This poor girl.

I've got three DDs I can't imagine how I'd be if this had happened to one of them.

Primark staff were helpful but say it's happened previously.

No shit, predators are of course going to prey on easy access semi clothed women.

We need to rise and revolt.

No, I don’t do any of those things. But I don’t agree that single sex spaces stop every single sexual predator, because they don’t.

Nothing stops every single sexual predator, don't be ridiculous. But there are safeguards that will dramatically reduce the number.

Is this the "women get raped anyway so who cares if they get raped more" thing?

Keyansier · 25/09/2022 18:39

Pumperthepumper · 25/09/2022 18:38

I disagree. It’s very easy to walk into an unstaffed changing room regardless of the sign above the door.

Who said anything about unstaffed? You're just making things up and moving goalposts now.

No I’m not - I said upthread that security in changing rooms (as well as individual, lockable cubicles) would work much better than single sex.

And you still haven't explained why we can't have these cubicles in three sections: male and female for those who require it, and gender neutral for those who prefer that.

That’s incredibly offensive. No, it’s more of a ‘stop putting a sticking plaster over a gaping wound’ thing.

I have absolutely no idea why we can’t have that. Why can’t we?

And I'm Captain Kirk. Stop being an arse.

How am I being an arse? That is simply what self ID does.

I didn't say I agree with it, it's just some posters on here might not realise that a trans woman is any man who says he is a woman. They may think it is limited to men with gender dysphoria.

It's immensely offensive, yes, but it's exactly what you're implying and where you're going by pulling the "well we can't ever completely stop all sexual predators" stuff to justify erasing female spaces.

Why can't we have male, female and gender neutral spaces?

No, that’s the exact opposite of what I said. We could stop predatory behaviour, but it won’t be stopped by single sex spaces.

I don’t know why you keep asking me that. I have absolutely no idea why we can’t have male, female and gender neutral spaces. What do you want me to say?

You can say what you want about what you think would work, the rest of us are talking about the situation as it happened and the situation as it currently stands.

Anyway, you've already shown yourself to people in this thread by saying that you wouldn't leave your front door unlocked and wide open, you wouldn't leave your car unlocked with the keys inside and that you wouldn't let a child walk home unsupervised. It's plain to anyone reading that you're unable (or unwilling, for whatever reason) to put the same logic to the topic at hand.

Well it won't stop every single sexual predator ever.

I'm happy for it to happen, though.

So if you agree with having a space exclusively for female born people, and the only thing you'd change is making the cubicles lockable and floor to ceiling, what exactly are you arguing about?

But the same logic is ‘making spaces safer’, which is exactly what I’m arguing for.

We need to vote with our feet and stop buying from shops endorsing this.

I’m all for inclusion and genuine trans people using the changing room they feel appropriate to them.

But random men roaming around a room where undressed women are only separated by a curtain is a disgrace.

This. I don’t shop in clothing shops where there is no single sex changing room.

Until women stop paying the shops, the shops will carry on doing what the men want.

If women stop giving places like Primark money, things will change.

I think I’ve been pretty clear about what I’m arguing about - that there’s a conversation to be had about trans issues, but this isn’t it. This is predatory behaviour, and it won’t be solved by simply making all spaces single sex.

I hope this post makes sense, as I'm aware I used the words "more" and "less"...

I should have said, floor to ceiling cubicles.

These are prohibitively expensive. As I said earlier, the ones introduced at M&S don’t work because they often don’t lock, plus the accessible ones have curtain. This is without mentioning the hidden camera issue.

How come multiple posters don't have a clue what you're talking about then?

mydudero · 25/09/2022 18:52

In all my years of using single sex changing rooms in any shop, I have never had another female walk in on me by mistake nor on purpose. Yet this poor girl has a male walk in on her twice in one use of a unisex changing room. I'd have been shaking whether I was fully clothed or not.

Poor girl, and shame on Primark!!

I think I’ve been pretty clear about what I’m arguing about - that there’s a conversation to be had about trans issues, but this isn’t it. This is predatory behaviour, and it won’t be solved by simply making all spaces single sex.

You're the only person on this entire debate who has even suggested it might ever be possible to erase sex attacks entirely. If you know how to do that, do tell us. We've all been waiting for you for a long time.

In the meantime, if your true purpose is merely to call for more secure cubicles within male, female and gender neutral spaces then no, I can't see what you're arguing about. Unless what you're actually doing is attempting to invalidate this discussion ("not the conversation to be had") because it reinforces the need for exclusively female spaces and you don't want people to be reminded of that.

It isn’t possible to support single sex changing rooms and support transwomen using the changing room of their choice. Once a transwoman accesses a female changing room, they cease to be single sex. Once they cease to be single sex, they are unisex and anyone can access them. I don’t think any major retailers offer single sex changing rooms anymore.

No, at no point did I suggest anything like that. I made one suggestion and was immediately jumped on, because my solution didnt solve the camera issue.

I’m arguing for safer spaces for women. I disagree that that means ‘single sex is the only way to do that’.

But you agree that they should remain? And should simply be made even more secure?

I don't think that swimming is the only way to stay fit, but I wouldn't go on and on and on and on about it if I didn’t have a problem with the existence of swimming pools.

I agree they should remain - I think single sex plus a neutral third space is the best option for everyone.

But I don’t agree that this a good justification for that argument.
