Madonna… wtf??

Madonnas Instagram just popped up on my feed.

erm.

is it genuine? She has had so much work done that she looks about 25 - in the pics - I imagine in real life it looks kinda weird.

and it all seems to be some kind of weird porn inspired vibe - but in a very clunky and unsubtle way.

I am genuinely shocked. I haven’t really seen anything of her for quite a while.

is this a surprise to anyone else or have I been totally out of the loop??

Of course teenagers won't know much about her yet if they don't pay much attention to music from before their time. As they grow up, though, they'll learn more about her. It just takes a bit of time for the younger generations to discover the earlier stuff.

She's an icon and I'm not even a fan.

Alcemeg · 23/09/2022 23:04

Never mind what she looks like... why is she embodying depravity, sleaze and corruption? A quick glance at her Insta makes me feel I need a shower, like catching sight of some cheap and nasty porn from the early 80s.

It's really sad. I think she has always tried too hard to be cool and sexy -- like the David Letterman interview, which is too painful to watch, it's so affected:
...and now, presumably because she doesn't want to age, it seems she's just panicking completely and losing the plot.

I once went to a wedding in the US where a high proportion of the women there looked like this. I'd never seen anything like it before, so to have a room full of them was very disturbing, like being at Madame Tussaud's.

I don’t think Madonna’s music will be rediscovered by this group of teens. Why would it?

she has a less prominent SM following than you’d expect, given her level of fame. 18 million followers of Insta - Gaga has 53 million, Billy Eilish has 106 million.

Im not denying she was an icon - I loved her too - but her popularity has waned and “the kids” aren’t going to be enticed by her simulating oral sex

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 23/09/2022 23:41

She's an icon and I'm not even a fan.

Apart from Like a Virgin and her mediocre cover of American Pie I couldn't name a single song by Madonna.

gnilliwdog · 23/09/2022 23:44

Maybe I am wrong, but I see her as embodying the spirit of the 80s. The materialism, hunger for money, get to the top, power woman. It was a greedy time, but quite an innocent time too. Times have changed and maybe younger people have a different mood and they find that in Billie Eilish, who I think has a genuine talent as well. Not sure what she sings about but maybe it seems more relevant. She also is the opposite of Madonna in that she doesn't dress or behave in an overly sexual way, which teenage girls may find more empowering.

plainjane40 · 23/09/2022 13:20

And here!

@plainjane40 She was mesmerising in those videos! Honest, articulate and totally real. Plus, ravishingly attractive. It’s easy to forget that version of her.

Men are allowed to get old and Mick Jagger is a prick.

Absolutely this! Not to mention take away the fame and money most men sleeping with women young enough to be their grand daughters are vile beings

nolongersurprised · 24/09/2022 00:01

it was ever thus, though, wasn’t it? I do think Madonna hasn’t managed her socials well. I’m only on Instagram to keep an eye on my teens (who prefer Snapchat, which I can’t work out 😀) but 18 million is comparatively few followers - Taylor Swift has 225. Or maybe it’s just because Madonna’s residual fans are now middle aged, not into social media and she isn’t interesting to today’s young people.

But I think Madonna’s wrong in thinking that simulating oral sex and open mouthed kissing footage will make her interesting to this group. Eilish’s insta has pics of her looking moody (of course), performing and digging a hole on a beach. Swift’s has pics of her kitten.

i agree it’s vile for aging rockers to have sex with young women. But it’s ok for Madonna - in her 60s - to be in a relationship with a man in his 20s?

So what?

ReneBumsWombats · 24/09/2022 00:26

Because she's the best selling female recording artist of all time, that's why. We all discovered popular music that came about from major artists 20 years before we were born, or longer. She may become a sound of a former era but she's not going to sink into obscurity! She'll be like Abba or Elvis Presley.

Hopefullysoon2022 · 24/09/2022 00:36

They haven't outsold her though.
Billy,Gaga is of their timecome back in 29 year's and do a like for like.
Haha and Eilish wont be in n her level.

So what?

I don't think her music will last. I expect I must have heard more of it without it making the slightest impression.

I can't imagine that teenagers would look to her in the way that they might to Kurt Cobain.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 24/09/2022 00:53

I don't think her music will last.
😂 That's funny - seeing as she's been going strong since the 80s and still a massive star whether you like her or not.

She's a completely different kind of artist. People never looked at her like they did Cobain and she never tried to make them. She's the Queen of Pop. It's like comparing Danielle Steel to Margaret Atwood.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/09/2022 00:56

I mean, seriously. Like I said, I'm not really a fan myself but I can't deny the success the woman's had. To suggest she must be a nothing because I personally couldn't name many of her songs (I can, but pretending I couldn't) is just daft. Can most people name many Nirvana songs apart from the really famous one?

I agree she WAS more famous than today’s popular artists. But she’s not as popular NOW as they are.

This isn’t a criticism - no one would have expected her to have been as fresh and relevant to this lot of young people as with our generation.

It’s interesting how some posters see her filters and fillers and surgery and corsets and sex acts now as ongoing smashing of boundaries and expectations and social norms and some just see it as sort of pathetic.

i don’t, however, think she’d be trying so hard if she didn’t care about her image.

Tabbouleh · 24/09/2022 01:19

Of course she is phenomenally succesful. I am not a fan but even I can name at least 10 of her songs. Because they were everywhere.

The thing is she's trying to navigate her way through.
Same way Taylor in 20/40 years will be navigating her way through

Oh Cobain had that snobby know it all attitude When she wanted to sign him

Until he learned she came up the hard way by

EntertainingandFactual · 24/09/2022 01:41

I don’t know anyone who is into Madonna or her music and I never have, yet, she is extremely popular… I want to know who all these people are! I must move in very different circles!

And there’ll be new artists, and Swift will seem passé to the younger kids and people won’t really be interested anymore.

🤷‍♀️

I do think it’s a shame though that Madonna now - filters and fillers and puffy-faced fish-lips simulating oral sex - is how my kids will be introduced to her.

But I get that others think she’s norm-busting and all that

FishBowlSwimmer · 24/09/2022 05:17

She was my idol as a teen, Desperately seeking Susan, one of my favourite movies. A strong female roll model, at a time when there weren't many.

Over the years, however I came to realise that she is in fact a very complicated person. She's intelligent, articulate, but she's also very insecure when it comes to men and beauty. Over the last decade age has hit her hard, she's had knee problems and has been advised to eat more dairy, this has caused her to gain weight (I think her body looks better than the ultra skinny one previously tbh), I find it sad that SHE (Kick ass feminist pop sensation) doesn't feel that she's earned the right to just be herself.

After telling us all for years she won't conform to societies expectations of women, she's done the exact opposite in her old age. Her face is a mess frankly, and maybe that's why she now filters so heavily.

ReneBumsWombats · 24/09/2022 07:20

Is there really someone in the MN demographic who couldn't name Material Girl, Papa Don't Preach, La Isla Bonita, Vogue or Ray of Light?

Alcemeg · 24/09/2022 08:07

Ray of Light will always be one of my favourite tracks of all time, including the video. William Orbit is a genius though!
