To think the way she dressed was a little inappropriate

I want to start by saying I am a bit of a closet fan of the Beckhams and I also want to point out I have a 13 year old daughter. I have just seen pics of the Beckhams at some fashion show and as always, they all look fab. However, I am a wee bit disappointed in what Harper is wearing. It’s a beautiful dress and she looks gorgeous in it but for me, it just looks a little too old for someone of her age (11? 12?). Am I being a bit of a pearl clutcher here or would people tend to agree?

I don't like it because it's black, young girls can get away with bright colours and glitter and diamonds or sequins rather than boring black. Love the trainers and her hair though

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2022 11:36

"For a fashion designer she doesn't half make some hideous dresses"

She's as talented a fashion designer as her son is a photographer. But you can call yourself anything you want when you've got the money to play at stuff.

FlorettaB · 01/10/2022 11:37

I know it’s designed to emphasise the body of an adult woman but the way it was styled it was very child dressing-up - you could imagine her trying to shuffle along in shoes 6 sizes too big - rather than looking creepy.

I’m not saying it’s something I’d pick for an 11 year old to wear but I don’t think it’s awful.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 01/10/2022 11:38

I don't think I've seen a photo of her since she was about 3 😂. I wouldn't have recognised her.

she looks fine, like an 11 year old, plaits/trainers, it's got a strap across the lace so she's not even 'exposing' her ironing board chest. I wouldn't blink an eye if she was playing on the beach in just swim bottoms.

It would be different if she actually had any bust.

LemonadeSunshine · 01/10/2022 11:39

It's so depressing that STILL some women's automatic response is to comment on another woman's / girl's clothes in a derogatory way, bring her down and insinuate that any negative attention is her fault.
A girl wears a dress which fits well. She has pretty make-up. She has cute shoes. She has lovely hair. She's with her family.
But the focus is her dress being 'appropriate'.

Ladies, we need to lift each other up to move away from this self-sabotage, there are plenty of other groups in society who are trying to do that.

Darbs76 · 01/10/2022 11:42

It’s really not appropriate for a child of 11. It’s an adult dress

Fine with family. A family wedding or event in the back garden. Who sees those photos?

Harper is all over social media, the scrutiny as she goes into her teen tear will be intense. She even has her own hashtag. She needs to be protected. Her parents, of all people, should know that.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 01/10/2022 11:44

*teen years

AutumnCrow · 01/10/2022 11:50

@LemonadeSunshine it's her parents who are in charge of the Beckham Show, not us. They pay a lot of money to a PR team to get Harper in the public eye. Be angry with THEM. They are very slick at these kinds of manouvres within a very sexist and misogynistic industry/culture.

And as for 'Ladies, we need to ...'. No thanks. I'll stick with actual feminism as found on FWR, ta.

HikingforScenery · 01/10/2022 11:51

I don’t see anything wrong with the dress tbh. Especially as she’s prepubescent, it shows nothing. I’d rather see it on her now, then on a 15/16/17 year old or adult with breasts. Then it would look inappropriate.

GloriousGlory · 01/10/2022 11:52

I agree, I dislike children being dressed as adults.

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/10/2022 11:53

So she needs to dress in a " protective way" ?. Yes she needs protection from the public eye. She shouldn't be photographed, she should not have social media pages etc but the dress isn't the problem. To insinuate that she needs to be dressed to protect herself is plain and simple victim blaming.

the media are photographing her.
We are all commenting on her body here/dress sense here.

If we can't not do this then we should protect her from us and not watch TV or look at photos in the news. Its not her who should change anything about herself.

gluenotsoup · 01/10/2022 11:54

No, it’s a child in an adults dress. The cut is designed to be revealing and sexual, in my opinion. Putting an 11 year old in it, even if it’s been altered to fit, is age inappropriate and doesn’t look nice either. For context, I have 3dds of similar ages, and wouldn’t allow it.

Maireas · 01/10/2022 11:55

It's not victim blaming to look at a promoted 11 year old in the public eye and criticise her parents for letting her wear an adult woman's dress intended to sexualise the wearer.

Mumrey · 01/10/2022 11:56

IMO not appropriate for a child (she is a child), Brand Beckham have got what they wanted, we are all talking about it!

WillPowerLite · 01/10/2022 11:58

I just don't think you can apply normal standards to Harper. She is not normal. Her family is not normal. They are mega-rich and their business is fame and money.

She is not a child of actors who is carefully protected from the cameras and the crazy. That's not her family.

It's not an appropriate dress for a normal 11 year old in normal circumstances. It is probably par for the course in her Instagram world.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 01/10/2022 12:00

Meh. I wouldn't say it was "inappropriate". It looks a bit silly for a very pleasant and normal-looking child to be wearing an adult's evening gown, but that is not the crime of the century. I do think, though, that her parents ought not to parade her around because girls/women spend so much time being judged anyway on what they look like/what they're wearing that it seems wrong-headed to set their daughter up for it in spades.

What I wonder is why she is always referred to by her middle name as well as her first name. If I always referred to my DC by their middle names as well as their first names, I'd very quickly have jaw-ache.

MissEwe2 · 01/10/2022 12:07

YABVU

The dress looks fine to me but either way trying to slut shame an 11 year old girl is really unnecessary.

I hope Harper doesn’t read this thread but most girls her age would be mortified to hear that they dressed “inappropriately”.

The model in green is Bella Hadid. She’s always exceptionally thin but probably more so ATM because if this

www.harpersbazaar.com/fashion/fashion-week/a41468833/bella-hadid-coperni-paris-fashion-week-naked-dress/

The total objectification of women then sticking your 11 year old in the middle of it. But who am I to judge, they might my 11 year old is sheltered from the real world.

Lulu1919 · 01/10/2022 12:07

Not a child's dress

Itsacafe · 01/10/2022 12:09

VB always looks pained and insecure in photos. Can't stand DB's whiney voice and tattoos. Everyone round here knows a few things he's been up to in the not too distant past. Feel sorry for the "photographer," "footballer" and "singer" boys. The daughter has no chance really.

Maireas · 01/10/2022 12:11

That Bella Hadid thing just gave me the creeps. Standing passively on a stage in a thong while men spray "a dress" on you.
What a dreadful business that is.

TabithaTittlemouse · 01/10/2022 12:13

I think for the time and place it was appropriate. It’s not like she’s popping to kfc.

FlorettaB · 01/10/2022 12:13

The Bella Hadid thing was Creepy + Fashion Student.

No, it was worse. The image was used for publicity.
