AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

@Skidaramink go part-time. Enjoy your kids. God forbid, one day you or them may be in need of “benefits” (life saving emergency op , care home etc). Your taxed money benefits you and yours as well.

It doesn’t really though, does it? Seeing as most high earners pay for private health insurance and education.

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to pay my fair share of tax. The point I am making is that the share of tax I am paying is not fair.

I say all this as a working class person who was brought up in a single-parent family that was so poor that there literally wasn’t enough to eat. So perhaps you can see why, if I pulled myself out of that kind of background, and work incredibly hard and make huge sacrifices (including hardly seeing my children), I resent being taxed to death for doing so.

Eeiliethya · 03/10/2022 23:37

It doesn't even feel like a democracy anymore, how can we have this odious woman thrust on us with these policies that nobody has even voted for?

How is it right??

WatchoRulo · 03/10/2022 23:56

I resent being taxed to death for doing so.
You aren't being taxed to death.

StoneofDestiny · 04/10/2022 01:05

The Conservative Party chairman has been criticised after saying people struggling with bills should get a "new job"
Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry made the comments as he defended the government's mini-budget at the party's conference
Mr Berry, who also serves as Tory chairman, said households should "cut their consumption" or "get a higher salary" to cope with rising bills

Crack on folks!

onlythreenow · 04/10/2022 03:35

Generally speaking the people who are earning enough to be in the top tax bracket make big sacrifices to earn that money. People seem to think they’re just “lucky”. Well most of the time it’s not luck, it’s hard work, long hours, late nights, all-nighters, stress, weekends worked, holidays ruined. I know because I live that life.

You don't sound "lucky" to me - in fact that sort of life sounds like hell to me (and nothing to do with taxes). I would far rather live a basic happy life than work like that for even a month!

Also, a lot of people who are very far from being in the top tax bracket work very hard, with long hours, late nights, weekends worked etc. - they often need to work more than one job just to get by. They are stressed because they can't make ends meet, and can't afford holidays. In my experience those who work the hardest are often those who are paid the least.

countrygirl99 · 04/10/2022 05:08

@Skidaramink what you are doing isn't healthy fir you or your children so it's doing you a favour really

User98866 · 04/10/2022 06:13

Private healthcare only gets you so far. Life or death situation and it’s the nhs every time. And even if it isn’t you’re most likely using the NHS infrastructure. I know a few top earners and they were absolutely horrified by the proposal. They don’t need the extra money and they want to live in a functional society where children aren’t eating rubbers because they are so hungry. Yes they work very hard but I don’t believe the amount you’re paid is an indicator of how hard you work. Lots and lots of people work just as hard for very little reward.

notimagain · 04/10/2022 07:07

@Clavinova

*French air traffic controllers are set to strike again...
In a statement explaining last week’s industrial action, the union said inflation was eroding worker pay and called for wage increases and more recruitment.

www.euronews.com/travel/2022/09/20/france-travel-the-exact-dates-to-avoid-flights-as-strike-dates-announced*

For completeness -that strike (end of Sept) never happened, it was another long rumbling along dispute, mainly about controller workload/recruiting, and an agreement with the employer has been reached.

cakeorwine · 04/10/2022 07:46

This week will be interesting.

I can see they are going to publish the OBR report early now, despite Kwarteng saying they couldn't get it done until November 23rd.

Will they u-turn on benefits as well ?

Damnautocorrect · 04/10/2022 07:56

Did anyone see the channel 5 program 1978 winter of discontent.
nothing like a bit of history repeating itself.

walkingonsunshinekat · 04/10/2022 08:03

I promise you that if the tax cut had gone ahead the tax take from high income earners would have increased, just like it did when it was cut from 50% to 45%

On that logic, why not 20% ?

The fact remains is that the number of millionaires in the has gone from 740k in 2015 to 2.4m in 2021 - so people aren't being taxed to death or leaving the UK, indeed the opposite is true,
the only people being put off from working is the low paid & other health workers who are leaving in droves.

You ve chosen to have a shite family experience with your partner and kids for money, thats on you, not the tax system.

One thing i do find odd is why your company work you "to death" yet will happily allow you to go p/t with the rest of your job being down in & from the USA, if your that valuable, get a pay rise to compensate, will be cheaper for them.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 08:04

Truss being questioned on LBC now. “Austerity” comes up and she replies “I don’t agree with that description”, confirming A) it is that and B) she knows people will be far less accepting of it than they initially were with Cameron.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 08:06

Will they u-turn on benefits as well ?

