Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

OP posts:

Ok everyone the OP is wrong and she now knows but my god reading this thread is something else!!! The OP has been diagnosed as abusive and/or mentally unwell in the same thread… I’m sure we all have things in our head that we think are normal and others think are strange!! Caaaaalm dooooown!!!

If a woman posted on here saying she had a wisdom tooth out and got home in loads of pain so was immediately lying on the bed in her clothes, and her husband called her 'disgusting' everyone would be rightly saying he was being absolutely horrible and that it was a bizarre thing to chastise someone for. Because it is.

But what about your guests? Surely they don't get changed to sit on your sofa?

I wish they would! I'd love a guest to turn up and say "just popping to the bathroom to wash my hands and to put on some clean joggers/leggings/trousers before I sit down on the sofa". Ahh, perfect guest. 10/10 😆

TorviShieldMaiden · 23/09/2022 13:53

Not only do I lie on my bed with outside clothes on, but I often get into bed for a snugly lie down or nap in my clothes. The horror!

We are a shoes off household, but only to stop loads of mud everywhere. Sometimes i run upstairs in my outside shoes if I've forgotten something. But I don't lick the carpet, so I'm probably ok

worriedatthistime · 23/09/2022 13:53

@wellhelloitsme exactly what i said this place has enormous double standards
If OP had just said she felt it wasn't right and not that she had told him it was disgusting etc Fair enough

BusyBeaMe · 23/09/2022 13:54

YANBU!!
I have this ‘debate’ all the time at home. The thought gives me the heebie jeebies.

the transfer of grub from bus seats, unwashed clothes, unwashed bottoms, trains, hospitals, benches. Who knows what’s gone on!

I used to hate it at uni when someone would come in and sit on my bed.

call me a little OCD with it, but it’s not allowed in my house!!

PS- I have similar feelings about the decorative cushions on hotel beds!!

BusyBeaMe · 23/09/2022 13:55

I’m guilty of this too!

worriedatthistime · 23/09/2022 13:55

@sst1234 normal standards as opposed to low is what most have in this thread
We have no shoes but thats because shoes are often dirty and carpets cost lots to clean
That said when my son came home hurt and walked in with his shoes on , it wasn't the thing I thought of first
Theres being clean and being OTT then at the other end unhygenic

BusyBeaMe · 23/09/2022 13:56

Guilty as in the sofa…

worriedatthistime · 23/09/2022 13:56

@BusyBeaMe do you change before sitting on your sofa too ?

BellePeppa · 23/09/2022 13:57

Unless he has a particularly mucky job then you’re unreasonable. I couldn’t be doing with someone telling me to change my clothes but I have a strong dislike of anyone bossing me about. I often lie on my bed in the clothes I’ve been wearing all day, it hasn’t killed anyone yet.

Worried234 · 23/09/2022 13:57

Fuck me, you're unhinged.

FamBae · 23/09/2022 13:57

Yes I would, but then again I have dogs on my bed so that must make my hygiene standards non existent.

TheKeatingFive · 23/09/2022 13:57

well ok, but what impact is that actually going to have? Our bodies are designed to cope with minuscule levels of germs, it's how we keep our immune systems at the top of their game.

@blueskyeve I'm with you and don't see why it's shocking that some people don't wear outdoor clothes on their beds or sofa. I find it shocking that so many people have no standards.

I've seen people on the tube cough, sneeze and splutter into the seats. Feet on the seats after trailing through saliva. Vomit on nights out. Why would I want to sit on those seats and then bring it all back to my gorgeous, clean, comfy sofa. It takes a few seconds to get some loungewear or pjs on, then sit back and relax.

It’s a normal part of existing in the world to be surrounded by the product of human life.

You can try to scrub your life clean but you are never managing to. None of the factory controls or restaurant processes will be as good as you assume. The water you wash your hands and clothes with is not some magical clean untouched water. The sofa and bed you sleep in is covered in microorganisms and fly bottoms will have touched your pillow.

Welcome to life.

blueskyeve · 23/09/2022 11:51

Haha! It's so amusing how people have built this idea of who I am and my entire personality because of one little point I made.

Maybe it’s because your opening post gives the impression you were more concerned over your discomfort over bed linen than your husband’s worse discomfort having had a wisdom tooth out.

Jenhen89 · 23/09/2022 14:02

Is this a joke? Are you insane?
Poor bloke.

ChristmasJumpers · 23/09/2022 14:03

I honestly don't get this. I work from home and if I nip upstairs, I will go and sit on my bed (fully clothed) and give my cats a snuggle in bed. Yes I have up to 3 cats on my bed as well as my own fully clothed self!

I couldn't live like that or I'd be stripping off multiple times a day 😂

SunshineLoving · 23/09/2022 14:04

I don't always change my 'outside' clothes before lying on the bed but I have read other people's post on the internet before who have the same opinion as you. I get why you think this. Yes, we could have picked up who knows what germs when we've been out and about.

However, I don't believe I've ever become ill/have a dirty home because I sometimes lie down in my outside clothes. Also, some germs are good to build your immune system.

I think you were being quite unreasonable to raise this with your DH when he was in pain. But, you believed it was the right thing to do at the time.

BusyBeaMe · 23/09/2022 14:04

@worriedatthistime no, I don’t go that far and it would be pointless with kids etc. However, I would If I’ve been sat on a train or a and e waiting room chair, for example!

For what it’s worth, I have a couple of friends who feel similarly about the bed issue. We’re pretty otherwise pretty normal!

What's scary is that I can't tell if you're serious.

girlfriend44 · 23/09/2022 14:05

i dont lie in bed in clothes no.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 23/09/2022 14:06

I don't like it at all but I wouldn't have a go if my DH was ill. I'd put up with it then.

3ShotsOfEspresso · 23/09/2022 14:06

Holy crap!

Op: am I wrong
MN: yes
Op: oh buggar, I’ll apologise, my bad, thanks.

THE UNHINGED OF MN: YOU ARE CONTROLLING! ARE YOU ILL?! GET A LIFE!! HE DESERVES BETTER!!

Fuuuuuuuck me people are WILD 🤣🤣🤣🤣

hamstersarse · 23/09/2022 14:08

The thought of not doing this has never crossed my mind in 48 years

Not once.

I didn't know it was even a thing

HeidiWhole · 23/09/2022 14:09

I wouldn't even notice I don't think. Shoes maybe but not clothes.
Our dog gets in the bed, Christ knows what germs he brings in but it doesn't seem to do us any harm 😂
