Liz Truss had to be convinced to issue statement amid market turmoil after mini-budget

@GreenLunchBox this. I saw Keir Starmer speaking earlier this year and he was asked about his time at Oxford (where he did his postgrad, he was an undergrad at Leeds). He said it's really odd, full of these really odd people who think that all of the oddness is normal. Said he was glad he had gone to Leeds first as it maybe could have been easy to become 'one of them' and start forgetting what the real world is actually like, even though he was from a WC background and attended a state run grammar, so not from a privileged background at all.

He only spent a year there and had a reference point, but it's easy to see that if you had spent your life at a school like Eton, then gone to Oxford and then straight into finance or something similar, you'd have no experience or view of the real world. What's insane is what a tiny percentage of the country are educated/bought up this way but what an overwhelming amount of them there are in parliament. Normal people are overwhelmingly being represented by people who've got no clue what our lives really look like.

@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ

Yes you have absolutely hit the nail on the head about the problems we are facing in the UK.

"Normal people are overwhelmingly being represented by people who've got no clue what our lives really look like"

A tiny, very upper class selection of society who all went to the same schools and universities trying to govern literally everyone else when they have zero life experience and very narrow views having never stepped outside their circles. What happened to equality and diversity, shouldn't it include background??!

Why are we surprised? The Tory party...this is them! Look at Reece Mog..he is just the external manifestation of what all Tory party members are on the inside. Ebeneezer Scrooge!!!

Let's hope they get visited by the four ghosts soon so they can at least change their ways in what is hopefully going to be the last 2 years of their premiership for a good while!

I didn't vote for them and I certainly wouldn't dream of voting for them now after the disgraceful performance we've seen over the last 12 years. I'm sure there will be more devious smear campaigns in the Tory loving media before the next general election, let's hope this time no one buys it!

I fully doubt Trussia (thanks who ever posted that, brilliant!) is going to last for the full remaining term, but back to Boris is surely not a good plan either?! Bring in the election early I say before anymore damage to the NHS and the economy ensues.

I did wonder if their “drastic spending cut” will be privatise the NHS.

It’s on a par with “bring back bankers bonuses” and “cut taxes for the rich” in terms of Tory wet dreams.

Well he was pretty clear in his budget speech- though didn't direct it specifically at NHS:

"If we really want to level up, Mr Speaker – we have to unleash the power of the private sector."

ShepherdMoons · 28/09/2022 10:19

I can't believe she made PM. After the absolute farce of Boris we now have another absolute waste of space. The only good thing is this might trigger a GE and we might get a Labour government in.

ChickenBurgers · 28/09/2022 10:22

SantiagoSky · 28/09/2022 09:28

Boris Johnson made Teresa May look like a genius in retrospect, and now Liz Truss makes Boris Johnson look like a genius in retrospect. The only things leveling up here is greediness and idiocy.

absolutely spot on. Terrifying.

Gastonia · 28/09/2022 10:23

When it looked like Liz Truss was going to be elected PM, I was worried about the economy. DH put my mind at rest. He said there was no point worrying about something we couldn't change, and anyway, no way would she do all that ridiculous stuff. He thought she was just trying to appeal to the Tory members. She'd find some excuse not to carry out her plans when she was elected.

Bloody hell! How wrong he was. The only thing he got right was that we're powerless until the next election. My only consolation is that we never voted for them last time.

PerkingFaintly · 28/09/2022 10:31

Probably the worse financial crisis that will affect the British population since ww2 and one that had its seeds baked in with the response to the financial crisis of 2008 with massive money printing and historic low interests rate

Yes, I was watching the series "The Decade the Rich Won" ( still on iPlayer www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0013xcf ), and someone, I think Alastair Darling, was saying they were well aware that the medicine they were using to get the country through the 2008 financial crisis, ie the money-printing, would have side-effects which would have to be dealt with afterwards, and that they were expecting to take restorative measures once the crisis had been survived.

But then Labour lost the 2010 election and Tories got in.

New chancellor George Osborne took one look at the money-printing and effectively said, what a jolly good wheeze – and just kept printing. Combined with his austerity programme, Osborne put the UK into a double-dip recession.

Cheminaufaules · 28/09/2022 10:33

Surely this debacle is easily remedied via a National Strike and a National refusal to pay any more to 'his majesty's' revenue until a competent government is put in place. A combined effort by the workers and the capitalists alike should do it. The vehicle that is the holy internet is already in place to facilitate widespread organisation.

PerkingFaintly · 28/09/2022 10:43

The vehicle that is the holy internet is also in place to allow shitstirrers from Who Knows Where to create complete chaos and destruction, and turn the UK fully into a basketcase.

