Dh, 44…skateboarding

Is this weird?

Dh has never been into football etc, but surfs and snowboards, or at least did lots until dc came along.
Dd was playing with his old skateboard (think 20 years old) a few weeks ago and he picked it up and had a few goes and got the hang of it again.
We've since been to three skate parks since with Dd with her little scooter and Dh skateboards…is that a bit weird, is he too old?

Reading what some dads do on here I'd be thankful he enjoys doing stuff with his kids.

Cece92 · 25/09/2022 22:19

Not at all! I used to skate board and roller blade a lot! Me and my daughter have started skate boarding together 😊 my balance is not as good but it's fun x

PangoPurrl · 25/09/2022 22:22

Yep my similar in age dentist DH still skates, I love watching him. Although he does have to do physio on his knee thanks to an old injury, and has a pin in his elbow thanks to a break caused by a fall a few years back!

Chillywilly93 · 25/09/2022 22:23

Tony Hawk is 54 and still skates! I think it is cool, although you could always get him a longboard instead of a skateboard. Bigger wheels and a bigger deck make it a bit more stable, and you can still do loads of tricks with them

hairypaws · 25/09/2022 22:24

My DH is 49 and still uses his skateboard and longboard. He used to go out with the dog but she's too old now to keep up.

BurnerName101 · 25/09/2022 22:30

Try the Facebook groups Middle Aged Shred and Very Old Skateboarders. But he might be a bit young for VOS (can’t remember the cutoff)

if he feels,he might get hurt skateboarding, what about longboarding? It’s a bigger, longer sexier skateboard with the emphasis in cruising round having fun (and looking insanely cool) but no tricks or ramps to fall off. He absolutely isn’t alone in rediscovering skate sports in middle age. I bloody love it.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 25/09/2022 22:32

Sounds great. How wonderful to regain enjoyment in a hobby again. Fab!

BurnerName101 · 25/09/2022 22:33

And now there is also surfskating. Should take to that really well if he’s ever surfed. I’m contemplating buying a surfskate.

Banana2079 · 25/09/2022 22:34

F me .. he’s only 44
be happy he has a hobby which keeps him active
my ex always refused to go park with me and DD

Ohhh I’ll be googling this!

Loads of adults skate , scoot and bmx at our local skatepark.
It's massive amongst my age group, they did it from childhood and are still into it now, twenty thirty forty years later.
no different from playing five a side or going strava crazy on a bicycle.

we don't all just grow up and lose interest in the things that gave us pleasure in our youth.

I think it's very cool to have those skills, I hang out at the skatepark all the time as my kids are too young to go that far without me.
I take a book, listen to the cool tunes from the skatepark and love watching some of the skills as well as seeing my kids flourish and grow in confidence and skils.
Skatepark is such a respectful and inclusive place, everyone looks out for each other, i love it, skills for life.

@Zedcarz What area are you from? Cornwall?

CollieWobble22 · 26/09/2022 06:55

I surf skate 😁

I also surf

girlmom21 · 26/09/2022 06:58

He enjoys doing it - he should carry on doing it!

CollieWobble22 · 26/09/2022 06:59

Is anyone here from the South West? I feel like I found my people x

Well I mean in theory you never too old to do anything but his body might disagree with him if he falls on his arse is he gonna be off work for six weeks with his bad back whilst you tend to his every need ?

For that reason alone I would say yes too old.

He’s only 44, not 94!

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/09/2022 07:12

I'm 53 and love skating. Spend a lot of time at skate parks with my 11 yo🤷🏻‍♀️

mountainsunsets · 26/09/2022 07:28

Goodness me, the way some people are responding, you'd think he was in his eighties!

It's absolutely fine. You can injure yourself doing anything at any age - it shouldn't be a reason not to do a hobby that you love.

Herejustforthisone · 26/09/2022 07:32

I surf and skate. I’m not quite as old as your husband but I’m a woman in my thirties. I’m also a successful professional. It doesn’t even occur to me to think I’m too old. The whole lifestyle attached to both those board sports is very free and open and welcoming, so I’m guessing you don’t partake yourself, OP.

Snog · 26/09/2022 07:34

I'm in my 50s and went back to skateboarding again in lockdown after 30 years. I've also re-started ice skating.

It's surely good to have active hobbies that you enjoy?

Weepingwillows12 · 26/09/2022 07:35

I think it's fine if he's ok at it. My DH "skateboarded" when I met him as a teenager which appeared to mean skate to a park. Try some grinds on a pavement. Give up and sit and drink cans in the park with your mates 🤣. I think he's too old for that now as he finds it hard to sit on the grass for long

Noviembre · 26/09/2022 07:35

"Too old to..." is a phrase used by boring people. I started skateboarding lessons at 38 and there were lots of older people there, very skilled, and getting back into it. I would never not so something because dull people deem one 'too old'.' They're usually the types who do nothing at all.

Fcuk38 · 26/09/2022 07:36

The oldest Bmx er is in his 70s, so you have a fair way yet until you can put your foot down with your husband and stop him doing something he enjoys.

SpaceyCake · 26/09/2022 07:47

Of course he's not too old. No one is too old to skate. 😃 Skating is such a great hobby. Keeps you fit, you make friends and the skating community is brill. I would love it if DS ended up being a skater when he's older. It would keep him out of trouble. 😂 Let him get on with it and have a go yourself. 😊

I'm approaching 40 and I still scoot everywhere. DH asked me if I'm getting too old for it but I don't give a shit. It's great fun and keeps me active (it's also great for my old lady knees).
