Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

YABVVU and I worry about what kind of regime operates at your place.

OhGingleBells · 23/09/2022 12:21

You are right!! I don’t sit or lay on my bed (or let anyone else!) unless wearing nightclothes! Or if wrapped in a clean towel/bathrobe 😉

I’d forgive him (and wash the bedlinen asap) this time - but it’s gross.

Preemiemummy2 · 23/09/2022 12:21

Gosh I’ve never even thought about it so YABU.

MelodyPondsMum · 23/09/2022 12:22

The 'rule' of not putting outdoor clothes on beds predates Covid. It also used to be the standard rule in hospitals.

Horizons83 · 23/09/2022 12:22

Oh god you’re the same as my husband. I am also forbidden from putting a bag on any surface other than the floor.

FirewomanSam · 23/09/2022 12:22

My husband knows to take his jeans off before lying on the bed but that’s because we had mysterious blue stains all over our white sheets that I eventually realised were coming from his new-ish, dark blue jeans. Otherwise I couldn’t care less, especially if he’s on top of the covers. I’m slightly more fussy about not wearing outside clothes IN the bed myself but even then I’d never tell my husband not to do it, it’s his bed too!

Suitcases on the other hand I am really strict about, because they’re a sure-fire way to transfer bed bugs from hotel to home. I have trained myself to never ever put bags on the beds at either end of the journey!

OP, you are right. I am, maybe, the only one on your side.
outside is full of germs.

how hard to change clothes after going home?
oh dear, he was not big ill or can't move, just pain in a mouth.

Inside is full of germs as well, you're full of germs as well, you'd be dead if you weren't.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2022 12:23

Do you know how much time HCP in all settings spend cleaning these days???

Certainly in hospitals. Went for a blood test last week and got a slightly damp bum from where the haematologist had wiped the chair down from the previous patient.

hamsterchump · 23/09/2022 12:23

lemonyanus · 23/09/2022 12:17

Remember when people did this at the start of covid Grin

Yes! When I first saw this I thought they must have been doing the walk of shame from a fancy dress party!

honeylulu · 23/09/2022 12:24

Erm ... what do you think will happen?

I sometimes come in from work and flop on the bed for a minute. I commute by train and tube too. I bet you would shit yourself in horror!

I do leave my shoes on a rack by the front door as wearing them in the house tracks bits of grit around so saves frequent hoovering. I'd also take off outdoor clothes if they were obviously muddy or soiled in some way. But otherwise, meh! It doesn't get the bed dirty and no one has been ill as a result. I've not had a day off sick since January 2013, so there!

eurochick · 23/09/2022 12:24

What do you think would happen?

And what do you do about hair? That has been to all to the same places as the clothes you are wearing and can pick up city grime, etc. do you wash hair every time you want to lie down?

Arenanewbie · 23/09/2022 12:24

I wouldn’t, we all are changing straight away after coming in.
Saying this I wouldn’t use such strong words to DH as “disgusting”
after visit to a dentist. I would assume that he’s in pain and need a bit of love and support.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2022 12:24

Phlebotomist, I mean. And to think I went to all the trouble of spelling haematologist and it's the wrong word....

Livpool · 23/09/2022 12:25

YABU

I don't see the issue at all - under or on top on cover

ReneBumsWombats · 23/09/2022 12:25

I bet you would shit yourself in horror!

To be fair, I probably would change my clothes before sitting on the bed if I did this.

megletthesecond · 23/09/2022 12:25

I would never lie on my bed in outside clothes.
Quick change into trackpants and t-shirt first. Outdoor clothes aren't comfy anyway. I'd have to be at deaths door to want to keep them on.

miserablecat · 23/09/2022 12:25

I would put pjs or joggers on because I think they're more comfortable for lying down in than jeans but that's not really the point.

I wouldn't find it disgusting. Gardening, painting, plastering or doing things that are obviously dirty then yes. Sitting in a dentist chair/going in the car I couldn't get upset about. The cat lays on our bed without getting changed too! 😉

They're generally really shit at wiping down the chairs though. Most of them wipe where your bum has been but not the places people are most likely to touch the chairs with their hands

honeylulu · 23/09/2022 12:26

Your husband's gob is full of germs too. Don't you ever snog him? ( not when he's just been to the dentist obviously.) Or do you run away crying and screaming "Arrrrggh GERMS!!!"

TheKeatingFive · 23/09/2022 12:26

do you wash hair every time you want to lie down?

Dont give people ideas

You hope! 😁

AloysiusBear · 23/09/2022 12:26

What's "disgusting" about worn clothes?

Unless they are covered in mud/paint etc, they are just.... worn. People aren't "dirty".

thesonicoscillator · 23/09/2022 12:27

Used to, then I moved to Italy where I was told it wasn't a very hygenic thing to do!

Suzi888 · 23/09/2022 12:27

rubyslippers · 23/09/2022 11:26

I think you’re totally unreasonable
he’s in pain and needed to lay down after a wisdom tooth extraction
he’s not been rolling around in mud

🤣

But OP YABU to put clean clothes on without a shower/bath before getting in to bed. I let your DH off as he was ill and lay on top of the bed.

ittakes2 · 23/09/2022 12:27

My daughter feels the same as you but she has diagnosed OCD and has contamination concerns. I also have diagnosed OCD with contamination issues but this would not bother me. I am guessing you are an anxious person?