Truss and Kwarteng's behaviour has affected almost all sectors of the population, top to bottom, and we the people are already well aware that what they've done is wrong, unsustainable, and they will need to be voted out. Their own party is allegedly planning it already.

Yes Gastonia , I'd have agreed with your DH tbh. I imagined she would move to the centre, reassure the Red Wall vote. She grew up in Yorkshire after all. Wrong.

I suppose she could blame Kwarteng. Replace him with someone more moderate. OK , sane will do. She could emulate Thatcher : increase VAT to claw back the tax cuts ? Got nothing to lose.

romatheroamer · 28/09/2022 10:45

Re SKS, (who, incidentally, I think would be a great improvement) it's interesting where this PMs/politicians can't be boring thing came in. I don't think either Maggie or Gordon Brown would have been a great laugh down the pub but they were respected in their different ways. I think it accounts for some of Boris' success and is linked to the cult of celebrity, certain TV programmes and print media.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 28/09/2022 10:45

They are doing it on purpose. Their friends will make lots of money shorting the pound. They will have a nice excuse for more ideological austerity measures. It is a choice they are making.

Don't be fooled into thinking they are making a mistake.

Croque · 28/09/2022 11:09

It was completely foreseeable. She will make Boris' legacy look as golden as his hair by the time she is done.

Alexandra2001 · 28/09/2022 11:09

So the BOE is now being forced to buy up "in whatever quantities necessary" Government long term Gilts.

This is unprecedented, not even done in the GFC.

BOE buying Govt debt.... but Corbyn.... what a fucking shower!

GU24Mum · 28/09/2022 11:10

What day of the week is the meeting with the King? I know he can't say anything but I'd love to be a fly on the wall for what's the first proper weekly meeting after they've seemingly driven headlong straight for financial chaos....

Croque · 28/09/2022 11:12

I always thought that she would ultimately be too dim to pull off a Depression but I guess she proved me wrong on that point. Rishi was not an example of loyalty or transparency but a million times better. He would have sailed into power if he had been the right colour for the party members to vote for him.

I should think the discussion of scrapping environmental laws would also be interesting. It's indefensible and Charles is an environmentalist who knows his stuff

I remember when I was younger thinking it'd be nice of politicians were a bit more "human" and that it'd be funny if they said what they really think. I saw that Have I Got News for You with "Boris" and laughed my head off. It's only in latter years I've realised that being serious and focusing on doing a bloody good job, when you've got the lives of millions in your hands, is actually a very good idea. A bit of light relief, fine, acting the clown, not fine.

The Tories should not be allowed to choose another PM! They have already given us Boris and Liz!

Alexander and Mary. They aren't even honest about their names.

jjimdak · 28/09/2022 11:28

Sunak seemed the sensible option, but I suspected that ordinary Tory party members wouldn’t vote for him for racist reasons, and lo and behold we have another barmy PM.

Didn’t Liz Truss study PPE - so surely she must have some basic understanding about economics…or maybe not!

I see that Kwarteng went to Elton College and read Classics and History at Trinity. No doubt his next step will be to print more money, forgetting what happened in Germany when that was done - rampant inflation and the rise of the Nazis.

Kwarteng and Truss are completely out of their depth.

He can't print more money, his only option is to roll back tax cuts, reduce borrowing by cutting spending.

The worry is now pensions, thats driving the BoE reaction to what isn't "global Markets" but UK markets and thats down to either deliberate corruption or incompetence.

jjimdak · 28/09/2022 11:37

Do you think Rees-Mogg is such a Victorian that workhouses will be brought back “for the poor, feckless people”?

jjimdak · 28/09/2022 11:39

…and why not kill and technology/engineering enterprise too by bringing back imperial units!

Thank fuck we didn’t have Labour it would have been so much worse.

(Just getting that in early Grin)

Don't forget:

At least we don't have chaos with Ed Milliband and thank the heavens we don't have Jeremy Corbyn because he would have been unelectable in a general election...

MrAutumnal · 28/09/2022 11:57

People saying ‘yes it’s awful but there is really no alternative and Labour can’t/won’t do X Y Z’ really need to do some more reading beyond MN.

No political party is going to be perfect for everyone but if you’ve not heard Starmer’s recent speech at the very least you shouldn’t be spouting such drivel.

HOW, just exactly HOW does it get any worse than this?

He is not JC. The BoE, IMF and global markets who are independent of the government ALL think it’s a shit show so enlighten us all how ‘there is no credible alternative’ and how what Labour have outlined is so much worse. I’m usually a LibDem supporter myself but would happily have Starmer to these lot.
