AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

@RedAppleGirl
"Rich" people are usually the ones who run businesses who employ people. These policies should enable wealthy owners to create more jobs for middle and lower class citizens, meaning the benefits are felt by everyone

You are doing a better job than any poster on here to help destroy the Tory party.

Well done.

I'm sure my sphere of influence isn't that great.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 09:27

@pointythings You asked for an answer and you got one. If you want to flounce off because you didn't like it that's not my problem.

And I notice you haven't defined 'rich' or 'poor'?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 04/10/2022 09:27

I’m actually impressed with the backbenchers for refusing to be whipped. I’m sure it’s down to self preservation but it really shows how whacky Truss et al are that even the Tory’s can’t stomach them.

The problem Truss has now is that levelling up was such an explicit part of the Tory 2019 GE platform. It's ok to have a change in leader if it can still be argued they're delivering the manifesto policies, but when that's transparently not happening, the MPs have a credibility and legitimacy problem. I'm not sure exactly how many Red Wall MPs there are, but it's in the dozens anyway, and they in particular will understand that their constituents won't tolerate this.

pointythings · 04/10/2022 09:34

@BoxcarMilly but your answer is bullshit. Which is to be expected of a Tory devotee.

The definitions are simple: Rich = earning enough to be paying 45% tax on anything above £150k. You can whine about that, but it's 5 times the national median wage. Rich.

Poor: living on benefits or NMW. Having to choose between heating and eating. Paying more than 50% of household income on rent and utilities. There are a lot of categories of poor. It's shameful that people like you think this is OK.

RedAppleGirl · 04/10/2022 09:21

Oh it is, you are being such a typical rich Tory, with your lower middle class comments.

Any how, why would the wealthy invest when us plebs don't have money? better returns elsewhere.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 09:44

"I thought that we had gone beyond the lie that rich people are only rich because they work hard, and poor people are only poor because they are lazy and feckless."

It's a generalisation but not totally a lie IMO.

There's a big council estate near me. People flock to the 'corner shop' to buy from a poor selection of cigs, baccy, booze and junk food at inflated prices.

These people are able-bodied.

If they got on a bus to Aldi (5 stops door-to-door every half hour) they could shop much cheaper and have a better selection. If they have a bus pass it's free, if they don't it's £1.00 each way.

They'd save that 2.00 on their shopping bill.

So IMO they lack common sense or are idle.

Zebedee55 · 04/10/2022 09:54

Cabinet Minister, Penny Mordaunt, has criticised the plan to freeze or not pay the inflation rate, for means tested benefits. Other Tory MPs are joining the revolt, so it won't be long before the next U-turn. No point if Truss cannot get it through a Commons vote.🙄

walkingonsunshinekat · 04/10/2022 09:56

@BoxcarMilly Just another anecdote and you don't know if they are able bodied or have good MH.

Unless you re sitting outside running a survey, you ve no idea if they do the majority of their shopping at Aldi.

Also, if no one uses that shop, it closes, another community hub gone.

I agree, Mordaunt won't have come out and said this unless she knows she has some backing

pointythings · 04/10/2022 10:02

@BoxcarMilly ah, anecdata. The favoured weapon of those who have nothing of substance to say. Can you please link me to the website where we can confirm this mythical area where bus fares are £1 and run every half hour? Because I live in a small market town and we have nothing like that. Buses are prohibitively expensive. Our local supermarket is a Sainsburys, which is beyond the reach of many and the nearest Aldi is a £5 infrequent bus ride away. If you're living on government largesse, that is prohibitive (and you know it, you just don't care).

Also ablebodied does not mean able to function - ever heard of mental ill health?

Croque · 04/10/2022 10:07

Right, apparently all council estate residents survive on expensive booze and fags and none shop at Aldi. How very nuanced. 🙄

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 10:11

@walkingonsunshinekat Just another anecdote and you don't know if they are able bodied or have good MH.
I've been to the Post Office there and while queueing observed shoppers going to the shop next door.. Most are able-bodied and are able to carry shopping without problems. (Of course I can't comment on their MH)

Unless you re sitting outside running a survey, you ve no idea if they do the majority of their shopping at Aldi.
I've never seen anyone from that area get on the bus to Aldi, and I've travelled at all times of the day by bus. Neither have I recognised anyone from that area shopping at Aldi and returning by bus.

Also, if no one uses that shop, it closes, another community hub gone.
So 'poor' people are subsidising a business that charges over-the-odds?

Often the bus fare to the supermarket costs more than the overpricing at the corner shop. When I worked in Sainsburys it was the m9re affluent who bought their lottery tickets(5-10 at a time), scratch cards (10-20 a time) and tobacco or vapes several boxes at a time.

I have anecdotes too.

This image of feckless poor you are trying to create is a lie, by peddling it you make yourself look stupid.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 10:16

Peston confirms Kwateng associates benefitted from insider trading:

After all that, it turns out hedge funder Crispin Odey - who employed Kwarteng - was long sterling and gilts at end of last week, so made a packet out of sterling and gilt recovery. I asked him why and he said “patriotic!”.

He tells me he reversed his short position after “Kwasi came along”, which is the opposite of what the market believed. He sees the “pivot” in the dollar’s bull run as the mini budget. Let’s see.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 10:16

@pointythings "Can you please link me to the website where we can confirm this mythical area where bus fares are £1 and run every half hour? Because I live in a small market town and we have nothing like that"

I used to live in a small market town and we had 3 buses a day (return) and it was £6.50 to the city (one way) to go to Aldi.

So what's your point?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/10/2022 10:16

BoxcarMilly - you can't possibly be a Tory if you travel by bus. Don't be ridiculous.

So not only do you run surveys outside your local corner shop but also at Aldi and on the local bus service too?

Remarkable.

You're all arguing with a troll. Probably not worth it.

I never said they were 'feckless' that was your description.

I said they IMO, were "idle or lacked common sense".

Which is the dictionary definition of “feckless”.

As you well know.
