I know I aibu to post here but I’ve accidentally fed my myself and my child undercooked chicken, oven wasn’t up as high as I thought and chips were done so I thought ok. Definitely raw. Am so anxious.

likelihood of illness? What do I do? Is there anything that can be done? Google says don’t make yourself sick.

I reckon it was already cooked! All bought chicken nuggets are pre cooked. You'll be totally fine x

properdoughnut · 25/09/2022 16:29

Fingers crossed. Make sure you're washing your hands thoroughly after the poos

iloveburmese3 · 25/09/2022 16:31

Also - you only get sick from raw chicken if there is a bad bacteria in the chicken.. which is rare. Not all rare chicken has this so don't stress

Another example of the fact 'we' are not designed / evolved to eat meat. No other creature on earth needs something to be cooked through before chow down. Avoid meat in future and rest easy.

😂Official advice is not even to feed cats raw meat, because it might give them food poisoning.

SpinCityBlue · 25/09/2022 16:39

I accidentally ate half a large caterpillar concealed in a Brussels sprout this weekend. Horrendous.

I salute you, @Birdy1066

Was the remaining half still moving? I suppose it depends which half you ate. Makes you think about nature and food, though, doesn't it? I grow things in the garden and yeah, got stories.

Once when I felt something dodgy starting from a bad takeaway I had a couple of shots of stroh rum 80 proof and that stopped it in it's tracks. I appreciate that is a less than ideal home treatment for a small child though.

I dunno, it might be on the NHS 'self care' website soon.

Onlinetherapist · 25/09/2022 16:52

I’m more horrified by the unkind posts than the fact you’ve eaten raw chicken! Unkind posters, do you not worry that you could push an anxious person over the edge? Something to consider before your next vitriol perhaps? Hopefully all will be well OP. If not, your body will no doubt do what it needs to do to keep you safe, ie expel it one way or another. Unpleasant but usually short lived xx

Unanananana · 25/09/2022 16:56

I don't get how you chopped it up but didn't realise it was raw then? Did you have your eyes shut while using the knife?

ouch321 · 25/09/2022 17:07

Chillax, I've eaten chicken that was going a bit green before and was fine.
Just be sure you've enough loo roll and handwash just in case. Fretting about it won't help either way.

girlmom21 · 25/09/2022 17:12

Birdseye processed chicken things aren't sold completely raw so if it was pink it's more likely to have just been a shit piece of chicken rather than raw chicken.

garlictwist · 25/09/2022 17:13

I got very ill from chicken when I was a child on holiday in Corfu. I knew it tasted bad but ate it anyway because we were in a restaurant. I fell ill only a few hours later.

I wonder if these vile posters feel free to spew their nastiness because they can simply change their user name and avoid establishing a “reputation” as a nasty piece of work!

Another example of the fact 'we' are not designed / evolved to eat meat. No other creature on earth needs something to be cooked through before chow down. Avoid meat in future and rest easy.

We didn't evolve to eat huge amount of salonella and camphylobacter and pathogens courtesy of factory farming.

It's interesting, isn't it? Meat, and the amino acids we get from bone marrow in particular, we very much did evolve to eat in terms of brain size development at a critical stage of hominid evolution. As hominids, 'we' ate it all raw. Fish, turtles, crocodiles, mammals - even the odd elephant has been found from hominid 'kill / eat' sites, from 1 - 2 million years ago.

Humans didn't invent fire till maybe 300 - 400,000 years ago, maybe more recently, but then we did cook meat - and then seem to have been another explosion in human development at around 250,000 years ago.

Yes the hominid and early human diet was very much plant-based but it was omniverous; there's no getting round that really. But I do understand people cutting down on certain types of meat these days because of the methods of production.

nopuppiesallowed · 25/09/2022 17:37

Don't beat yourself up about this, OP. We all make mistakes (some much worse than this) and you won't make this particular one again! If you have any acidophilis (spelling?) capsules they might help. They contain lots of gut friendly bacteria. If not, might be worth trying live yoghurt. Hope that you have no bad effects🙏

ShootingForTheMoonLandingOnMyArse · 25/09/2022 17:43

DS (ASD) once ate fresh raw chicken (bought that morning) as a dare in Food Tech. His teacher rang me very concerned. He was fine with no ill effects at all.

You will have heated the chicken in the oven (albeit not cooked) and bacteria would have started multiplying but I’m sure you’ll both be fine. Frozen chicken will be ‘fresher’ than if it’s been transported and sitting on supermarket shelf for a few days. Just keep yourselves hydrated and watch and see.

cherrysthename · 25/09/2022 17:49

What's with all the chicken threads on here lately?

Lovemusic33 · 25/09/2022 17:50

My dd ate raw sausage and ended up very unwell (just one end but lasted for weeks) she now has a lactose intolerance 😬

I had salmonella a year ago and was pretty unwell but was not sick (just the other end) and ended up in A&E. I am a emetophobe so I’m usually super careful about cooking things.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/09/2022 17:50

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 25/09/2022 15:33

Most of the ‘processed shit’ are already half cooked. You’ll probably be fine

This. Its almost just heating it up. I doubt it was completely raw.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/09/2022 17:51

Dh’s friend eats the stuff raw on purpose. I explained to him that just because steak tartare is a thing, raw chicken isn’t. He seemed surprised. Iron stomach. Dd also ate undercooked nuggets (cold inside) at a friend’s house when she was about 10. The family were having Indian food, which she wouldn’t have eaten as it was too spicy and so the girl’s mum gave her nuggets. She was too polite to say they were practically uncooked. She was fine.

VerbenaGirl · 25/09/2022 17:53

I accidentally ate some undercooked chicken made by my teen a few months ago. It was homemade panko crumbed chicken pieces and most were cooked, which lulled me into a false sense of security - bit into another and and swallowed it before looking at the other half and discovering the rawness, because I think it had been at the cool edge of the pan. I felt sure I’d get Ill, but didn’t. I read up on what to do and found a few suggestions of alcohol - so I did have a couple of glasses of wine. Obviously no good for your child though. It’s not a foregone conclusion that you will get sick from raw chicken, just that it can (because of farming methods I believe) include some nasty bacteria that would make you unwell. So it is an ‘if’ not a ‘when’, but the when can vary as there are a few different bacteria. It’s a hard memory to shake though.

I don't get how you chopped it up but didn't realise it was raw then? Did you have your eyes shut while using the knife?

While your comment is very helpful, OP has already said there was ketchup or alternatively, she may have cut it quickly whilst not looking at the inside

Creameggs223 · 25/09/2022 18:05

I son done a chicken burger yesterday and it wasn't cooked he ate half before he realised so far so good he's been fine.

Luckymummytoone · 25/09/2022 18:10

I’ve not read the whole thread but I’m pretty sure they’re not raw to start with? Aren’t they precooked then frozen? I think some of them do have a pink tinge sometimes x hopefully you’ll all be ok x

Ihatecocomelon · 25/09/2022 18:19

Crikey op you are getting a right bollocking. To those posters criticising, I hope you're perfect and never made a mistake in your life.

Hopefully you and ds are OK
