Jack Monroe off Twitter

1000 replies

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Well the DM know just how litigious she is so yep, I agree that they're having just a little dabble here

JubileeTrifle · 17/11/2022 18:35

She’s not litigious. She threatens people with taking them to court and does nothing.
She sued one person once in an open and shut case of mistaken identity. Which is why her lawyer got involved as it was easy cash.
She just uses it to shut people down.

RitaSueAndBobTo · 17/11/2022 19:46

@JubileeTrifle yes good point, you're right

JubileeTrifle · 17/11/2022 19:57

I mean it works. People have the general impression that she is litigious and successful at it…

category12 · 17/11/2022 19:58

I think she's said she has a 100% record 😂

DMLady · 17/11/2022 20:14

I think Jack Monroe has done a lot of good things, personally.

Does that negate the bad things?

She has.

So what?

WaddleAway · 17/11/2022 20:18

She may have done. Does that negate all the bad things she’s done though? Can you get away with lying about your financial circumstances to encourage people to give you cash, just because you’ve raised money for a Foodbank? Can you get away with publishing untested, inedible recipes just because your intentions are apparently good? Can you get away with telling people they can easily feed themselves on £20 a week? Can you get away with not delivering the rewards that people have paid for, for 2 whole years? Can you get away with being abusive to disabled followers on Twitter, telling them to go and ‘touch the grass’? Doing some good things doesn’t take away the culpability for doing bad things.

CatJumperTwat · 17/11/2022 20:41

She has.

Has she though? The only thing her defenders usually point to is the way poverty is calculated by the ONS, but that's just another thing she lied about and inflated her own role in. As far as I can see all she's ever done to campaign against poverty is write tweets about it.

JemimaTab · 17/11/2022 20:42

In terms of good things, Jack has not done nearly half of what she says she has.

  1. She’s raised money for the trussell trust (for example).
  2. no, it doesn’t negate the bad things, and I didn’t suggest it did.
GreenTeaTuesdays · 17/11/2022 20:50

She seems to exaggerate her involvement in a lot of the "good things".

I saw a bit on here / Twitter and didn't think much of it but then someone posted a link to her Grenfell blog and honestly the woman seems like a complete fantasist.

Add to that the fact she then uses her made up / heavily exaggerated stories (poverty, sex work, single mum) to take money from people and the bad really does outweigh the good unfortunately.

WaddleAway · 17/11/2022 20:52

She’s also raised a lot of money for herself, with which she’s bought Vivienne Westwood clothing, expensive furniture, Mulberry handbags, expensive watches and jewellery (amongst many other things), while claiming to be boiling soap to make shower gel (!) and taking her lightbulbs out as she’s so poor. With the obligatory rattle of the tip jar, obviously.

So what?

‘So what?’ That’s kind of impossible to respond to, isn’t it…? I mean, you could say so what to everything…

I'm just wondering what 'I think Jack Monroe has done a lot of good things, personally.' has got to do with the fact she's a lying grifter that knowingly takes money off people who can't afford to give?

Her tee mill fiasco did at least raise money for the Trussell Trust.

She has raised awareness in an odd kind of way.

But she's also a massive liar and grifter!

I think Jack Monroe has done a lot of good things, personally.

10 years.

Name 10 successful and provable things she's done that weren't first and foremost self serving.

Clymene · 17/11/2022 21:02

Last year, the Trussell Trust's income was nearly £60 million, up from £14m in 2020. They spent less than £20 million of that £60m.

They charge foodbanks for membership. I won't donate to them.

To be really honest, I felt this whole thread was just so nasty that I couldn’t leave it without at least pointing out that she’s not all bad. Very few people are.

  1. She’s raised money for the trussell trust (for example).
  2. no, it doesn’t negate the bad things, and I didn’t suggest it did.

Her customers bought offensive t-shirts.
She had to be pestered into sending anything to TT.
When she did, she finally sent over 11k from people buying tshirts she claimed had raised in a few days.
The t-shirts were on sale for over 8 months after that and she claimed they only raised £250 or so.

Oh and TT had no idea she was doing it, they had no hand in it at all except to accept the donation from here.

So.. If her followers bought enough t-shirts and they raised 11k in a few days, where's the 8 months + of money that would run into the 10s of 1000s?
Why didnt she declare how much it raised at the time?
Why didn't she publish who it went to?
Why did she try to claim the Foodbanks & charities she helped requested anonymity?
Then say it only raised £250 in several months anyway?

Not quite as charitable as it appears when you really look at it, in fact, she didnt do a damn thing except promote the Teemill store..

People on this thread know what she has claimed to do for others. It doesn’t need ‘pointing out’. Most of us just happen to think that the bad outweighs the good. And it’s not ‘nasty’ to think that.

I reckon some of us know a little.more than others..
Some who only know surface level claims made by JM herself.
