"There's 100 or so votes missing. Abstentions?"

Went to Mordaunt who was then knocked out.

Interesting. Hadn't a lot of them resigned in order to get rid of Boris? Were they not allowed to vote? I don't have much knowledge about how these things work.

Abhannmor · 29/09/2022 13:13

There's 100 or so votes missing. Abstentions?

They would have gone to the third placed candidate.

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 13:20

No, actually, that wouldn't make sense either as I think Sunak was one of the ones who resigned?

This is a problem. I don't think that a lot of people understand much about politics (and I put myself firmly in that pile).

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 13:20

The last round was between 3 candidates. The final 2 (Truss & Sunak) to go before the membership.

Those that resigned Ministerial positions were still Tory MPs and therefore free to vote throughout.

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 13:20

Fladdermus · 29/09/2022 13:19

They would have gone to the third placed candidate.

But there were only 2 candidates at the end?

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 13:22

Last round of MPs voted was Mordaunt, Truss & Sunak. Mordaunt knocked out.

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 13:22

Ok, so the votes by the MPs were taken early in the race? Then the campaigning (for weeks) was for the membership votes? Doesn't make sense.

Fladdermus · 29/09/2022 13:22

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 13:20

But there were only 2 candidates at the end?

There were 3 in the final vote from MPs. The 2 with the highest votes, Sunak and Truss, then went on to face the hustings and the party membership vote.

Fladdermus · 29/09/2022 13:22

Oh dear. So by the time the shit had really hit the fan, the MPs had already cast their vote?

Liz Truss has opened a gateway to HELL !

notimagain · 29/09/2022 13:49

Apologies for the confusion I have caused by not listing Penny Mordants votes (105) in my pp:

For completeness there is a full stage by stage breakdown of the whole process here:

notimagain · 29/09/2022 13:51

Spelling 1/10 - Mordaunt, nor Mordant..

AlecTrevelyan006 · 29/09/2022 13:51

I’m not a huge fan of Sunak but unlike Truss he’s not an idiot

He [Sunak] says Ms Truss' plans will put the UK's public finances in "serious jeopardy" and fuel inflation, leading to even higher prices in the shops.

In an interview with Vanessa Feltz on BBC Radio 2, he said: "Liz's plans are promising the earth to everybody. I don't think you can have your cake and eat it.

"I don't think life's that simple, and I think her plan risks making the situation worse when you're borrowing that much money for tax cuts at a time when inflation's already going up."

For some reason, people seem blinded by the university qualifications of people (and in particular, by which university was attended) without actually looking at anything else. It's the equivalent of conducting interviews for the position of Surgeon and looking at CVs and choosing someone with a degree in anatomy from Oxford over an experienced doctor, with surgical experience and a degree in Medicine (except it's from Leeds)!

How people couldn't see that Sunak was more qualified for this job than this lunatic Ms. Truss is baffling to me!

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 14:15

To be quite honest, if I was part of the Oxford or Cambridge alumni, I would no longer be inviting anyone with political aspirations to 'read' there.

Thanks very much for the explainer. Will have a read now. Every day is a school day when you're a twit like me

God almighty. I've just read through that timeline @notimagain and Sunak was always the front runner with the MPs. Why the actual fuck did the membership not vote for him?

Heswipedright · 29/09/2022 15:24

I'm actually starting to come around to the notion that some people shouldn't be allowed to vote 😂I'm joking

Croque · 29/09/2022 15:43

In only knew one of the candidates, by sight, when I was a student. They were really arrogant. They occupied a top table in the dining hall and none of the other students would ever dare sit there; not even for the novelty experience. Strangely enough, I somehow had a place at the table but I never did speak to them (or vice-versa) but they saw fit to comment on me occasionally as though I was not there.

I would have spoken to them but they were Tory, forces kids and we literally had nothing in common. I was surprised to see them standing. I never expected they would go into politics and I never tracked what they were up to in the intervening years!

Did anyone else hear Chris Philp on R4 Today this morning?
Mishal H did her best, but he very confidently talked absolute bollocks at 100 miles an hour, defending the indefensible with lies and more lies. He's dangerous.

Yes, had to turn it off when he said something about the tax cuts giving people more money in their pockets. Most of us aren't going to be seeing the benefits of these tax cuts, only the very wealthy! The 1% tax cut many earners will be wiped out by freezing the level at which you start to pay tax.

Dave20 · 29/09/2022 17:27

Will people regret Brexit once they realise it’s going to cost us lots of money ? Maybe ok for the non poor pensioners who live in paid off expensive houses and good work place pensions.
And if Brexit really is a disaster, I’m sure the likes of Nigel Farage will disappear and distance themselves form it.

No idea. He was always the better candidate l. He atleast understands economics. He was against a tax cuts and government borrowing lists of money.
Even the Bank of England had to step in to bail the government out.

Croque · 29/09/2022 17:31

The top comment in the Daily Mail during hustings will provide a direct answer to that one. it is not imaginative either, I'm afraid.
