Impossible task: help identifying a song with almost no clues

Hello,

My wife is driving herself crazy trying to remember a particular song that she used to play to my son a couple of years ago. There are almost no clues to go on and it feels a little futile, but perhaps worth a try...

  • Relatively modern - post 2000
  • An acoustic song
  • By a male artist - someone who's more known for a different type of music - she says 'electronic music' - but this particular song is certainly acoustic
  • Song is featuring another male singer. Perhaps not a duet, but certainly two of them involved
  • The song is about friendship - old friends etc. May or may not mention friends / friendship in the title
  • This is almost certainly a red herring, but she has a feeling the artist's name may be 'Paul' something

If you think the above list is vague, just be glad you're not able to to hear the three notes of the melody that she's able to remember, and is humming repeatedly. Over... and over... and over....

Any suggestions that may save our sanity are welcome. Inevitably when she remembers the song the above clues will all turn out to be incorrect - it'll be a song from the 70s by a female solo singer or something. Apologies in advance for utterly wasting your time, but do please help if you can...

Thanks!

Very left-field, but Nine Inch Nails have several acoustic versions of Hurt knocking around, and it mentions friends in the lyrics a couple of times.

Could it be something by Avicii? There's an acoustic version of Wake Me Up that's just the singer, Aloe Blacc

perfectlypickled · 22/09/2022 01:53

Might she have videoed him dancing to the song ?

transformandriseup · 22/09/2022 02:00

I thought of Father and Son, the Ronan Keeting version with Cat Stevens.

Can she narrow down it it was early 2000 or maybe much more recent?

Eric Clapton Tears in Heaven?

LunaLoveLemon · 22/09/2022 02:34

FourFiveSeconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney?
Probably not but that’s where my head went initially.

Also worth checking out this list and looking at the songs with other artists? Ed Sheeran has done loads of duets with grime artists, DnB artists, rappers etc.

Shame, by Robbie Williams & Gary?

I wondered this too.

VolcanicProtectorMan · 22/09/2022 04:17

I also thought Avicii, Hey Brother is acoustic. Not a duet though, just the first song I thought of with your description

Could you search your browser history (not YouTube)? Open the history library, search term YouTube and then select the relevant dates for when it was played (eg all months in 2019).

ZombieMumEB · 22/09/2022 05:36

Does she have a youtube account? Could she have subscribed to it?

Could she have bookmarked it? Shared a link on facebook or messenger?

WatchoRulo · 22/09/2022 07:31

Not much help but wondering if it might be a Paulo Nutini song - he seems to have a done a few duets

psychomath · 22/09/2022 07:44

I was gonna suggest You're My Waterloo by the Libertines but I'm not sure it's a song you'd do a jig to! Can she remember anything about the mood of the song - slow/fast, happy/sad etc?

AgnesNaismith · 22/09/2022 07:52

White stripes - Hotel Yorba?

Vaccineerror · 22/09/2022 13:14

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. No match so far and we are now quietly trying to forget about it to avoid going crazy. Will of course update if the song is tracked down…

Could it be something by Jack Johnson. He does some acoustic guitar, and he wrote the music for the Curious George film, probably 2005ish. One of the songs is called We're Going to be Friends. I LOVE Jack Johnson, and my kids have all enjoyed the CG soundtrack! My kids would have definitely done a jig.

Even if I’m wrong, go listen!

I thought this too
