I know I aibu to post here but I’ve accidentally fed my myself and my child undercooked chicken, oven wasn’t up as high as I thought and chips were done so I thought ok. Definitely raw. Am so anxious.

likelihood of illness? What do I do? Is there anything that can be done? Google says don’t make yourself sick.

The hospital had to report this, its some rule with Campylobacter, and we got a couple of phone calls from environmental health.....had we been to any petting farm type places etc. It was obvious to us he had got it from a pub where we had lunch one day, as we were house hunting that week and apart from that he'd eaten very very safe food like weetabix with milk and pasta with tomato sauce. Weirdly, even though the Environmental health people were trying to find the source, they kept insisiting it wouldn't be from a pub, and we must have forgotten about other possible sources Hmm
He was totally fine in a week and has never had another convulsion.

Lol at them thinking he couldn't have got it from a pub @RelentlessForwardProgress . That's precisely where I and 3 others got if from some years ago!

When the test results came back confirming campylobacter, I had to fill in a form detailing anywhere I'd eaten or bought a takeaway from. A couple of weeks later, I got a call from the relevant council saying that there'd been 4 other cases of campylobacter in people who'd eaten there, they'd been and visited and found several breaches of food safety rules and would I be willing to make a statement if they were minded to prosecute. They never came back to me, so I guess they didn't prosecute, which is bad imo.

My symptoms started 2.5 days after eating there, so pretty quickly. I don't think I've ever felt so ill.

bellaboo90 · 25/09/2022 18:42

Firstly, don’t beat yourself up. You’d never purposely do this. Accidents happen. You won’t be the only person to have done this!

Personally I’d call 111. Explain and ask for some advice on what to look out for in terms of sickness, and whether there is anything you should do etc. Probably better to speak to the NHS rather than us! :)

LilacPoppy · 25/09/2022 18:44

They are pre cooked it wasn't raw chicken.

Depends. Some of them say RAW CHICKEN on them.

And how old is your child?

food poisoning from “raw” chicken is dangerous and bloody awful. If not a hint within 4 hours, you can relax quite a bit. Fully relax after 12 hours.

Yep, I got campylobacter from a small piece of raw chicken at an undisclosed Mexican chain restaurant. Was ill for about a month and had to have antibiotics. Was horrific. 4-12 hours is a bit optimistic though, mine was about 24 hours after.

ChildsFan · 25/09/2022 18:46

It would have already been cooked if it was a pre made breaded product?

CulturePigeon · 25/09/2022 18:47

Hope all will be well, OP. Try and distract yourself for now.

Not much help but I've always found food poisoning takes me completely by surprise. Whenever I've thought I'd definitely get it, I was fine, whether being served food by people whose hygiene I didn't trust or making a silly mistake myself. It always came out of the blue, not where you'd expect.

Unanananana · 25/09/2022 16:56

I don't get how you chopped it up but didn't realise it was raw then? Did you have your eyes shut while using the knife?

Rude.

bakehimawaytoys · 25/09/2022 18:51

I've done this before OP. It's really easy to do. I ate a bit of breaded chicken thinking it was pre cooked. I'm afraid I did make myself vomit and suffered no further ill effects. I hope you're all ok!

BlueKaftan · 25/09/2022 18:55

This happened to me and I genuinely didn’t know it was raw. I only ate half of 6 chicken strips but was very ill 36 hours later. The only thing that made me feel better was dioralyte. The stomach cramps were bad but didn’t last more than a couple of hours. Get yourself hydrated and take dioralyte if you are sick.

bellaboo90 · 25/09/2022 18:58

Tell me, what’s it like having never made a mistake or eaten anything processed before? Truly a role model to us all.

MelodyPondsMum · 25/09/2022 19:27

Odd - this is the second thread in a week about a parent feeding a DC undercooked/bad/raw chicken. Who knew MN was full of people who can't cook chicken and are so hungry they don't notice when it's bad or raw. Hmm
Even tomato ketchup doesn't hide the taste of raw chicken so your chicken must have been fine.

But fair

ChickenBurgers · 25/09/2022 19:31

My nan accidentally gave me uncooked chicken goujons. She had brought me some and I insisted they didn’t need cooking, she wasn’t convinced but took my word for it (I was 16/17). She served them. I ate about 5, she ate other things on her plate before having one. She instantly said “chicken that’s raw!!! They taste awful how did they not taste awful to you?!”, then promptly burst into tears about the fact she might of given me food poisoning despite me repeatedly saying I’d told her they didn’t need cooking and it was my fault, she sobbed that she should of checked the packet. It was worse as I’d been diagnosed with crohns at 15 so that made her worry more that I’d be more ill with food poisoning than most people.

Long story short I was literally fine. Try not to panic, it’s done now. If he does show symptoms of food poisoning then seek medical advice given his age. Accidents happen, lesson learned. I always stick a knife into food like this for 5 seconds and check it comes out hot to make sure they’re done as a tip for the future.

Are they drinking that dodgy tap water with it?

Annoyingkidsmusic · 25/09/2022 19:37

OhNoOhDearOh · 25/09/2022 15:28

Yes a chicken nugget thing. Processed shit that I’ll never eat again, I am scarred for life.

They cook fairly quickly tbh. I’d say you’re likely to be fine….

Witchofthedales · 25/09/2022 20:00

SpeckofDustUponMySoul · 25/09/2022 15:46

How would we know whether you'll be fine?
Maybe a point of learning is to pay more attention to what you are feeding your 4 year old child and to stop shovelling crap into your mouth?
🤷

Do you feel better for that you nasty sod?

Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/09/2022 20:40

Aren't the Birds Eye ones packs already pre cooked and frozen so you're essentially just heating them up rather than cooking the chicken??!

I thought that they would be pre cooked too, I've just looked at the cooking instructions and they are raw meat.

Sorry…
Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/09/2022 23:31

@HairyKnobsAndBroomsticks oh!! I honestly thought all the frozen boxes of stuff in the supermarkets was pre cooked as it were and you just heated it through.

OP - fingers crossed you're both ok tonight and not feeling poorly.x

User34352515 · 26/09/2022 07:16

Any updates OP?

HairyKnobsAndBroomsticks · 26/09/2022 13:14

I was just wondering how you are today.? Sorry that some posters were nasty yesterday. 💐

30hoursfreechildcare · 26/09/2022 13:14

I'm wondering how you are too OP? Hope your both ok.

Nannygoat151 · 26/09/2022 17:48

That’s what I thought. Why eat it ???

Mere1 · 26/09/2022 18:15

It depends. My husband got campylobacter from undercooked chicken. It takes up to 11 days to develop. No vomiting but diarrhoea. He lost 2 stones and was ill for weeks. Health authority involved. Hotel fined.
