Dh, 44…skateboarding

Is this weird?

Dh has never been into football etc, but surfs and snowboards, or at least did lots until dc came along.
Dd was playing with his old skateboard (think 20 years old) a few weeks ago and he picked it up and had a few goes and got the hang of it again.
We've since been to three skate parks since with Dd with her little scooter and Dh skateboards…is that a bit weird, is he too old?

Well I mean in theory you never too old to do anything but his body might disagree with him if he falls on his arse is he gonna be off work for six weeks with his bad back whilst you tend to his every need ?

For that reason alone I would say yes too old.

Winter99Mermaid · 25/09/2022 20:37

No I’ve seen a few around here. I roller skate with my daughter 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s fun.

littlepeas · 25/09/2022 20:38

I think that's completely fine. I still go out on roller stakes at 40.

jynnerso · 25/09/2022 20:38

No, it's incredibly cool

bunsnroses1 · 25/09/2022 20:38

Of course he’s not too old! It’s not weird at all- it’s a cool thing they can do together.

Suttonstracke · 25/09/2022 20:38

Never too old! My 70 year old mum just bought roller skates!
Go for it x

OldTinHat · 25/09/2022 20:38

Why not?! Sounds like fun, picking up an old hobby!

tickticksnooze · 25/09/2022 20:39

Sounds great.

KiraKiraHikaru · 25/09/2022 20:39

Me and my husband skate 🤷🏻‍♀️

Howdoyounotgiveup · 25/09/2022 20:40

He feels sort of the same, when he looks around and it’s teenagers 🙈he just enjoys doing it though and is good 🤷🏻‍♀️
It just seems such a young thing to do 🤣whereas surfing seems different

Of course he’s not too old! What do you feel is appropriate exercise for a 44 year old? Bowls? Shuffleboard?

Psychopomps · 25/09/2022 20:40

Who decides what is ‘too old’ for any specific activity? I think I’d be asking aren’t you too old to be asking a bunch of strangers on the internet whether your husband is allowed to resume his old hobby?

There are a couple of men of 35 or 40 who skate at the two local skate parks, and the teenagers seem to have a lot of time for them, are respectful of them etc.

Wagsandclaws · 25/09/2022 20:41

My Dh has been a skateboarder ( got quite close to professional level ) since he was 13. He's now nearly 49.

He meets up with old friends who also still skate. He's at a high level in finance and I often think when I hear him blathering on in meetings ... if only they knew 🤣

LimeCheesecake · 25/09/2022 20:42

So he was a skater 20 years ago, did he stop because he was too grown up for such things and now in his 40s he’s matured enough to realise you are never too old for such things?

let him have fun. Apart from anything else, he’s going to be strengthening his core muscles from the balancing and that’s really important for middle aged men. (Really wish I had a form of exercise I found fun, rather than it being a chore I do to keep my arse fitting in my clothes).

Howdoyounotgiveup · 25/09/2022 20:43

@Wagsandclaws 🤣
He’d love it if there were more people our age there, he’s really pissed off he didn’t do it more when younger.
It does seem a shame that we have to have these thoughts about age connected to things

@LimeCheesecake He just got more into surfing and that was his massive obsession for years until the last few years when he’s become a mard about the cold water 😂
I’d *let him do whatever he wants obviously, just wondered if it was a bit, dunno, too young a hobby 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good for him!

I'd love an excuse to go watch skaters, used to go watch my friends when I was a teenager. These days I watch on YouTube!!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 25/09/2022 20:46

Of course he's not too old!

He’s 44 not 84 😂

What is the acceptable age for skateboarding?

I have a friend in her 40s who died roller dance and a couple of friends in their late 50s who do parkour.

why would age in and of itself be a limiting factor - surely general fitness/time availability is what limits you

Testina · 25/09/2022 20:52

“It does seem a shame that we have to have these thoughts about age connected to things”

To be fair, “we” don’t have to, and most of us don’t!

Scianel · 25/09/2022 20:54

Honestly, skateboarders do tend to fall a lot and 44 year olds aren't known to be as bouncy as teens. I do think he's got scope for a nasty persistant injury there. Surfing is probably a better idea, tell him to get a good new wetsuit and get out there.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 25/09/2022 20:56

Pretty sure famous skater Tony Hawk is in his 40s

inheritanceshiteagain · 25/09/2022 20:56

Tell him to wear a helmet. I know someone's dad fell off (twice) and fractured his skull.

Sandysandwich · 25/09/2022 20:58

Its fine, if he was really into swings or monkeybars at the local park then maybe he would be a bit old.
Skateboarding is fine, Tony Hawke is in his 50s
