To think the way she dressed was a little inappropriate

I want to start by saying I am a bit of a closet fan of the Beckhams and I also want to point out I have a 13 year old daughter. I have just seen pics of the Beckhams at some fashion show and as always, they all look fab. However, I am a wee bit disappointed in what Harper is wearing. It’s a beautiful dress and she looks gorgeous in it but for me, it just looks a little too old for someone of her age (11? 12?). Am I being a bit of a pearl clutcher here or would people tend to agree?

It’s a weird neck line for a child. Definitely wouldn’t let my 11 year old wear that and she wouldn’t want to. I have zero issue with crop tops and short shorts etc on kids but that dress is something a 30 year old would wear.

Curtainpalm · 01/10/2022 11:03

Ha, just started a thread on the exact same topic.

AutumnCrow · 01/10/2022 11:09

I think it's a bit sad that we even have to know how an 11 year old child dresses. And what shoes she 'teams' with her clothes.

In my humble opinion the whole Beckham family look bloody awful in those photos from the Paris Fashion Show events. I haven't such such a strange collection of trousers, frocks and since I was in the audience for the Rocky Horror Show in the late 1970s.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 01/10/2022 11:09

Generally I think girls should wear exactly what they want, but I wouldn't have been very happy with dd wearing that in public at 11. Mainly because it's an evening dress cut for an adult body she doesn't yet have, so it just looks odd. Agree with pps that she looks as though she's raided the dressing up box.

Hangingandneedsleep · 01/10/2022 11:09

@Aprilx I didn’t know the ‘rules’ . The original photo was on my Newsfeed so just (wrongly) assumed people would have seen it. I know now that isn’t the case and if I ask an AIBU a about a picture again, I will make sure I include a link! Again, apologies! And @WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps , it was genuine. Lesson learnt on all accounts!

It does the job, though - keeps them in the headlines.

StarWitness · 01/10/2022 11:11

Putting your 11 yr old front and centre of your grand entrance to a fashion show = people will look at and comment on what she is wearing. The neckline on that dress isn’t appropriate. I feel sorry for the child.

MsRosley · 01/10/2022 11:11

Absolutely not an appropriate dress for an 11 year old. That poor kid.

Twinsmummy1812 · 01/10/2022 11:11

I agree. It wasn’t horrendous but it was Ill fitting and just not appropriate for her age.

very pretty girl though and seems very loved.

pigsDOfly · 01/10/2022 11:12

Contrary to what the captions say she's doesn't 'look so grown up' she looks like a child who's been rummaging through her mum's old cast off dresses.

Why put a dress like that on a child? Particularly if you're then going to put her hair in pigtails, which make her look even younger than her 11 years.

It's a bloody ugly dress anyway. Surely they could have found her something a bit 'glamorous' that didn't expose her chest like that.

stickynoter · 01/10/2022 11:14

I was reading this expecting to think the dress was fine and this would be an over reaction. I'm quite laidback about what people choose to wear and admire people that are a bit more daring in their choices

However, this is completely wrong!!!

Yeah, they use themselves for their own publicity; and as The Addams Family they're very good at it and thus far have been humoured. Victoria is supposed to be a good sport and David did his people's queue thing, good old David in his flat cap. But as the adult family has grown, some of them are starting to look more and more like a bunch of grifting loons.

It's a shame to drag an actual child into it.

Image for those who are hard of Google

Slightly more concerned about how skinny that poor model is next to her.

Wheresmymoneytree · 01/10/2022 11:20

I came here prepared to say she’s a child in a dress why are we sexualising her etc. I have just seen the dress and now I’ve got conflicting thoughts because yes she’s a child in a dress that she likes, but at the same time, we teach kids about private parts and what would be covered by a bathing suit is private and they don’t let people see or touch to protect them, for that little girl all of this has been undermined so does it make her more vulnerable to exploitation in the future.

It's not really a healthy world, is it?

TheRubyRedshoes · 01/10/2022 11:21

It's interesting, that with all that money they can't simply look well dressed.
David doesn't look too bad but he's in classic clothes.

They just don't look well dressed.

The dress on Harper is odd.its negliege

Byebyebigbelly · 01/10/2022 11:22

I do feel sorry for Harper. I've no doubt that she is adored by her parents but wll have grown up receiving some fairly toxic messages about the importance of looks, figure etc. I hope her mother's attitudes to food and diet have not filtered through to her but it seems unlikely.

Yes, that struck me as well. Particularly the one in the green dress.

Not sure how healthy it is to expose a child to that environment.

I clicked on the title really hoping you were going to say that, at 7.30 this morning, you'd seen a woman walking her dog while wearing her dressing gown 😁

I don’t think it’s bad. It would be weird worn with her hair up and heels but the way it’s styled, with plaited pigtails and trainers, gives it a ‘dressed-up in Mum’s clothes’ vibe.

Luminousnose · 01/10/2022 11:32

I think I was pretty easy going with my DD’s clothing choices - bit my tongue quite a lot - but I don’t think it’s age appropriate either. As PPs have said it’s a dress designed to draw attention to (in this case non-existent) cleavage. I’ve seen quite a lot of posts on Mumsnet accusing people of sexualising their DD’s by dressing them in clothes more suitable for teens. Just because she’s also wearing plaits and trainers, doesn’t change the fact that the dress is designed to make an adult woman look sexy imo. Interestingly, the yellow does look marginally better, although still not right.

She’s a really sweet looking girl and normally appears to be dressed just right for her age. I think it was probably just an aberration this time - yes, she was most likely desperate to wear it and they indulged her.

FlorettaB · 01/10/2022 11:32

The model in green is Bella Hadid. She’s always exceptionally thin but probably more so ATM because if this

whataboutnow · 01/10/2022 11:33

I think the dress is inappropriate but this is the Beckhams who have used their kids to promote themselves for ever. I also notice in many of the pictures of her in flowing gowns recently how she holds up her skirt presumably so everyone can see the trainers which the family are being paid to promote. every comment either positive or negative invites views of whatever brand it is.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 01/10/2022 11:34

It's too low cut. It looks like one of those dresses that Amanda Holden wears to show her boobs off. Absolutely no way would my dd have been allowed that at 11.

I feel for her. She's going to go through puberty soon and have the media glare and comments. She really needs protecting from it all. Eating Disorders are quite common in the circles she's mixing in.
