To ask you to think twice about eating chicken regularly

Tigofigo · 25/09/2022 09:03

...it's just not sustainable for us to consume as much as we do.

Intensive chicken farming is polluting and destroying our rivers and also potentially causing breathing difficulties and lung issues in those who live near farms spraying chicken / other animal manure as fertilizer.

Really worrying too, at a time when govt are ripping up EU regs on environmental laws that will further destroy our rivers and the animals, plants and people that rely on them (along with the shit already pumped into them...).

It’s fine to talk about the planet or animal welfare. If people don’t want to read or engage, they can choose not to.

urghhhhh

why are you so goady??

p.s I’d love it if one of your grandkids turned out to be a staunch veggie/vegan as they hit their teens. And you would have to buy in that quorn mince - shock, horror!

I keep seeing this and reading, "To ask you to think twice about eating children regularly"...

Liz1tummypain · 03/10/2022 20:40

Yes and when I saw the way they throw live male.chicks into a machine that grinds them up. When I saw that I sort of lost hope for.people who work in this business. Callous doesn't cover it

It may surprise you to know that one of my children is vegan. As are some of my friends. It may also surprise you to know that I myself was vegan at one point in my life. I'm very good at cooking vegan meals, although that nasty Quorn shit is neither vegan or pleasant.

The difference between my friends / my daughter, and some of the people on this thread, is they're not preachy and demanding. They accept that people make choices for themselves, just like they have. People who want to be vegan will go and seek out information and maybe even ask for it. Just like I did once. But for people who do eat meat, who are happy with their choices, your approach is never going to work. They've already made up their minds. They know how meat is produced and they accept that. They don't want to change. However much you go on and on and on and on....

StarsQuitShining · 03/10/2022 21:35

Actually I’ve encountered plenty of meat eaters that aren’t aware of farming practices. I do animal welfare campaign work which sometimes involves approaching the public. Lots of them are shocked to find out things like free range chickens are not what they think they are, about the killing of male chicks, even that cows are artificially inseminated, the very basics. And we’ve had many people that go vegan and now campaign with us or just people that approach us and say they’re cutting down due to becoming aware from our previous chats. They were not seeking it out, they didn’t know there was anything to seek out. If they don’t want to talk to us, we leave them be. If people don’t want to read this thread, they don’t have to. People shouldn’t be silenced for talking about animal welfare or the planet.

DuckBilledFattypus · 03/10/2022 21:43

Oh well, I'm sure they're delighted that they have you to educate them then. There's not many of them on this thread mind you, but I'm sure your message is getting through:-)

I disagree. Most people don’t seek stuff out. They learn about it because of people who are aware raising awareness. I wouldn’t have known way back unless I had read something about it and I wouldn’t know a lot of stuff now if it wasn’t because of activists etc.

Some people use new knowledge to change their habits and many deny it and kid themselves and some don’t care regardless.

What I don’t understand is why people are so opposed to people talking about this, unless it is because it makes them uncomfortable? Being vegetarian/vegan does no harm, on the contrary, so why are people so against it? And why do they care if people talk about it?

procrastinatingtree · 04/10/2022 07:02

Because they know they can't win any moral argument about it. It's just not possible.

This thread isn't just "talking about it". This thread started with an effort to persuade & followed up with smug statements like "can't win any moral argument". But you're right I should just hide threads the moment I perceive that they are about veganism & vegetarianism. Enjoy your echo chamber.

DuckBilledFattypus · 04/10/2022 07:26

If it was just talking about it, then it wouldn't be a problem. The preachy screechy, morally superior attitude, demanding that others also adopt the same lifestyle, especially those who clearly even don't eat well on their vegan diet, yet think they're capable of giving dietary advice, is both amusing and ridiculous in equal doses.

Yes there is a lot of screechy ^ right here

defensive and embarrassed chicken nugget eaters - you sound angry.

the OP says eat less. Not go vegan. Most posters have said that seems reasonable. One or two are droning on sounding more like twats from the daily mail

DuckBilledFattypus · 04/10/2022 08:25

I'm not angry, defensive or embarrassed. If I was any of those things I wouldn't buy meat at all.

I do like watching the morally superior people scrabble together to try and change the world with shit dietary advice and insults such as daily mail readers and twats as your weapon of choice though. It's definitely working for you. Lots of people are coming round to your way of thinking. 😄

It's been like this for ever really. The righteous have never been any good at getting people on side. And they never understand why that is. 🤔 And instead of thinking through why that is, they just get more high pitched and ruder.

Waits...

Your words speak for themselves

Newgirls · 04/10/2022 08:29

Meat buying has fallen by 18% in three years in the UK

I’m glad lots of people are listening. Reduce is the way to go. I agree with OP.

Words tend to do that yes. That is the general idea.

Duckbilled you are the one having a screechy tantrum.

Agree op we now try not to eat meat in the week. Cut right back. Gives me the guilt.

@DuckBilledFattypus

exactly! No one is saying to you to go vegan just try to eat a bit less meat maybe limit it to once a week and at weekends or something. It wouldn’t kill you

No it wouldn't kill me. But I don't want to. So I won't.
Anyway I'm bored with this now as I am sure you will be glad to hear. So I will leave you to direct your great powers of persuasion and dietary advice to other people. Best of luck with that. I'm off to cook a bacon sandwich. Yummy.

IHateArguments · 04/10/2022 09:49

I'm a vegetarian and have been since I was 20, so 20 plus years now. The thing that annoys me about the plant-based trend is that vegetarian options get subbed out for vegan fake-meat ones, to cater to omnivores who are reducing their meat intake. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to reduce meat - I'm hardly going to say that - but I don't get why people can't just eat vegetarian or vegan food if that's what they're doing? If you're having a meat-free day, why not go without the fake stuff? It is annoying for vegetarians and vegans who don't want to eat zalmon or it's-not-chick*n or whatever, because basically our options are reduced in favour of catering to a marketing trend.

I see the not chicken stuff as transitional. It certainly seems to be gaining shelf space.

I tend not to buy it but I did try fake chicken pieces from m and s in the stir fry section recently. They were very nice especially with soy sauce. Their veggie sausages are nice too. For lazy days!
