Diana and Charles Questions

So this is not a AIBU but it's an ATBU for are THEY being unreasonable.

I have seen a lot of you tube shorts marking the 25 year death of Lady Diana Spencer/the princess. They say she was a devoted mum and participated in the boys' school events, gave them macdonald's ect. Was a lovely, normal mum. I don't dispute that. Even though she died just before I was born so i hardly know anything about her, i think she is amazing and did not deserve to die. That brings me on to how some people said she wrote in her diary that she thought Charles was planning to kill her (staging an accident) so he could marry Camilla and that she knew something was wrong with the brakes in her car. For any of you who don't know, she died in a car accident in Paris on August 31rd 1997.

She was the people's princess and adored by all, she was one of us as her children went to public schools, she dressed casual. ect.

I also have some questions:

  • Where was Diana buried, I know she had a state funeral thing?
  • Did Diana see her kids much after the divorce?
  • If Diana was alive now, what would her position be?
  • Charles did not mention Diana in his becoming king speech - he could have said 'And the boys' mother who taught them so much' or something - do you think he should have?

YABU: They are being unreasonable and Charles did not order Diana's murder
YANBU: They are not being unreasonable and Charles did order Diana's murder

Public schools were so called because they were an alternative to the private tutoring that sons of aristocrats used to have. But they were still private and fee paying.

The only reason people say Harry looks like James Hewitt is the ginger hair, never mind the fact that both Diana,s brother and sister have ginger hair, personally I think Harry looks like Charles .

I agree and Philip too.

All this people’s princess etc is a load of bollocks.

The love for Diana emerged after her death mainly because of how she was hounded by the press.

But the tide had turned against her long before that. If she’d still been alive she would have hopefully faded into obscurity by now.

And wtf should Charles have mentioned in his speech?

Well that’s all bollocks! Are you old enough to properly remember those times? I am. She was extremely popular right from when she first got married, one of the issues in their marriage was his jealousy of how much the public adored her. Then her work for vulnerable people homeless/HIV/ the land mine work, all of that endeared her to everyone really.

On her family estate - Althorp in Northamptonshire. She didn't have a state funeral

She did have a pretty big funeral in Westminster Abbey though. Might as well have been a state funeral.

But it wasn't.

MyLovelyPen · 21/09/2022 07:34

This country spent millions on a ludicrous inquiry to try and quash these ridiculous rumours around Diana’s death, She died because she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt - she’s one of the best adverts for wearing a seatbelt imaginable. Tragic.

I didn’t get the adoration some people had for her as I thought both her and Charles were terrible. Neither of them
covered themselves in glory. She was pretty though and that counts for a lot, plus she knew how to work the media to her advantage. I don’t believe she was murdered.

oakleaffy · 21/09/2022 07:38

I met Princess Diana, and upon meeting another member of the Blood Royal Family, I was advised specifically 'Not to mention Princess Diana''

Not that I would have, bit of the two...I loved Diana more... She had a warmth and an immediacy that people responded to.

Womencanlift · 21/09/2022 07:39

OP she didn’t have a state funeral - it was a ceremonial one, same as the Queen Mother. In fact it was her plans they used because that had been rehearsed

I get that you are trying to understand more but perhaps you should do some more research before coming on a predominately British site with so many inaccuracies (I am assuming you are not British because of your wording)

This. The one person in the car wearing a seatbelt, Dodi Fayed’s bodyguard, survived the crash albeit with serious head injuries.

KenAdams · 21/09/2022 07:39

Are you very young or American? Most of the facts you ask, conspiracy aside are imprinted on my mind from when it happened, the queues to visit Althorpe etc.

MyLovelyPen · 21/09/2022 07:39

@SudocremOnEverything that’s brilliant 😂

This. I also cannot see how she was murdered, but I reckon some members of the royal household expressed a very muted sigh of relief when she died.

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/09/2022 07:41

The public perception of Diana was much more complicated than it became after her death. Admired for her charity work, certainly, but no where near the saintly levels it became. At least one of the papers had already gone to press with negative headlines the night she died and had to pull them, the Basheer interview harmed both her and Charles... She wasn't universally adored at all

EdithWeston · 21/09/2022 07:41

Where was Diana buried, I know she had a state funeral thing?

  • She didn't have a state funeral, she had a royal ceremonial funeral, followed by private burial on an island at her family's estate.

Did Diana see her kids much after the divorce?

  • yes
  • her children went to public schools - guessing you're not in UK? Public school means a private, independent school and the Princes both went to Eton, which is one of the very poshest

If Diana was alive now, what would her position be?

  • she would continue as Diana Princess of Wales (a style given to her at the time of her divorce, which she would hold for life or until remarriage. It is not the same as HRH The Princess of Wales - the title Camilla held (but did not use) which is now held and used by Catherine, wife of Prince William

Charles did not mention Diana in his becoming king speech - he could have said 'And the boys' mother who taught them so much' or something - do you think he should have?

  • absolutely not
Bikeybikeface · 21/09/2022 07:42

Op, are you my mum? She has an unnatural love for Diana, Diana couldn’t put a foot wrong in her eyes.

Because people always die in car crashes. Always. 🤣

She did have a pretty big funeral in Westminster Abbey though. Might as well have been a state funeral.

She had a “ceremonial” funeral, the last state funeral before HM this week was Winston Churchill I believe.

Her position now, had she lived would probably be “awkward thorn in the side”😂

knittingaddict · 21/09/2022 07:45

Can't be your mum. The op sounds very young or very ill informed.

Could be one of those faux naive posts to get us talking about yet another bloody CT. Sick of them personally.

Pyewhacket · 21/09/2022 07:47

Diana Spencer was a highly privileged, rather dim, manipulative, borderline psychiatric, international clothes horse who seemed unable to use the common sense she was born with. It was tragic that she died so young but she should have taken responsibility for herself. Rather than playing puerile games with the paps and a wastrel playboy.

Agreed, it did not. Some could see through her

wherethewildthingis · 21/09/2022 06:59

Not sure if you're in UK, but public school here means private school- the boys went to a fee paying exclusive school. Princess Diana was poorly treated at times but behaved equally badly herself at times. She had many good qualities but many negative qualities too, she was not a paragon of virtue.

This.

There were absolutely mistakes on all sides of this.

The marriage was arranged for all intents and purposes. The royal family back then was much more set in tradition than it is now.

One of the things that made the queen popular was she held up her hands and admitted the mistakes made and made changes.

It's still a very traditional institution and we won't change much of that.

But those who think Diana was some innocent victim only read one source of media!

Grumpypants78 · 21/09/2022 07:50

If the RF had ordered her killed they wouldn't have staged a car crash which she could have survived. Too much can go wrong trying to kill someone that way. If she'd been wearing a seatbelt she'd likely have survived. You only know the hype about her which has grown since her death and she's become a saint. In real life she was deeply troubled and suffered MH issues. She wasn't very bright or worldly wise when she married and both Charles and Diana treated each other like shit.
