To ask you to think twice about eating chicken regularly

...it's just not sustainable for us to consume as much as we do.

Intensive chicken farming is polluting and destroying our rivers and also potentially causing breathing difficulties and lung issues in those who live near farms spraying chicken / other animal manure as fertilizer.

Really worrying too, at a time when govt are ripping up EU regs on environmental laws that will further destroy our rivers and the animals, plants and people that rely on them (along with the shit already pumped into them...).

Wow do we have a breakthrough?

I completely agree, so why dont you rein it in a bit, I mean with all the good will in the world you wont stop me eating meat so what is the point in this tooing and froing?

Peace and love Z

To eat the amount of meat we do means that importing is imo a grey area. We don't know about animal welfare in some of these countries. We don't know how dosed up they are with antibiotics , hormones, etc. So I'm happy to eat less and stay local.

But how ethical is my rice, pasta, my salads, my green beans etc.

How ethical is tofu, Quorn. I really don't know what the working conditions of the people who provide us with these foods is. What their wages are like. Whether our lust for cheap food, coconut/Palm oils, avocados, nuts, aren't robbing people of water, well I know in California we are robbing locals of drinking water through contamination.

Everyone on this thread cares about our planet meat eater or not. The big boys buying up huge acreages, Gates, Bezos, eg are land grabbing worldwide. They do worry me. The plant a forest grants in Wales are going not to locals but some overseas shell companies.

I feel like you’re having your own conversation in your head. My partner eats meat and has done all his life. I haven’t eaten any animal product in years. We live in peace. 😂 Rein what in? We can talk about eating meat, being vegan, have opinions on what’s best, welfare standards, the environment. I haven’t tried to stop you eating meat.

So can child abuse, domestic abuse, murder, rape, I'm more bothered about those tbh.

@ZeroFuchsGiven

you do realise that you can care about animal welfare and also the things you list above??

the former and the latter are not mutually exclusive

Meat eaters eat imported food too

lots of meat is imported eg MOST beef eaten in the UK now. Prawns, tuna etc

meat eaters desperately scrabble around to find reasons to shut down uncomfortable questions about animal suffering

climate scientists tell us very clearly that animal feed is the worst for water stripping and pollution - far far higher than nut watering

red washing - cheesy pics of white farmers leaning on gates when the reality is massive metal barns and abattoirs

Stats would be great 😉

Newgirls · 03/10/2022 13:15

bbc news today - 3 million chickens culled due to bird flu in last 12 months

20 million chickens are bred for did each week! The stats are horrific

Newgirls · 03/10/2022 13:16

Bred for food

DuckBilledFattypus · 03/10/2022 13:38

What's your point? That if the chickens weren't there then they wouldn't have got bird flu? I'm not sure that was the stats that the pp was asking for...

justasking111 · 03/10/2022 13:59

Wild birds have fared worse with avian flu especially sea birds. It's a big open secret. You have to join the dots yourself.

Don’t read the thread then

op is right - if there is less intensive chicken farming there wouldn’t be so much flu and death. Enjoy your nuggets

The kids are having them for tea. Yum.

The real issue is there are far too many humans on the planet

and right now heading into what shall be an extremely difficult time financially for many families animal welfare is just not a priority

chicken is cheap and versatile we nearly all turn a blind use to how unethical our consumerism is I don’t think anyone needs to be reminded in regards to ethical food right now when so many will be worrying how they feed their families

I’ve been very poor in the past, animal welfare has always been a priority to me. If someone doesn’t want to prioritise it, that’s their choice, but it is a choice.

Meat is expensive

many of the worlds cheapest diets are veggie

but yes agree ethics choices are often the first to go for some

DuckBilledFattypus · 03/10/2022 18:52

Meat is pretty cheap in Aldi.

HRTQueen · 03/10/2022 19:40

Meat is cheap in comparison than what it used to be. it’s filling it’s used for flavour and many people have got used to eating meat every day (and I don’t mean scraps from a roast three days before) it’s how we eat now

while I am in favour of people eating less meat now just isn’t that time for lecturing when the first thing on peoples minds is being able to feed their families. We all know free range organic meat is better but when buying chicken breasts the difference of £2 or often more is a cost many people have no choice but to take into account

a!: what countries eat cheaper on a veggie diet India? Where most people will be eating a very similar meal
day in day out (not the lovely Indian food we have here)

Swg · 03/10/2022 19:48

Honestly what horrifies me more than people eating meat is people wasting it.

My aunt regularly does a roast chicken dinner. Two weeks running I've wandered into her kitchen, reminded her to put the chicken in the fridge and been told "Oh that's leftovers to be binned" and "I don't like the smell of cold chicken and its only £3 anyway".

I took one of them off her because it hadn't been out too long and I hate the waste. Half a chicken there was there, but it's cheaper to buy than breasts so she doesn't care what she chucks.
