I know I aibu to post here but I’ve accidentally fed my myself and my child undercooked chicken, oven wasn’t up as high as I thought and chips were done so I thought ok. Definitely raw. Am so anxious.

likelihood of illness? What do I do? Is there anything that can be done? Google says don’t make yourself sick.

How would we know whether you'll be fine?
Maybe a point of learning is to pay more attention to what you are feeding your 4 year old child and to stop shovelling crap into your mouth?
🤷

Fucking hell 🤦‍♀️ There was really no need for that.

sponsabillaries · 25/09/2022 15:57

Please don’t panic. If either of you are going
to be unwell it will happen quite quickly. The overwhelming likelihood is that you will be fine 😊

AbsoluteTruths · 25/09/2022 15:57

Those chicken things are usually quite thin aren't they? So if the oven was high enough to cook the chips, it's likely the chicken wasn't fully raw, assuming they went in at the same time. Maybe the colour inside was some of the spice coating from the knife cutting through?

Maytodecember · 25/09/2022 16:00

What’s done is done.
Bin the rest of the food, bleach any surfaces it touched, put dishes in boiling soapy water ( might as well avoid spreading anything that might have been in the chicken)
Drink plenty of water.
If you feel hungry eat just toast.
Wash yours and your dc hands thoroughly after each loo visit, obvs.
Bleach the loo each time.
You both might be perfectly ok, you may be one sick. If you do become unwell, violently sick, temperature, several bouts of diarrhoea call 111 or GP and say what you ate as this will speed any treatment given.
Consider becoming vegetarian.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

RelentlessForwardProgress · 25/09/2022 16:01

I think its probably OK if it was a processed meat type product. However, my DS got Campylobacter from undercooked chicken when he was 3 so I can give you a heads up on what to look for.

He had a very high temperature one night, and had a febrile convulsion. He was examined at a and e and once they found his temperature could be kept in check with paracetamol they sent him home (a and e did a higher dose of paracetamol than we could give at home, as they do it by weight not just child's age.

Then about 8 hours later the next morning he started with bloody, watery diahorrea and stomach cramps. Back into hospital and when they saw the bloody diahorrea they decided to admit him for fluids etc. I can't seem to recall that they gave him any treatment except paracetamol and fluids. Released after 2 nights, they let me stay in with him. They had taken various bloods and stool samples but we didn't find out it was Campylobacter until after he'd been discharged from hospital again.

The hospital had to report this, its some rule with Campylobacter, and we got a couple of phone calls from environmental health.....had we been to any petting farm type places etc. It was obvious to us he had got it from a pub where we had lunch one day, as we were house hunting that week and apart from that he'd eaten very very safe food like weetabix with milk and pasta with tomato sauce. Weirdly, even though the Environmental health people were trying to find the source, they kept insisiting it wouldn't be from a pub, and we must have forgotten about other possible sources Hmm
He was totally fine in a week and has never had another convulsion.

pleasecanthisnothappenagain · 25/09/2022 16:02

OP. You will be fine. Please do not worry. Don’t make a habit of it, but you’ll be fine.

do you have emetophobia by any chance?

BoredOfGrey22 · 25/09/2022 16:02

If it was a southern fried chicken breast in breadcrumbs... was it actually unprocessed raw chicken, or was it one of the processed chicken breasts that are a bit 'mushy'. Sorry I can't think of another way to describe it. I mean like a chicken nugget... that's processed chicken and not raw uncooked chicken pieces.

If it's the latter then there's probably no issue.

If it was a 100% chicken fillet that was raw then slightly more chance of being poorly, but if it wasn't contaminated with anything else then again chances are still quite slim. You said it went in the oven so bacteria etc would be at least partly destroyed.

Salmonella poisoning etc is more likely to come from cross contamination... ie you cook a jacket potato and then serve it on the plate a raw chicken had been defrosted on.

Hang in there. Distract yourself and hope for the best! Honest mistake

Scianel · 25/09/2022 16:03

Once when I felt something dodgy starting from a bad takeaway I had a couple of shots of stroh rum 80 proof and that stopped it in it's tracks. I appreciate that is a less than ideal home treatment for a small child though.

LDN1 · 25/09/2022 16:05

Another example of the fact 'we' are not designed / evolved to eat meat. No other creature on earth needs something to be cooked through before chow down. Avoid meat in future and rest easy.

Herejustforthisone · 25/09/2022 16:06

If you were going to be sick, you would have been by now.

This is why nutrition and food hygiene needs to be taught in schools, people don’t know anything.

BertieBotts · 25/09/2022 16:07

I've done this loads of times (accidentally) and never got ill. It's not true that you're "highly likely" to get ill. It's just more likely than it is with other food products but it's not a given. Most people will be absolutely fine. Even if there was some bacteria in the chicken, which isn't guaranteed, it would have to get past your stomach acid and immune system to actually make you poorly. It would likely have been a small amount if any was there because the product was frozen and bacteria can't reproduce at freezing temperature. It was only in the danger zone for what, 20-30 minutes? Presumably you put it straight from the freezer into the oven.

It CAN happen and you should avoid eating undercooked chicken, be careful about contamination with raw meat etc, but if you've accidentally eaten it one time and don't make a habit of it, then the chances are you will be absolutely fine, don't worry about it.

Noln · 25/09/2022 16:07

My brother once ate a whole fully uncooked breaded chicken breast in a wrap. He assumed it was cooked. He didn't get ill.

I had campylobacter poisoning a few years ago and just had terrible runs for a few days. My father in law also had it and he was much worse as he's in his 80s, which is how I know what it was as they tested his stool and we'd eaten the same thing at a restaurant. But he wasn't hospitalised or anything.

Worst case you'll get a touch of food poisoning, but you'll be OK.

MindPalace · 25/09/2022 16:09

OP, Dw it should be fine and if not, it will be a bit unpleasant, but still ok.

I can’t for the life of me think why people think this is a good time to lecture a mother worried about her child about the virtues of veganism.

Good luck OP. X

Not really. It's not so dangerous to eat raw meat that it would wipe out vast numbers of people. This is where we have lost all sense of perspective, just because something is well known to be risky, doesn't mean that it's a 90% risk.

catfunk · 25/09/2022 16:11

They're already partially/ fully cooked and you're jay defrosting and reheating them really to eat. Doubt it was as raw as you think, sure you'll be fine .

Why don’t you go and eat a handful of raw kidney beans and then come back to tell us how you got on?

Can you take your vegan misinformation propaganda away from a thread about a worried mum's food poisoning fears? It's not in dispute that humans evolved on an omnivorous diet. The existence of foodborne pathogens exacerbated by factory farming methods doesn't disprove this. OP can make her own decisions about her and her child's diet at a time to suit her, without you trying to take advantage at a vulnerable time.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/09/2022 16:14

I think there’s a pretty good chance you won’t get ill.

My OH (who is very cavalier about food safety) has done this sort of thing numerous times and never had food poisoning.

I wouldn’t recommend it but I also think the chances are you will be fine.

You forgot to mention to put on a Hazmat suit first 😂

Seriously though op, please try not to worry. I'm hopeful that you will be totally fine.

TitsInAbsentia · 25/09/2022 16:26

What time did you eat it? If it's going to cause you problems it would probably happen within about 4 hours of you eating it (possibly sooner!). Hoping it doesn't cause too much of an issue!

Pen89ox · 25/09/2022 16:27

When I ate dodgy chicken I was ill within the hour. It was absolutely grim I’m not going to lie, but nothing serious as such just felt pretty awful, just get a lot of plain things into eat and hope for the best.

I’ve been vegetarian since!