Yes. Mourdaunt has also come out and said they should be in line with inflation, so that’s now too many MPs openly challenging her. It’s untenable.

People will not accept it for two key reasons:

  1. there is bugger all left to cut, a very high % of the population can not afford any further personal reductions and institutions are clearly falling apart
  2. they promised there would be improvements after Brexit - they had better fucking deliver them
User98866 · 04/10/2022 08:13

I’m actually impressed with the backbenchers for refusing to be whipped. I’m sure it’s down to self preservation but it really shows how whacky Truss et al are that even the Tory’s can’t stomach them.

BoxcarMilly · 03/10/2022 08:16

@Shepandawing "People complained bitterly about a policy, the policy is changed after the government listened, People complain bitterly still 🙈"

Exactly.
They can't do right for doing wrong.

😴

A shoves a knife into B's side. B doesn't like it. So A does a 'U-turn' and pulls it back out. Strangely, B is still complaining. Poor old A, can't do right for doing wrong eh?
In chemistry I learnt that some changes are reversible, and some aren't. After you've fried an egg, you can stop frying it and even put it in the fridge to cool it down, but you can't reverse all the changes you've made. I think it's a bit like that. A 'U-turn' doesn't reverse all the effects of your original action. So in this case some of the money that was lost stays lost despite the U-turn. That's why everyone is complaining.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/10/2022 08:45

I thought that we had gone beyond the lie that rich people are only rich because they work hard, and poor people are only poor because they are lazy and feckless.

People like @Skidaramink give me the rage when they peddle this crap. Good for you for worshipping the altar of money, it's a shame you had to sacrifice the time with your dc to achieve your riches. With such a good salary you can afford to drop your hours, to earn less, pay less tax and spend more time with your family. That would also leave hours for another person to then earn an equivalent wage, paying taxes.

Many people work long hours for minimum wage, full time staff are taking on second jobs and working overtime in order to pay the bills and still only scraping by.
Those that can't due to different reasons, eg, carers, illness, injury, are starving. If it wasn't for the generosity of those in the community donating food to food banks people would be dead already. We are a rich country, that we need food banks is sickening but you crack on with your objection to contributing slightly more- that you can afford on that wage- to the countries pot.

This government has shown they don't care about the people they are supposed to represent, and the very late u turn has shown they can't be trusted when someone shows you who they are, believe them.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 08:45

I’m actually impressed with the backbenchers for refusing to be whipped

They can do whatever they like with the current tory polling.

And this is why tory apologists who say 'polls don't matter' are wrong.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/10/2022 08:49

This has been a long time coming. I'd have more respect for the back benchers refusal to be whipped if it had come a year ago. They might have had a chance to save the party then. A second chance came with the change of leader.

They missed the opportunities to put the breaks on the debacle they have created then so I'm not at all impressed. Too little, too late.

SleeplessInEngland · 04/10/2022 08:49

Just seen the Mail's front page headline today: "GET A GRIP".

So she's lost that paper, then. At this point the party must be thinking they need to get rid of her asap to give as much time between now and another election for a new leader to make an impression. Another regicide.

BoxcarMilly · 04/10/2022 08:51

@pointythings 'can you please explain, since you are clearly a diehard Tory, why it is always the case that rich people need tax bribes incentives while poor people need to have their income cut and be kicked deeper into the mud? Asking for a friend.'

If you asked a sensible question instead of posting a load of emotive nonsense, you might get a sensible answer.

And maybe you should define 'rich' and 'poor' while you are at it.

However, since you asked;
"Rich" people are usually the ones who run businesses who employ people. These policies should enable wealthy owners to create more jobs for middle and lower class citizens, meaning the benefits are felt by everyone.

I interpreted the headline is a warning to stay on course rather than a full withdrawal of support.
Still not exactly ideal for her.

pointythings · 04/10/2022 08:58

@BoxcarMilly so you also believe in the discredited doctrine of trickle down economics. Thanks for clarifying that, I can ignore you now.

Maybe should read up on it

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/10/2022 08:59

Fuck off with lower class. A hca is not a lower class citizen than than a trader, if anything its the other way around. A trader has little use to the community other than using their wealth to help, if they refuse to do this and object to giving a little extra (taxes), they are lower class.

Your worth is mot defined by your wealth.

Dreikanter · 04/10/2022 09:06

Research by the LSE found that tax cuts for the rich pushes up income inequality and does nothing to increase GDP per capita or employment rates.
