Would you lie on your bed in the clothes you've been wearing all day?

My dh got home from the dentist yesterday afternoon (he had a wisdom tooth taken out), he was in a bit of pain and discomfort so went to lie down. I went to check if he was ok/needed anything and saw he was lying on our bed fully clothed with the clothes he had on all day. I told him that was disgusting and could he remove them please, but he didn't understand why. He said (via text as he couldn't talk) 'But where have I been sat? The dentist? Where everything is famously clean?' That day he had also been sat in the car, been to the shops, taken our dc to school. If it was me I would always remove jeans etc. and put on pj's or clean leggings/joggers before lying on the bed.

Who is right?

Also to add with smoke comment, even not in winter, if you go to central London all the time, outside clothes will smell of pollution and smoke just from cigarette. And yes i do have a sensitive nose!

Clearly not as some others on the thread agree with me.

I definitely agree with you. I always change clothes as soon as I get home. I often travel on public transport and I live in grimy central London.

LadyFromage · 23/09/2022 12:59

Like others, I find the outdoor clothes rules on mn a bit bonkers.

Not least because all of us touch those clothes all day, every day. All of us also, subconsciously, touch our faces multiple times a day. Or we touch something that touches our mouth, like a mug or a fork or a sandwich or a tablet or whatever.

It's mad to be worried about outside germs on the topside of bed linen but not worried about them in other circumstances.

CannibalQueen · 23/09/2022 13:01

Yes I would. And have done. But not the shoes unless I was on top of all my covers.

PollyAmour · 23/09/2022 11:26

He is.

You are unsympathetic and a bit silly. It's not like he's actually in the bed with his clothes on.

I'd of prob got into bed with mine on lol

CapMarvel · 23/09/2022 13:03

Even if it is a rule worth enforcing (which it isn't) it's a bit of a dick move to have a go at someone who is suffering over something so completely trivial.

Deguster · 23/09/2022 13:03

What @DoubleBuggyDriver said. I know there are germs everywhere, but rat piss and vomit crumbs are all over public transport. Plus DH works in a hospital and it literally smells of shit and vomit when you walk in. (I am old enough to remember when they smelt of disinfectant - probably around the last time the NHS employed its own cleaners!) So yes, the idea of sharing intimate space with anything that has been swilling around in that all day makes me boak.

My bedding is either linen or silk, it's one thing I always lash out on. So I don't allow anything except freshly-showered bodies in clean jammies to get on it/in it. (Even then I'd rather hairy DH didn't). Yes I am aware I will never win an MN competitive slattern competition, and that I am anally retentive, but it's not harming anyone and I am an otherwise functioning human.

knittingaddict · 23/09/2022 13:03

On the bed - totally fine.

In the bed - not great, but I'm sure I've done when really ill and I certainly wouldn't think it was a hanging offence.

YABVU.
I had all 4 wisdom teeth outimpacted, needed general anaesthetic and stitches
I just about got home before I started vomiting blood.
I was basically dead for the next 24 hrs - although I think I collapsed on the sofa with snooker on the telly...
I couldn't open my mouth for about 10 days and survived on chocolate buttons, yoghurt and milkshake...hot things were a no-no.
You need to say sorry and mean it as he will remember the enormous amount of empathy you had for him when you need help.

Sorry to hear you went through that. Sounds awful. My dh has had one wisdom tooth out. He is doing great and is working today (he wanted to - I didn't force him 😆). Our relationship isn't one where he would hold something like this against me.

I've already said sorry. I've told him about this thread. We've been laughing about the whole thing. We don't take life too seriously. It wasn't a big deal to me or him. We've had bigger fish to fry than this.

Outdoor clothes on the bed is not something I'd encourage but under the circumstances I think I would probably have kept quiet as he was in pain.

I once had an estate agent who had come to value my house for selling sit on the bed, obviously on the edge, he didn't lie down.

I was so taken aback I actually didn't say anything. Obviously, I didn't use his company for the sale though.

PuddlesOnFire · 23/09/2022 13:05

Yes OP, I wanted to thank you for the thread to. It's given my partner and myself a few laughs.

TenoringBehind · 23/09/2022 13:07

assuming he hadn’t been muck speaking or down a pit, then yes. Seems very cruel to make a big deal of this if he was in pain.

Deguster · 23/09/2022 13:07

Tell me you washed your shopping during the height of the pandemic without telling me you washed your shopping during the height of the pandemic

No need - Dettol does a spray disinfectant which I used while it was still in the plastic boxes. I still do it now.

Dis626 · 23/09/2022 13:07

YABVU and quite frankly ridiculous. Your poor DH

loislovesstewie · 23/09/2022 13:08

So, if you have designated house clothes you presumably then have to put on other clothes if you need to pop to the shops for 4 pints of milk? ( or an emergency bottle of wine)
Sod that for a lark, that would double my daily washing.

TenoringBehind · 23/09/2022 13:09

That should have said muck spreading. Much speaking might be positively encouraged in the context of a bed

Whingewhingewine · 23/09/2022 13:09

He is right, you sound scary

You're made. Having a little lie down on the bed is one of life's pleasures and comforts. I wouldn't wear shoes but otherwise crack on. What exactly do you think might happen? You know you need exposure to bacteria for the sake of your immune system right?

Carmakomelian · 23/09/2022 13:11

Haha mad not made

GloriousGlory · 23/09/2022 13:11

Poor bloke!

Opaljewel · 23/09/2022 13:11

I do all the time. Get a grip

whynotwhatknot · 23/09/2022 13:11

DueyCheatemAndHow · 23/09/2022 13:13

Disgusting?

That's enough Internet for me today!

breathcalmly · 23/09/2022 13:14

you are not crazy like some have mentioned but I do wonder if it’s an OCD - my DS has contamination OCD and would absolutely hate someone lying on his bed clothed. May be worth a Google x
