Dh, 44…skateboarding

Is this weird?

Dh has never been into football etc, but surfs and snowboards, or at least did lots until dc came along.
Dd was playing with his old skateboard (think 20 years old) a few weeks ago and he picked it up and had a few goes and got the hang of it again.
We've since been to three skate parks since with Dd with her little scooter and Dh skateboards…is that a bit weird, is he too old?

Oooh I'm wrong, he's 54!

Howdoyounotgiveup · 25/09/2022 20:59

@Testina I don’t normally, it’s only this as I mean connected to the image…there’s lots of teenage boys there 😬

My other half got into it during lockdown. To start with I laughed but now I don’t bat an eyelid, it’s fine. Also quite a few older skaters where I live.

Heyahun · 25/09/2022 21:02

its fine!! I’m part of a skating group (I’m 34)
im not the youngest in the group
either ! Good for him really :)

What is the acceptable age for skateboarding?

I have a friend in her 40s who died roller dance and a couple of friends in their late 50s who do parkour.

why would age in and of itself be a limiting factor - surely general fitness/time availability is what limits you

Does roller dance!

no one died!!

DarkShade · 25/09/2022 21:08

He is not too old, more power to him.

The age thing I recon is due to: injuries! Teenagers just jump back, are unafriad of injury, and anyway things like having a bust knee isn't awful. If I broke my knee it would be very terrible, I couldn't work or look after kids. With skateboarding in particular it's aslo a quirk of skateboard history. It's been out of fashion for a long while, so people in their 40s associate it with their own generation as teenagers. Now it's making a bit of a comeback, and so also associate it with the "new" teenagers.

Early 40s here. Took up skateboarding at the beginning of the year. I’m no Tony Hawk but it is so much fun and really good exercise. I go to an adult class and there are a fair few of us in our 40s!!

AdelaideRo · 25/09/2022 21:10

I live near a major skateboarding hang out. It's not uncommon to see groups of blokes (it's always blokes!) around my age there.

I'm mid 40s.

If it makes him happy it isn't really doing any harm especially as it sounds like he is including your child in his skating so not going off solo at weekends to pursue his hobby.

toastofthetown · 25/09/2022 21:10

Why would he be too old? I took up ice skating in my thirties and the only reason I didn't start earlier was that I was worried I was too old.

CollieWobble22 · 25/09/2022 21:12

I have MS and I'll keep skateboarding until I can't anymore. Don't give a hooty tooty what anyone thinks 😆

CollieWobble22 · 25/09/2022 21:12

I'm mid 30s xx

CorvusPurpureus · 25/09/2022 21:21

I would only be worried because you don't bounce back the same.

I am early 50s, joined a staff netball group a couple of years ago, & it was great fun. All ages & levels of fitness playing. We had an absolute hoot, we really did.

Then I got taken out by my (very apologetic) colleague over enthusiastically marking me, combined with my total lack of coordination, absolutely stacked it, & bust 3 ribs.

I've broken ribs before in my 20s & 30s, & can only say they don't knit up as quickly if you're older.

So yes, he should possibly go for it. But be ready for an unpleasant injury to take much longer to heal.

I ditched netball for all year cold water snorkelling. Decided I'd rather be chilly than snapping things, thank you...

Outside, fresh air, exercising, spending time with his DD, doing something he enjoys. I think it's fantastic actually.

DenholmElliot1 · 25/09/2022 21:26

Awww, leave him be, it's not harming anyone.

WonderingWanda · 25/09/2022 21:26

Lots of adults of all ages come to our local skatepark, including Dads. I think it's great if it's a hobby he loves.

winewolfhowls · 25/09/2022 21:26

Tony Hawk is a legend and a famously nice bloke so if it's good enough for him ...

Hobbies on wheels are fashionable at the moment. Life is short, join him!

@CollieWobble22 Good for you 💜Xx

Go and have some fun @Howdoyounotgiveup do anything you want. My mum went horse riding recently, first time in her 60s! 😍😘

PurplePosies · 25/09/2022 21:33

I'm 47 and skate and rollerskate - if my husband said I was too old to do either I'd be fuming with him.

nonstoprenovation · 25/09/2022 21:56

Sounds great!

We have a friend in his 50s who kite surfs, windsurfs, skateboards, BMX parks the works!!

I was chatting to some local guys whilst walking my dog the other day and they commented that a well known 91 year old man had been back at the climbing wall. Which is great because lockdown really messed things up for him, and at that age you just can't stop.

Based on that I'd say skateboarding at 44 is fine.

well known locally that was meant to say

One of the funniest clips on Top Gear is when Freddie, Paddy and Chris are in a motorhome and have a game of something at a stop over, next clip is one of them (cant remember which one) laid up with some terrible injury, being bandaged up

Moral of the story, middle aged men shouldnt mess about like school boys.

MsTSwift · 25/09/2022 22:09

Be careful - middle aged people and roller boots / skateboards are not a good combination according to my radiographer friend! Lots of broken bones…

BatshitBanshee · 25/09/2022 22:13

He's active and having fun with kiddo. I don't see a problem. The next injury might make him slow down a bit maybe 😅
