Labour would be even worse grrrr

In the pub last night, rolling news headlines on the TV and we talked briefly about rising interest rates/falling pound.

One man trotted out the now tired line "Labour would be even worse".

"Why?" I said, "what is it that they would do less well?" He couldn't answer, as I find is often the case with people who are certain Labour would be worse. They can't tell me why.

They may be right, they are certainly entitled to that view, but surely to be so convinced about any opinion you must also have some idea of why that is?

This is a middle aged man, does an ordinary, low level management/sales job. He'd tell you himself, he's not particularly clever and he's not interested in/doesn't undertlstand politics or the economy and yet he's so convinced of this view. It was probably unfair of me to challenge him knowing he wouldn't have an argument, but there seem to be a lot like him and frankly it's scary. 12 years and still people are convinced Tory is the best answer, even if they don't know why.

FWIW he's a nice man with other attributes, an encyclopedic music knowledge and good company provided you don't try and talk about the news 😆

YANBU. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but it seems reasonable to have some basis for an opinion.

For me, it's that note Labour left last time, saying 'Good Luck, There's no money left.' That a minister of state could openly admit getting the exchequer into such a mess, be fully aware of it, and think it's a cause for humour was unforgiveable. I'm scared that attitude persists, that it will happen again.

but Truss is no better.

The choice faced by the British electorate is appalling.

this. Both sides are frankly terrifying.

That note was a joke. It has been explained many times.

I agree. He is painful to listen to, like watching paint dry. I am sure he is a nice enough guy, but he has no charisma and his speeches remind me of someone speaking at a wake. The dull, monotone drone makes me switch off immediately.

Why do you want charisma over competence? I don't understand why people need politicians to be charismatic or entertaining. We need leaders who are intelligent, humane, hard working and competent. Starmer seems to be all of those things to me.

Cornettoninja · 27/09/2022 19:44

’Labour would be worse’
’Corbyn would have been worse’
’theres no better alternative’

All lazy repetition of propaganda when someone has nothing left to say.

At least it’s a decent red flag that I’m talking to someone who is politically lazy.

It doesn't matter that you don't understand why people need politicians to be charismatic or entertaining. It's a hell of a lot easier to just find someone who has those qualities and make them leader, and win elections, than it is to put someone who is intelligent, humane, hard working and competent, but totally uncharismatic out front, and then moan at people for not voting for them.

caringcarer · 27/09/2022 19:53

I just remember Gordon Brown getting half the country onto one benefit or another when previously no where near that amount of people were on benefits. It is unsustainable for so many people to be on benefits and housing benefit. Employers should pay higher wages. The state should not be subsidising employers. Also the note.....no money left was a rediculous attempt at humour of such a serious situation. Before the benefits cap benefits were a lifestyle choice for many. We need a firm cap on benefits. I think Kier to take cap off. Kier still does not know what a woman is.

I didn’t vote last election as literally no one I wanted to vote for, which I know is appalling, but still feel the same - if there was an election now I’d vote for anyone BUT Tory as they have made such a hash of things. Labour would struggle to be worse, even deliberate sabotage couldn’t be much worse than we have now!

AngelinaFibres · 27/09/2022 19:57

Kissingfrogs25 · 27/09/2022 19:17

Much of their supporters are violent thugs and scare me quite frankly with their hate speech and anger, I assume that is why Angela has such a leading role as their role model, and their lack of awareness that there are other views, equally as important as theirs.

Their MPs are racist, and what happened today overshadowed the conference, and was just appalling.

This.
Cannot imagine ever voting Labour again

chilliesandspices · 27/09/2022 19:57

It's hard to imagine what could be worse but I have no confidence at all in Starmer. He spent the whole of the pandemic arguing against every decision made without ever saying what he thought should be done. He just seemed to be there to boo, even when he'd been booing at the opposite decision the previous week. God only knows if there's anything going on behind those eyes.

ThreeLocusts · 27/09/2022 19:59

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 27/09/2022 18:40

I dont think Starmer inspires confidence in people, to win elections you need a leader who is a bit inspiring, even bojo managed that. But dull Starmer and gobby 'basic instinct' Raynor just dont. Its so depressing. A bit of spark please Labour!

Did you just allude to that vile tory press meme about Rayner's underwear? Why would I take your opinion seriously after that?

