Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

I'm lolloping in the spare bed now , later I will be watching TV in my bed room. I'm no stranger to squalor tho because I was brought up middle class. 😇

Bestcatmum · 23/09/2022 15:48

I certainly would lie down on the bed in my clothes unless I'd just been working down the mines. When I'm off work I go for an hours nap in bed in my clothes in the afternoon.
No shoes in the house though.

I wrap myself, and my soft furnishings, in Cling Film before sitting or lying down

😅

loislovesstewie · 23/09/2022 15:50

Do you actually take your clothes off at the door then? Because if you don't then you will be getting filth over the floor when you take them off inside the house. Perhaps we should all strip off in the garden, just to be on the safe side, shower with a hose and then go in.

I wouldn't give it a moment's thought unless I had been mucking out horses or something. You are very unreasonable.

Same here.

fishonabicycle · 23/09/2022 15:58

Yeah - you're neurotic. Unless he worked in a sewer or something.

If he was a tradesman then yes I would expect a change but not just normal clothes. He might have been more comfortable changing to lounge wear but if ur in pain he probs just wanted to rest.

I read this as in a random tradesman would need to change clothes before lying on your bed, not that if your husband was a tradesman 😂really made me laugh so thanks!

but yes OP sorry, I think you’re being completely unreasonable.

TheMoops · 23/09/2022 16:05

all outside clothes are to be removed before sitting anywhere in the house.

What now?

How ridiculous. How do people have time to even think like this let alone change clothes multiple times a day.

The world has gone mad.

For the people who get changed before sitting on the sofa, what happens when you have visitors or when you visit others?

In my case, nothing happens when visitors come obviously other than asking for shoes off. If I go to someone else's house, then I would ask if they want my shoes off, I've never met anyone that has expected me to change into some other clothes just because they do it so these kind of quedtion is pointless.

A hosepipe? That you have used to water plants?

Pop yourself in an autoclave, that might be approaching adequate cleanliness for the sofa. You need a full 85C sodium hypochlorite disinfection cycle to lie on the bed.

Wafflesnsniffles · 23/09/2022 16:17

Hes the reasonable one. You totally not.
Even if I had been wandering around London all day and been on the tube Id happily lie down on my bed when I got back without bothering to change. Totally fine.

If it was raining or I had been rolling around in mud, gardening. Obviously not.

Reallyreallyborednow · 23/09/2022 16:19

Someone needs to explain this “rule” to my cat 😂

she comes in from god knows where, straight on the bed.

Most of us have never visited anyone who takes their clothes off before sitting on their own chairs either, but there is somebody claiming to do that upthread. Though I don’t actually believe them.

If you just take your shoes off indoors, the question wasn’t aimed at you.

Sillysop92 · 23/09/2022 16:30

My dog sleeps on my bed, so outdoor clothes wouldn't bother me!

Arwen7 · 23/09/2022 16:49

@Changechangychange I replied as we do change into 'house clothes' when we come home. Not in a maniac, ritualistic, crazy, germophobic sort of a way some people in here imagine it to be. We are chilled people. I do keep the house very clean though even having pets and that's how I like it but I'm not a clean freak and I also think that each to their own.
I do however have to do house visits as part of my job and I can tell you that hygiene standards are very, very variable! We also live in London and tbh public transport in particular can be filthy and there are always a good amount of people that stink when I take the bus in the morning so that makes me think that even though we are surrounded by germs and that is absolutely natural and healthy, some people/places carry more than others and simply prefer to change clothes when home.
But would never expect any guests to do that and doubt anyone would 😂 I think that some of the comments in this thread are a bit sarcastic and mean tbh.
I'm also personally much more comfortable in lounge clothes and slippers as well so it takes no effort whatsoever to change into them. And sitting on the sofa with outdoor clothes is not prohibited either so we do it from time to time but just not as a habit. In/on the bed though, hardly ever. Would need to be knackered or unwellI to do that but again it wouldn't be like we would go crazy if it happened!
also said earlier maybe it's a cultural thing? My parents were/are the same.

Mamai90 · 23/09/2022 16:59

sst1234 · 23/09/2022 11:33

Nope. When you see some of the people with poor hygiene out and about sitting in public spaces, and you then sit on the same seats.

What do you think you'll catch? Serious question. Do you think you'll get ill?

Lampzade · 23/09/2022 17:00

Visitors can obviously sit on my sofa / chairs with outside clothes.
However, I have never slept in my bed with outside clothes on.
I don’t even sit on my bed with my outside clothes on.
My kids always changed their school uniform when they came home and put on lounge wear.

How does this work if you're in and out all day?

For example, today I've done the school run, popped to the shop, library and had my nails done. In between these I've been at home either sitting in my sofa or working in my study.

zingally · 23/09/2022 17:18

God, poor guy can't even lie on his own bed in his own house!

If I fancy a mid-afternoon nap on the weekends, I GET INTO bed wearing my clothes I've had on that day!

I'm a primary school teacher, and we can't afford to be that anal about germs and dirt. Have you MET a 4-year-old?

GloriousGlory · 23/09/2022 17:18

@TheMoops I was going to ask the exact same thing! Peoples washing must be immense!

caroleanboneparte · 23/09/2022 17:24

Only a tyrant would demand someone in pain remove their clothes before lying down!

Cleopatra67 · 23/09/2022 17:35

Utterly bizarre.

Arwen7 · 23/09/2022 17:40

@TheMoops hmm I guess I don't tend to go in/out that many times during the day. Like it may be 2 or max 3 times? I would usually just go to the loo as soon as I arrive (cause small bladder!), wash hands, go in room and change. Like it literally takes me 2min? Maybe I would change my habits if I was going in/out lots of times a day but I've never had such a problem.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/09/2022 17:47

Honestly how on earth do people find the time or energy to worry about stuff like this….

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/09/2022 17:54

PetalLeaves · 23/09/2022 14:57

You are NOT unreasonable at all OP. I don’t do that and my partner now does the same. It’s disgusting to. Unless we haven’t sat down anywhere, then all outside clothes are to be removed before sitting anywhere in the house. Anyone who does is a bit gross to be honest… probably the same people who rarely wash their hands 😬each to their own though!

I am at a loss to understand why walking around outside in fresh air is any less hygienic than walking around in your house? Can you explain?

Also how do you find time for these constant outfit changes? I leave my house several times a day. I couldn’t get anything done if I constantly had to change.
