Trans charity accused of offering chest binders without parental consent

How did we get to this point that people are saying this is brave and cheering it on?

AIBU - to think it's insanity
YABU - it's "lifesaving" and rainbow unicorns

It's not good enough is it? This is the tip of a child abuse scandal that is going to be unprecedented. And the casualties will have to come to terms with the fact that they asked for it themselves by using tactics they were taught as children by the schools, social media, their friends, to mutilate their own bodies, Lush, Starbucks, Emma Watson, Jameela Jamil etc all cheering them on.

It’s like an anorexia-support group sending out laxatives. I’m gobsmacked.

This is what I thought! I was an anorexic teen and some of this stuff reminds me of the pro ana forums I used to visit. If this "gender dysphoria" had been a thing when I was a teen I probably would have gone with it. It's genuinely scary.

Theres also an undertone that no one seems to acknowledge.

Theres one demograohic who are arrested/prosecuted for ironing their daughters breasts and cutting her genitals.

And another demographic who are praised and invited into schools and companies for giving drugs used ti chemically castrate sex offenders and taking their 16 year old to Thailand and inverting their penis and removing their testicals.

If anyone can tell me what the difference is here ..
🤔

Excellent point, thank you for making it.

No difference whatsoever except that the first group are quite rightly considered to be committing crimes and are prosecuted if found to be carrying out such atrocious acts on girls.

Worth having a watch of this revealing TED talk by the CEO of Mermaids.

I have an autistic teen daughter who is gender non conforming, in the sense that she's not into make up/ wears boys clothes etc. Luckily she knows she is a girl and isn't (yet) making any suggestion otherwise.

I know at least 2 of her peers with similar needs to her and who similarly are not into girly things who are non binary who would be vulnerable enough to go down the route of obtaining breast binders with or without parental consent. These are vulnerable girls.

This is the road to double mastectomies because these girls don't want to develop breasts. Its massively disturbing.

Mermaids needs closing. Their activities are not surprising giving the lengths the founder went to to change her child's appearance on their 16th birthday.

BeeRogue · 29/09/2022 12:53

Just to be clear chest binding and chest ironing aren't the same thing.

One is mutilating someone else's chest with heavy or hot objects, damaging the breast tissue permanently. The other is wrapping your own chest with soft material to reduce the appearance of the breasts. It causes no more physical harm than wearing sports bras - in fact, it causes less harm by distributing the weight more evenly across the back.

Breast ironing is: “the process during which young pubescent girls’ breasts are ironed, massaged, flattened and/or pounded down over a period of time (sometimes years) in order for the breasts to disappear or delay the development of the breasts entirely...large stones, a hammer or spatula that have been heated over scorching coals can be used to compress the breast tissue."

Chest binding is: "the flattening of breasts with constrictive materials such as cloth strips, purpose-built undergarments, often using spandex or other synthetic fiber, and shirts layered from tight to loose...Binders may also be used as alternatives to bras or for reasons of propriety."

Children and trans issues are an entirely separate discussion point but being outraged by your own confusion doesn't help real issues by discussed. Trans people are not engaging in chest ironing.

It's worse than that because Laxatives pass through your system and most people who stop abusing them recover.

Breast binders cause lasting tissue damage and permanently change the shape of the breasts.

Autistic and gay children are definitely over represented in thise who have a trans identity. Trans away the gay...

The Ted talk posted above shows susie green herself assuming at first her young child was just gay. The husband couldn't cope with his male child playing with the "wrong toys" so they threw them all out.

She should have thrown the husband out instead.

I think you’ve misunderstood the important point that @Whatwouldscullydo made upthread.

Moreover, comparing wearing a bra with wearing a breast binder is ludicrous. I think you’re scraping the barrel here.

Well that's OK then!

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 29/09/2022 13:02

Teaching and providing access to, safe chest binding is not encouraging trans. It's not encouraging chest binding. It's ensuring that those that are questioning have access to do be able to do it SAFELY. Breast ironing is incredibly dangerous and very, very different from binding.

Teaching safe sex and providing access to contraception isn't about encouraging young people to have sex. It's ensuring that when they do, they do it safely. This is the same.

The point made is that she doesn't know the difference...

It literally is the same as wearing a tight non-wired bra. Many women do wear breast binders instead of bras. In fact, many breast binders are bras that have been re-marketed (i.e. the same exact product in different packaging).

I don't think you've seen a chest binder. They are not like bras at all. More like large bands that hold the breasts very tightly against the chest. Either by squashing the breasts for, with larger breasts, by literally folding them over. That is why they cause skin infections, breathing difficulties, and over time permanently change the shape of the breast.

Believerinbiology · 29/09/2022 13:09

BeeRogue and Throwingsomecrumbs, did you read the ops 2nd post? The met specifically refer to binding with garments/material being included with breast ironing.
As previous posters have asked why is it child abuse when one group of children are subjected to it but not when another are?

Believerinbiology · 29/09/2022 13:11

Maybe also have a read of the stories of detransitioners who still hate their breasts as they are now deformed from years of binding. And that's before you get into all the other physical and psychological effects

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/09/2022 13:12

It is not like wearing a sports bra.

Even mermaids released guidence warning those wearing binders to stay out of the sun and reduce exercise.

Even trans charities and providers of binders warn if the dangers

Who you are (beliefs, points of view etc) when you are 14, 18, 28 is not who you are when you reach 30+. Honestly, im worried for these children being encouraged into this, both boys and girls.

mrsjohnnylawrence · 29/09/2022 13:15

Lymphatic drainage happens in the breasts. Restrict that and your health will suffer.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 29/09/2022 13:19

There are safe ways to bind but only a medical professional should be advising and giving children binders/binding products with no education or safe space to ask for medical help is doing far more harm than good

FrancescaContini · 29/09/2022 13:21

I don’t think that you’re serious. Many women wear breast binders - really?

Maybe it's better to teach our girls that there is no wrong way to be one and that there is no need to harm their bodies or modify them, they are perfect just as they are.

Or is that too much to expect!

Why would a person who wants to promote health restrict healthy tissue like that?

Spottybluepyjamas · 29/09/2022 13:22

Ah yes, encourage girls to mutilate themselves in a misguided attempt to transition to being male, instead of helping them to break gender stereotypes and embrace who they are. FFS.

When will this end. I feel so much for the poor girls doing this to themselves now - their future selves are going to be incredibly unhappy.
