Well, I knew that already, but every day she shocks me with the heights her deluded self-confidence goes to

Liz Truss had to be convinced to issue statement amid market turmoil after mini-budget

Idiot or lunatic?

Both?

Yes. And also has all qualities to be a perfect dictator. Her way or highway and no regard for rules

I think the Truss government is basically asset-stripping the country. Grabbing what they can before the whole country collapses.

This. This is exactly what they're doing at this point. And it's horrendous that they can do it in plain sight.

GreenLunchBox · 27/09/2022 21:23

Yes but at least Labour know what a woman is 🙄🤔 (I'm being sarcastic by the way)

When people don't have food to eat, feed their kids, afford basic life amenities like a place to live, heating in winter, definition of woman becomes less important. Some posters act like labour is Taliban and will take women to dark ages. And I care for women rights too but in the hierarchy of needs food and shelter are more important and clearly under Tory govt, many will be deprived of this.

reesewithoutaspoon · 28/09/2022 09:03

I, ve seen her referred to as Margarine Thatcher, and its spot on, even during her campaign she tried to model herself on the iron lady, but she's a piss poor synthetic copy who was voted in because she was easily manipulated by people who are benefitting from this shit show.

DeclineandFall · 28/09/2022 09:10

It was always going to take something for people to see what has been under the noses for years that this Tory government are right wing free market ultras who have no-ones best interests at heart except their own. Mortgages appear to be the thing. Tax, deaths, NHS crumbling, dodgy deals and scandals didnt. If they had set out their economic stall at the beginning no sane person would've voted for them. Brexit and the lies they told about that was their Trojan horse. It's why we are left with the dregs of political 'talent' like Truss and Jacob Rees Mogg because it's fucking stupid.

Maybe she wants to emulate Thatcher so much that she wants a poll tax moment?

SheilaWilde · 28/09/2022 09:21

Her and her mates know she's got 12 months to do what the fuck they want. They're like toddlers in Toys r Us.

vera99 · 28/09/2022 09:24

This at last is the real Full English Brexit, not the one 'the people'` thought they voted for but the one the rich backers lobbied and backed to achieve. Britannia Unhinged. They have callously broken our country. They are evil.

SantiagoSky · 28/09/2022 09:28

Boris Johnson made Teresa May look like a genius in retrospect, and now Liz Truss makes Boris Johnson look like a genius in retrospect. The only things leveling up here is greediness and idiocy.

movingonup2022 · 28/09/2022 09:32

Is there no way an election can ever be called early? I don't know if I can survive another 12 months of this.

vera99 · 28/09/2022 09:34

My brother is a director at an online bank, he whatsapped me yesterday, and said it proper kicked off in banking yesterday afternoon when it sunk in with their customers that they're not gonna be able to afford mortgages OR bills. He said they're 'getting hammered', so many of their customers affected, 90 minutes wait on their phone lines which they've never had before.

Probably the worse financial crisis that will affect the British population since ww2 and one that had its seeds baked in with the response to the financial crisis of 2008 with massive money printing and historic low interests rates - take those away and add in the end of globalisation and war and a global pandemic and then epic fuckuppery from Truss and her acolytes and we are in the perfect storm. This winter is going to be absolutely brutal for millions of families.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 28/09/2022 07:45

We are now governed by the far right of the Tory party, the ERG and their shady think tank cronies. Apparently the blueprint for their ideology is in their book Britannia Unchained, where they say that Britain needs to adopt a far reaching form of free market economics with fewer employment laws and workers rights. Brexit has opened the door for this as we are no longer bound by EU laws. So all this 'taking back control' was more about removing environmental protections, consumer protections and workers rights so they can create this market free of what they see as constraints on business.

Yes and that is what people tried to warn people of during the referendum but no-one listened 🙄

user1471600850 · 28/09/2022 09:56

Who knew we would end up with worse than Boris?

GreenLunchBox · 28/09/2022 09:56

During the leadership contest I wrote on a MN thread that Truss comes across as being spectacularly stupid. Posters said she can't possibly be stupid because she has a degree in PPE from Oxford! They said I was being misogynistic!

Even I wasn't expecting it to take her 8 days to cause carnage on this scale.

OP posts:
Dogtooth · 28/09/2022 10:01

I mean, she's abysmal but on a personal level she's had the stress of the Johnson downfall, a fairly gruelling leadership campaign followed by death of the queen and straight into this shitfest.

