To think the way she dressed was a little inappropriate

I want to start by saying I am a bit of a closet fan of the Beckhams and I also want to point out I have a 13 year old daughter. I have just seen pics of the Beckhams at some fashion show and as always, they all look fab. However, I am a wee bit disappointed in what Harper is wearing. It’s a beautiful dress and she looks gorgeous in it but for me, it just looks a little too old for someone of her age (11? 12?). Am I being a bit of a pearl clutcher here or would people tend to agree?

Making comments on the looks of an 11 year old girl. What a waste of oxygen you are.

Not in the spirit

Yet still gets invited to fashion shows and be in fashion magazines and still only 11.

I think VB is letting her DD wear what she likes. An 11yo had got excited about going to a fashion show and has picked when she thought was glamorous. Good for VB for not being controlling.

She is literally wearing something customised from VBs clothing label - that's about as controlling as it gets.

keeprunning55 · 01/10/2022 16:08

I think she looks lovely! I have an 11 dd and she would not wear a dress like that, but as Harper is confident she carries it off well.

Fine with family. A family wedding or event in the back garden. Who sees those photos?

Harper is all over social media, the scrutiny as she goes into her teen tear will be intense. She even has her own hashtag. She needs to be protected. Her parents, of all people, should know that.

I totally agree with this. There is nothing wrong with Harper. It’s the dress and the publicity generated from a tween wearing a dress designed to show off the wearer’s body. What are her parents thinking?!

My dd is 14 and has started to like the pretty little thing more adult looking clothes. PLT would perhaps sell a less elaborate version of this dress. I wouldn’t buy it for dd even just for parties with friends. She needs to be at least 16 to wear anything like that, preferably older.

Image for those who are hard of Google

Yeah I think that's far too sexy for an 11yo.

And what always bothers me is that styles like this are made for women with shape. Not little girls. They don't stay in place properly and expose even more that they're intended to.

zingally · 01/10/2022 16:45

I agree. It's not an appropriate dress for an 11 year old.

errnerrcallnernnernnern · 01/10/2022 16:59

Voted YABU. Looked at dress. Changed VOTE to YANBU.

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 17:00

Florettab - this conversation is slightly broader than how one child dresses

I mean it’s obvious why she gets invites to her own mother’s fashion show 😆 but it’s not like any of the Beckham children are models, but fashion houses seem to like to hire celeb children these days 🤷‍♀️

You mean like she's well behaved and her mother can take her anywhere? It's lovely when kids are like that.

It was an unkind and unnecessary comment regarding the girls appearance
From a supposed adult.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 01/10/2022 21:40

The plunging neckline and lace is inappropriate for an 11 year old.

eyeteevee · 01/10/2022 09:25

What are her parents meant to say? No you cant wear that dress becuase a bunch of adults will pick you apart and have you responsible for all ills against women by the end of the evening?

Yes her parents should have got her something more suited to her 11 years to wear. I'm not picking the child apart btw, it's the parents responsibility. All done to show off VBs failing clothes line.

Awful couple they've pushed their children into the limelight from day one.
Got much more respect for people who guard their children's privacy more.

Iammeiamfree · 01/10/2022 21:59

It's my opinion that it's inappropriate for an 11 year old because it's a sexy dress, designed to make the wearer look more sexually attractive. I'm in my 30s and don't consider myself a pearl clutcher, just feel so uncomfortable seeing her dressed like this 😕

When my kids were young they were doing a fund raising thing to raise money for a severely disabled child. The Beckhams heard about it, stepped in and provided the £3,000 for the item that was being collected for. They were absolutely lovely as were Victoria's parents who both phoned me about arrangements. Her dad asked me if the kids would like signed photos of them as he was just going up to their house so he could get them some. I said yes please and the kids were thrilled.

If they are awful I can't imagine what nice people must be like.

NevieSticks · 02/10/2022 00:13

I think they do something like this to distract.

wouldthatbeworse · 02/10/2022 00:22

Completely inappropriate. But they knew what they were doing

Judijudi · 02/10/2022 00:33

No that’s not right. A V almost to her waist it’s obscene!

Aspiringmatriarch · 02/10/2022 00:44

I think it's ok actually. She's young enough for it to not look sexual IYSWIM, there's nothing there to fill it out. And she looks happy and comfortable. Anything can be sexualised by perverts, which is a horrible thought, but that's not her problem. I think it helps that she's wearing trainers and no makeup so it's relaxed and fashiony rather than cosplaying as a grownup.

LondonQueen · 02/10/2022 01:00

She's a child in a dress, nothing more to it. It's concerning people think more of it.

Swimminginthelake · 02/10/2022 01:01

I don't really get the issue with it... and I can be a bit of a prude but.. all you can see is a bit of skin...no.more than when kids wear crop tops or bikinis...I get more annoyed about bras and bra tops marketed at 8 year old girls to be honest.

Sigma33 · 02/10/2022 07:42

People think more about it because clothes send messages that vary by culture. Which is why we all choose certain styles/colours etc, and why there is a fashion industry.

Think of Victorian erotica - women showing very little skin, but in the context of their culture the images were definitely sexualised.

In the example I gave above going topless was the norm for unmarried young women, so not sexualised. Not the case with the 1980s page 3 photos, they were intended to be sexual.

In the cultural context of today's mainstream UK/USA culture a plunging neckline with black lace is a sexualised message. Which isn't a problem with an 11-year-old dressing up in Mum's clothes at home. Is more of a problem when all over SM to promote Mum's fashion brand.