Summerhillsquare · 27/09/2022 19:59

waffless · 27/09/2022 19:33

Oh yeah Labour keep loosing election because people in this country are not so clever. May be talk to a Venezuelan and see why they would be worse.

Why? We're not in Venezuela, Venezula doesnt have a Labour Party, Kier Starmer isn't trying to get votes over there.

UK Labour governments down the decades have created more jobs, paid better benefits, borrowed less money, reduced hospital waiting times, increased educational attainment, increased secure housing, secured warmer relationships with neighbours and promoted arts and culture. Oh and less corruption and sex scandals. Judge them by their record.

HappyHappyHermit · 27/09/2022 19:59

I'd love a boring leader just now, someone solid, boring and steadfast is just what we need.

Exactly. When can I have "chaos with Ed Miliband" please 😆

As a Lib Dem member, I'm just here reading these comments and wishing people remembered we exist 🤣

I have voted LibDem in the past and also been a Labour Party member. You have both lost my vote (probably forever) over the failure to defend women's sex-based rights.

warofthemonstertrucks · 27/09/2022 20:03

This is my parents... all the time. When pressed for an answer it's always 'um, er, we'll Jeremy Corbyn was awful... ' which is a) irrelevant to Labour now/in the future and b) when pressed they can't say why they think Jeremy corbyn was awful either...My mum worked in the NHS for 40 years FGS. She should know better.

I've had to stop speaking to them about it. They are delusional, take everything they read in the mail as solid truth and tbh it makes me think they are a bit ridiculous.

Oh god, if only...

Miliband wouldn't have held a fucking Brexit referendum.

vera99 · 27/09/2022 20:06

nancydroo · 27/09/2022 18:44

I used to vote Labour back in the day Blair and the third way, husband still supports Labour. In recent years (post Miliband) they've been vile in the opposition. I consider them a hate party and would never vote for them again. The anti-semitism is rife. Under Corbyn they were a proxy party for the SWP who felt closer to power. The party is a disgrace now if they think they've got any chance in being power should probably reform, rebrand and rename to convince ex-Labour voters to return. I agree with the man. Labour would be worse.

Rubbish watch this and say the same things.

BirmaBrite · 27/09/2022 20:06

This particular incarnation of the Conservatives are not what most voters would think of when you say conservative. Nor what a lot in their party think of as conservative. The old saying 'believe them when they show who they are' couldn't be closer to the truth.

Could it worse under Labour ? With the country's debt now being close to 100% of GDP, after 12 years of the Conservatives being in power and with another two to go, God only knows what sort of a shitstorm they will inherit if they win.

TimeForANameChangeAgain · 27/09/2022 20:09

The Tories are shit at running a country but theY are good at two things:

  1. Enriching themselves (which is one of the reasons probably why they are so shit at running a country)
  1. Convincing people that labour is worse

That's genuinely all they are good at but it's enough to keep them in power.

nancydroo · 27/09/2022 20:09

Vera99 it's not rubbish. It's what I firmly believe to be true. Would never vote in an antisemetic party. Ever.

I don’t claim to be an expert on political parties, however if I remember right, Lib Dems and did get the majority vote some years back with the false promise of lowering student dept or something? And then David Cameron took over with the conservatives and I never heard anything from lib democrats or nick cleg again… So I don’t really see the point of voting Lib Dems anymore… As far as I’m concerned any vote for smaller parties like that is just throwing your vote away. The only votes that seem to count are conservative or labour.

News for you Starmer's wife is Jewish and his children are being brought up in the Jewish faith.

MayThe4th · 27/09/2022 20:13

There isn’t a leader among them.

And this is the issue. It doesn’t matter whether labour would be worse, the fact is there is no evidence to show that they would be any better.

And labour almost bankrupted the country last time they were in power. They took away people’s need for personal responsibility and put half the country on to benefits.

And people excuse the state they left the country in by saying that it was a global recession and labour weren’t to blame.

Yet we’re back in a global financial crisis and people are holding the tories responsible.

I didn’t vote for either of them, and I wouldn’t vote for either of them.

Starmer is a drip who has no charisma, no policies, and no leadership skills.

As for the Liberal Democrats, I have voted Lib Dem for a long time, but tbh they lost a huge amount of their vote after they went into coalition with the tories.

Goingforarun · 27/09/2022 20:13

Labour will win the next election. That’s how it goes. In cycles.
