Dh, 44…skateboarding

Howdoyounotgiveup · 25/09/2022 20:36

Is this weird?

Dh has never been into football etc, but surfs and snowboards, or at least did lots until dc came along.
Dd was playing with his old skateboard (think 20 years old) a few weeks ago and he picked it up and had a few goes and got the hang of it again.
We've since been to three skate parks since with Dd with her little scooter and Dh skateboards…is that a bit weird, is he too old?

Ah! Your daughter is the one with the fun dad who plays with her.

As long as he's having fun.

Try the Facebook groups Middle Aged Shred and Very Old Skateboarders. But he might be a bit young for VOS (can’t remember the cutoff)

if he feels,he might get hurt skateboarding, what about longboarding? It’s a bigger, longer sexier skateboard with the emphasis in cruising round having fun (and looking insanely cool) but no tricks or ramps to fall off. He absolutely isn’t alone in rediscovering skate sports in middle age. I bloody love it.

DP is 50 and in that group. He's been skating (and BMXing) since he was a teenager and goes to the regular meet ups and also skates/rides locally a few times a month. It's totally normal and he has a lot of similarly aged mates who do it too.

My dp is 53 and always takes his skateboard to the park with the kids and their scooters. He's actually really good at it (and not showing off) and I think he looks really cool! One of the many reasons I like him so much, young at heart and fun :) He did have a big crash once and had a bad hip for weeks - that's my only concern!

tulips27 · 26/09/2022 08:14

It's cool, lucky you to have such a fun husband.

Charley50 · 26/09/2022 08:26

DP is 56 and has an electric skateboard, hasn't forgotten skills learnt in his teens at all. Just flies along.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 26/09/2022 08:54

As long as he doesn't do what my middle-aged friend did and break a leg trying to do a half-pipe Confused

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/09/2022 09:03

To add to my previous post, there are quite a few much older but very skilled skateboarders at our local skatepark. It's a hobby and it keeps you fit!

Be careful - middle aged people and roller boots / skateboards are not a good combination according to my radiographer friend! Lots of broken bones…

But he only sees the ones who have got injured, so it's not really a representative sample

You can say that about many activities.

How many people does she see due to playing football, climbing, horse riding etc?

TheClogLady · 26/09/2022 09:19

I’m the same age and grew up in the skateboard community and loads of my friends went on to work in the industry/own their own skate companies etc.

This means I have an inordinately large number of 40+ skaters in my social circle.

it’s all fun until you get an injury - we really aren’t as rubbery as we were as teens and a shattered wrist is a big problem when you have work/family commitments!

Tell him to investigate income protection insurance, just in case 😉

Well don't worry I'm also a radiographer and the majority of patients we see with sports fractures/injuries are from football, horse riding or trampoline accidents. And people 'falling over' onto suspicious objects. I've seen one skateboarding injury in 14 years.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/09/2022 09:33

And people 'falling over' onto suspicious objects

Ha ha. I remember some years ago there was an email going round of the best of these. I'm in a sort of related industry and a colleague was on a radiography email group and he shared one around, for professional interest of course (all anonimised, before the professionally offended wade in).

My Dad's in his 60's and still skateboards and kite surfs. I'm not going to lie, it was cringey as hell as a teenager when I was out with my mates and he went past on his stakeboard, but I was a teenager, there was always going to be something that embarrassed me about him.

And hell, most of the most famous stakeboarders in the world are now in their 50s and are still at it and learning new stuff - e.g.

10HailMarys · 26/09/2022 09:54

Not weird at all. It's no different from, say, playing 5-aside football every week or going mountain-biking or whatever. It's just a fun sport/activity. I definitely know at least two men in their 30s/40s who skate.

itsaich · 26/09/2022 10:05

What's wrong with being weird?

He sounds fun. "too old" -nonsense.

Giggorata · 26/09/2022 10:13

My son has been a skater since around 13 years old and like another poster's son above, got near to professional levels. He is now in his late forties.
He still skates occasionally, as do loads of his old skater mates, some wearing protective clothing nowadays.

He has recently bought a motorised skateboard, and parks up, then uses it to get around the City.

garlictwist · 26/09/2022 10:19

I walk past our local skatepark on the way to work and there is always an older guy there every morning around 630 skateboarding. He's pretty good. Guess he likes to have the place to himself before the kids arrive! I think it's a good hobby, it's good to practice a skill and he's not too old.

massistar · 26/09/2022 10:33

Never too old ! I snowboard and DH at 50 still surfs and snowboards so I wouldn't bat an eye if he took up skateboarding. My DS who is also big into surfing uses a surf skate which mimics surfing stance and actions more than a traditional skateboard. It's not for doing tricks or jumps, might be an option?

OH used to say he wasn't doing his job right as a dad unless the girls were suitably embarrassed.

You aren’t ever too old to have another crack at a sport you love, I recently did a 1 day course on riding big jumps and drops in a MTB skills park. I’ve been MTB—ing since the 90s. On and off, kids, location and budget permitting.

i genuinely thought I was going to be the only tragic old fart at 50. nope. Barring one 12yo.who,was there with her dad I was the bloody youngest. It was fabulous. And great fun.

the oldest participant was a 68 yo who admitted he was doing it to annoy his wife, because she’d said he was too old to go.

DrFoxtrot · 26/09/2022 23:09

My DP is 51 and he regularly rides and does tricks on his BMX 😍 I absolutely love watching him. Not too old at all.
