To ask you to think twice about eating chicken regularly

Tigofigo · 25/09/2022 09:03

...it's just not sustainable for us to consume as much as we do.

Intensive chicken farming is polluting and destroying our rivers and also potentially causing breathing difficulties and lung issues in those who live near farms spraying chicken / other animal manure as fertilizer.

Really worrying too, at a time when govt are ripping up EU regs on environmental laws that will further destroy our rivers and the animals, plants and people that rely on them (along with the shit already pumped into them...).

Thanks. We check the fields daily. I'm worried about one of my rams today. He's got a very sore foot and got the vet out to him. There's absolutely no benefit for the sheep farmer to maltreat their sheep. None whatsoever.

Yet some do. ☹️

derxa · 29/09/2022 16:37

StandingInTheMoment · 29/09/2022 16:29

There’s no excuse for not looking after their animals. I doubt you know how ‘most’ other farmers look after their sheep. There’s a lot of them.

They live out in the fields all around me. They don't live in sheds except at lambing time. What sort of cruelty do these farmers you know perpetrate? Explain it.

Newgirls · 29/09/2022 16:40

The OP is about chicken. Very few of those live in fields. They’d prob be stolen for a start!

Inadequate diets, being kept in unsuitable environments, not disposing of carcasses, no dry area, living in several feet deep of faeces, sheep scab, other skin issues, etc.

I’vd seen some of these things myself. For you, you can find all these sorts of things if you google something like sheep farmer prosecution UK.

That could be outing. I don’t see his I’ve seen it matters really. Presumably you don’t defend these farmers.

I don't defend animal maltreatment. Isn't it funny how you can't give any indication how you have seen these cases? You've just Googled haven't you. It always happens on here.

I am surrounded by sheep, never once have I seen any of these issues.

Can you name some of the farms where this has been identified? Id want to know what happened afterwards

Not funny at all, I just don’t want to put it on here. It makes no difference to me if you believe me or not.

It also makes no difference to the fact these things are happening.

🤷🏻‍♀️ Just google. These things have happened. Farmers in court, fines given, bans on keeping animals. Do you think that because you haven’t personally seen things, they haven’t happened?

scaredoff · 29/09/2022 18:07

lljkk · 28/09/2022 19:19

Animals were put on the plant for each other to eat. Humans are animals so...

Animals weren't "put" on the planet. There's nobody to put them there.

scaredoff · 29/09/2022 18:10

sjxoxo · 25/09/2022 21:50

I’ve not bought chicken to cook at home since about 2015. I can’t eat it or buy it because all I think of is their miserable lives in those horrible sheds. It’s literally the last thing on earth I’d like to eat. It’s really quite disgusting and very very cruel. I hope we all eat much much less meat in the coming years. Xxx

Can't you just buy free range chicken? And if that's a problem of expense buy less of it?

derxa · 29/09/2022 18:15

Of course these things happened. People have been prosecuted. But you've just listed reasons for prosecution. Anyone could do that. The fact is that farmers don't have respect for others that do this. And everyone knows everyone else in the community. You cannot bring ill or maltreated animals to market. The market would turn them away and no one would want to buy them. Your posts are trying to imply that these prosecutions are very common. They're not.

You don’t have to google. But it’s a strange way to live life if your thought process is, ‘if I can’t see it happening, it’s not happening.’

Well we will have to agree to disagree, I know plenty farmers and their stock are very well taken care of. I live in a place where anything from fruit and veg/eggs, a couple of pheasants/partridges can be left on my door step as a gift from neighbours local farmers.

I prefer my life to yours, I would hate to be living so uptight.

You asked me what sort of cruelty so I answered. I haven’t implied of tried to imply that these are ‘very common’. I’ve just stated that these cases happen.

So can child abuse, domestic abuse, murder, rape, I'm more bothered about those tbh.

There’s nothing to disagree on. These cases are fact.

That takes nothing away from farmers that comply to welfare standards as I’m sure Derxa does.

Its not being uptight to care about animals or to be vegan or vegetarian. People can have different views.
