

So they all made a shit ton of money for themselves and cronies and now u turn after everything is fucked and cost the country billions of pounds. What a shower of shit they really are. I am terrified at what is to come.

Exactly... they recognise it's a mistake and go 'Whoops!' but they are still in power with no indication that a similar cock up won't happen again.

Not very reassuring.

I'd rather have a leader that is willing to stand by tough decisions that goes against the popular vote for the benefit of the country.

Obviously they would need not just to be principled but capable which no one in the current government is.

So on that I guess a U turn is better.

caffelattetogo · 03/10/2022 07:52

So that one stupid announcement has cost UK taxpayers £65 billion by screwing the financial markets. That's money we could have spent on public services.
Plus there's no way mortgages are going to recover so the damage is done to homeowners too.
This is the worst government we have ever had, and following the Johnson cock ups, track and trace, PPE contracts and the rest, that takes some doing.
The UK is financially screwed.

Nat6999 · 03/10/2022 07:52

KK mates still made millions betting on the pound dropping after he made his announcement at the fiscal statement. Nothing can change that.
