For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

EbbyEbs · 24/09/2022 08:25

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

@ReneBumsWombats We've had stories here about kids who got so distressed they needed professional help afterwards.

Yup stories. And the evidence as to what caused this is ....???

That's clearly harm.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't but has causality been proved? - I think not.

but has causality been proved? - I think not

Exactly. But people on here are reporting all sorts of bad experiences, mostly quite vague, but including the death of 6 fit and healthy 40-something friends in close succession(!), and the extreme distress and upset of some teenage girls and ascribing these to Ouija.

By doing so they're perpetuating the myth of Ouija being 'dangerous' and unleashing evil. And as has been noted, this will attract as many as it will deter and further harm may ensue.

Imtoowettowoo · 27/09/2022 19:24

@ReneBumsWombats I'm embarrassed for you.

Ah-ha, the ubiquitous mumsnet put-down, I wondered when that was going to appear in the absence of rational arguments !

So what would you suggest?

That mumsnet employs it's own "censorship" and bans discussion on certain topics ?

You must have missed some posts.

The rational arguments that Ouija Boards do not summon evil or in any way engage with ghosts/spirits or similar are numerous.

1-Ghosts defy all natural laws and don't even follow internal logic.

2-The specific phenomenon of Ouija Boards have been extensively studied. Not only did they find no evidence of any other wordly goings on but they found exactly was what was happening.

3-There is no explanation as to why a mass-produced item such a ouija board would work to summon spirits.

4-There is no explanation why they need human participants.

5-There is no consistency in the reported results of spirit communication via ouija board.

That's just off the top of my head.

Just like you I must have missed your rational arguments. Can you remind me so I can give them the proper consideration?

DillDanding · 27/09/2022 19:36

But for some reason known only to themselves the non-believers want to push their point of view rather aggressively.

To me, it’s like trying to debate with a flat-earther.

You start of thinking explaining something will get through the fog, but then you just have to give up.

No, I get that you think you're turning my methods on me in this incredibly devastating manner. That's what makes it so embarrassing.

But sadly for you, "Kids needed counselling after using a Ouija board BUT CAUSALITY! DIDN'T THINK OF THAT, DID YOU? HAHAHAHA!" isn't even remotely on the same level as a statement as "Ouija is provably caused by ideomotor movement and if a kid needs counselling, harm has been done."

You may not know what causality or false equivalences are, but I think you do. You've just realised how very silly your recent posts are, so now you're trying to deflect again so they'll get buried. But these ones are even dafter.

Who, exactly, do you think doesn't see through this?

Imtoowettowoo · 27/09/2022 19:44

@Miffee 1-Ghosts defy all natural laws and don't even follow internal logic.
Link to research paper please. Also define ''ghost".

Link to research paper(s) please.

3-There is no explanation as to why a mass-produced item such a ouija board would work to summon spirits.

That's because it doesn't. It's the intention of the participants that is purported to do that.
4-There is no explanation why they need human participants.

Who or what needs human participants ?

5-There is no consistency in the reported results of spirit communication via ouija board.

I honestly find it fascinating. These tactics work in real life really well. If your friend or collegue becomes skeptical or derisive about your belief in woo and you feign distress or claim victimhood they would back off. You don't need to engage with their argument, acting like you may get upset is enough. In a real life situation in general conversation it would be incredibly rude for your friend continue to try and explain their skepticism and ask for and explanation if you imply it would upset you. Instead you both just drop it.

That's fine in real life but you can't rely on the same tactics on a message board where the primary aim is to foster and facilitate discussion. Without that tactic people flounder, they keep trying it and wonder why it isn't working.

The thing is, ridiculous and dishonest attempts at deflection might work in person when it can be difficult to remember exactly what was said and how you got on to this tangent.

They don't really work on an online forum because everyone can easily look back and see what people have said. So you can try to throw in irrelevant rhetoric such as "but who judges what's harmful?" as if the conversation led to that, or outright lies such as "you haven't said anything rational", but as it's all right there in writing, it doesn't work. People can follow your dishonesty.

That's when you get to the point we're at now, where a person will just say any old thing to deflect and muddy the discussion and bury the pertinent points. It's still all out there, though.

I'm not obsessive. I find it interesting how people believe in things that defy all logic. I like reading about it.

You should really stop name calling if you want to continue to claim you are the calm one and I am aggressive.

Please don’t do it. I have had to pick up the pieces and do pastoral care and house cleansings for people who dabble with stuff they can’t handle.

THIS ^

I agree with @clairethewitch70. It might sound silly but there are some very unpleasant influences out there.

Even if you attribute any "nastiness" to mental health problems, they can certainly be released in a tense and potentially frightening situation like ouija.

Personally I do think that there are malign forces which can and do take advantage of vulnerability - and we can all be spiritually vulnerable.

Actually the Ouija is irrelevant it's the intent that's important.

Another thing I have noticed is that they never challenge each other. All through this thread there are completely contradictory statements about how woo operates and yet they never take issue with each other. Believing in woo is enough, the particular brand of woo is irrelevant. If X poster just completely contradicted your statement about Ouija Boards and said they work in a totally different way its absolutely fine as long as they agree that how they work is woo based.

It's really interesting to read.

I can only infer you have nothing of substance to say.
