Impossible task: help identifying a song with almost no clues

Hello,

My wife is driving herself crazy trying to remember a particular song that she used to play to my son a couple of years ago. There are almost no clues to go on and it feels a little futile, but perhaps worth a try...

  • Relatively modern - post 2000
  • An acoustic song
  • By a male artist - someone who's more known for a different type of music - she says 'electronic music' - but this particular song is certainly acoustic
  • Song is featuring another male singer. Perhaps not a duet, but certainly two of them involved
  • The song is about friendship - old friends etc. May or may not mention friends / friendship in the title
  • This is almost certainly a red herring, but she has a feeling the artist's name may be 'Paul' something

If you think the above list is vague, just be glad you're not able to to hear the three notes of the melody that she's able to remember, and is humming repeatedly. Over... and over... and over....

Any suggestions that may save our sanity are welcome. Inevitably when she remembers the song the above clues will all turn out to be incorrect - it'll be a song from the 70s by a female solo singer or something. Apologies in advance for utterly wasting your time, but do please help if you can...

Thanks!

I'm going for '7 Years' by Lukas Graham as my entry

ThePenOfMyAunt · 22/09/2022 14:20

Could it be See you again, Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth. It was dedicated to Paul Walker, who had passed away, on the sound track to Fast and Furious 7

ThePenOfMyAunt · 22/09/2022 14:21

sorry just seen that's already been suggested!

mamabear715 · 22/09/2022 14:24

Paul Carrack? The Living Years or any others of his?

Sparkles13 · 22/09/2022 14:46

Love threads like this so placemarking .

All I can think of is pure morning by placebo but I doubt you would sing / play it to a baby :D

Daringdarling · 22/09/2022 14:57

Could it be acoustic with a xylophone?

It begins in a Nordic, eery, folksy sort of innocent way, until the chorus when it reaches a crescendo of how deeply upset the singer is about what has happened

It’s called
“Someone that I used to know” but most people will recount the lyrics “You didn’t have to cut me off’.

Could it be that?

isthismylifenow · 22/09/2022 15:07

I'm sure it isn't this, but as I was reading your post Kenny Rogers You can't make Old Friends popped into my head.

I know it's not 2000+ and he sang with Dolly, and I don't know of an acoustic version.... But maybe, just maybe?

And I would sing it to my DC so I think this is why I link it in my mind.

There are sites like spinditty that allow you to search under a term like 'friends' and it'll show you a stack of playlists containing songs that relate to your search term.

Athenajm80 · 22/09/2022 15:23

Thinking about what you said with your wife humming just three bars, I am a TERRIBLE singer, tone deaf, can't even hum a tune, but I used one of those apps or maybe website that works out what song you're singing or in my case humming and it actually worked. I was very impressed so give it a go, maybe on a few different ones.

Gary Numan (one of the most famous ever for electronic music) released some acoustic tracks a little while ago. Could it be one of them?

RaspberryFlavourOwl · 22/09/2022 16:21

Nizlopi

BlackCatTabbyCat · 22/09/2022 16:24

I don't know why but Newton Faulkner popped into my head as soon as I read your post. Very random but worth a mention.

Happyher · 22/09/2022 16:28

Does she know the lyrics? If so just Google a line or too. Works for me

wherearetheturrets · 22/09/2022 16:47

Parov stelar or mr scruff?

Calmdown14 · 22/09/2022 16:47

What about Hey There Delilah by the Plain White Tees.

Doesn't fit several of the clues but you said these might be out! Heard it on radio today and it took me back to my early 2000s job immediately

WhoWasThatMaskedWoman · 22/09/2022 16:50

I don't think anyone's suggested Waiting On A Friend by the Rolling Stones?

indecisivewoman81 · 22/09/2022 16:51

I might be miles out but didn't one direction do a video similar to what you describing but I've no idea of the song...

Annettebee · 22/09/2022 17:15

Jack Johnson, Better when we're together?
It's acoustic and guests Damien Rice.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 22/09/2022 17:23

For Lovers by Wolfman featuring Pete Doherty

Ticks some of the boxes, particularly the 'not known for this genre' one and, even if it's not the one, it's a beautiful song that deserves more airplay!

Etinoxaurus · 22/09/2022 17:27

Willie Nelson, Me and Paul
I don’t think there was a video, and I can’t see what was posted about one here so probably barking up the wrong tree.