The mess is of her own making, I don't feel sorry for her but it must be a whirlwind and in her shoes I'd be crying every ten minutes and stress-watching the West Wing to calm me down (probably why I'm not PM tbh)

I don't think she's an idiot, you can't get a PPE degree without brains. I think people often underestimate just how clear and robust you have to be to be PM though, it takes special qualities. Being intelligent is not enough, you have to be able to balance arguments and make fine judgments.

By all accounts, this lot just bulldoze through whatever they feel like doing instead of testing their ideas and listening to opposing views. It's their arrogance that is the problem, not stupidity.

N4ish · 28/09/2022 10:01

This is Britianna Unchained in its full glory. Brexit was just the first step to enable this to happen. To be fair they didn't hide any of it, it was always the plan. Also to be fair Sunak warned that all of this would happen if Truss got in. So Tory party members can't say they weren't warned.

Every day I drive to work and think "most of these people on the road have voted in this government and like it and I really don't understand it"

Except they didn’t.

About 32 million votes were cast in this election. The turnout was 67.3% of registered voters, which represents a 1.5% drop on the 2017 general election.

The Conservatives won the most seats - 365 - and also the biggest share of votes, 45%, or about 13.9 million.

This government got 45% out of 67% of registered voters. Not convincing, is it?

But that's no different/lower than most other GEs?

A lot of people who voted for brexit (and ukip in 2015 elections), switched to conservative in 2017 and 2019 GE - purely for the brexit reason. If you remember, Ukip pulled all their candidates from those as they knew it would just divide voters between them, while brexit hadn't been signed, sealed and Labour kept making noises about reversing it. Ukip had 12.6% of the vote in 2015, that arguably mostly all turned conservative in the subsequent couple of elections (and maybe some didn't bother to vote at all).

Now brexit is done and dusted, conservatives will be haemorrhaging a lot of voters who only went that there because they were the only party committed to that. They were going to take a battering at the next GE, before Truss, but I think she's made it a dead cert that they'll lose power. Slightly irritating that Labour don't need to do anything in opposition, they just sit there and watch conservatives score own goals repeatedly.

romatheroamer · 28/09/2022 10:05

Just listened to a bit of the Radio5 phone-in....the general consensus was the same as on here but there was a Tory councillor on, I listened trying to understand why he thought it was all good but he gabbled so much it was difficult to follow. Then Nicky C said "and we're going to be joined by Sir John Redwood".
No, enough, there's only so much I can take....radio off.

Stripyhoglets1 · 28/09/2022 10:06

Livelovebehappy · 27/09/2022 23:44

The problem is there’s no alternative prospective leader we have confidence in, in any of the parties. Labour or Tory, all clowns. They’re all a shower of shit with not a clue between them. People turn to the Tories because the alternative is unthinkable. There needs to be another party out there which can offer us what we want. But there’s no-one.

Kier Starmers speech should give people confidence hes capable .

But keep trotting out the line that there's no one better etc etc. Sadly it seems to work but I think when people can't at their mortgage they might look a bit further than this bot shared sentiment.

BluOcty · 28/09/2022 10:08

Do you remember when May had a coughing fit and the letters fell of her podium? The press acted like it was End Times 😂 Or Miliband eating a bacon sandwich. Oh the nostalgia and political naïveté!

Stripyhoglets1 · 28/09/2022 10:09

Its unthinkable that people will keep on accepting the destruction of their finances and lives instead of looking at labour.

We (as a country) were well off under the last Labour gov until the global banking crisis. And Gordon brown was getting us out of that when the tories /lib dems got in and shafted progress with austerity- then brexit - now this!

Corbyn would have been a jughtmare but Labour has got free of him and his crowd - - so are ready to govern now.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 28/09/2022 10:13

This is Keir Starmer's moment, he better be ready. From what I've seen over the last few weeks, he is.

Plus, I'd feel much better sending a sensible, smart and possibly boring person to represent us on the world stage than sending any of the current cabinet. They are just so embarassing.

1dayatatime · 28/09/2022 10:13

@Stripyhoglets1

"Kier Starmers speech should give people confidence hes capable .

+++

I do t disagree with you. I am under no illusions that if Keir Starmer was PM we would still be in an enormous economic mess with people struggling on cost of living along with other countries. But the key difference is that I genuinely believe he would be able to make it a tiny bit less shit than the current mess and certainly wouldn't make it worse like the current PM and Chancellor are doing.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 28/09/2022 10:14

I also think Starmer would be trying to make it better for the country.

I just don't believe that of Truss or Kwarteng: I don't trust their motives one bit.
