Being told I look middle class

On a rare date night went out for a nice meal a bit fancy but it was OH birthday treat and went to a sports bar which had good music before we got the train home. I'm quite reserved and a bit uncomfortable in big settings so being in a city Center sports bar on a Saturday night was definitely out of my comfort zone, a very bubbly woman was chatting to me at the bar while we had drinks very out there but I found her really funny and we had a giggle, mid conversation she turned and said you look like you are very middle class, I just laughed in off not really knowing what she meant, I'm curious to know what she actually meant by this, just wondering if I give off a weird vibe for her to think this as I'm guessing it's not a compliment I think I took it as I am/look stuck up which is far from the truth so I would hate to give out that vibe!

Only person who can really explain it is Ms Bubbly
As a generalisation middle class to Boden, Me+Em,Toast clothes. Highlights and straightened hair. Kids called Josh, Olly, Sophie. Obsession with house prices and schools

wizzywig · 17/09/2022 22:13

Were you in a suit ?

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 17/09/2022 22:14

Why don’t you ask her rather than a bunch of randoms who were not there? How very odd of you,

oopsfellover · 17/09/2022 22:14

She might have thought you seemed a bit ‘posher’ than her…?

I could of done but that sadly wouldn't entertain me as much on the train ride home

Ah ok, makes sense I thought everyone lived a good nosey at house prices!

What were you wearing? Do you have a posh accent?

my DH has a fairly posh accent and he gets reverse snobbery sometimes, it’s actually quite annoying! Some people at school actively look a bit off when he starts speaking! He told me about it and I didn’t believe it until I saw it with my own eyes.

SmileyClare · 17/09/2022 22:22

Likely based on what you were wearing.

I would forget it, I’m sure she has. She was probably off her tits and talking shit 😂

TheHateIsNotGood · 17/09/2022 22:23

Aah - just a little noticement of mine over time - are you well groomed in an understated way? Really no judgement from me but that can often signify MC from some perspectives.

No need for any pile on for suggesting this as it's just something I've noticed over time - not the actual differences between individuals but how some different individuals interact with each other.

pawkins · 17/09/2022 22:26

She might have meant you are dressed sensibly, she thought you'd be a bore and she didn't think she'd have a giggle with you. I wouldn't take 'middle class' as a compliment tbh and I'm pleased you had a good evening and laughter with her.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 17/09/2022 22:29

You can't be middle class if you say 'could of.'

NameChangeLifeChange · 17/09/2022 22:31

I wouldn’t overthink it @hasitreallybeenthatlong !
Out of interest what were you wearing/ what’s your hairstyle etc?

I almost posted this.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/09/2022 22:33

You don't look poor and your look is middle-of-the-road.

Calphurnia88 · 17/09/2022 22:35

What were you wearing OP? I'm intrigued.

I assume she just meant you look a bit posh. I don't think it's a compliment, but I don't think it's an insult either.

Zone2NorthLondon · 17/09/2022 23:01

A sports bar? Did you think the hunt master would be in there? Were you carrying a bridle?

Yeah, don't fret @hasitreallybeenthatlong you do NOT come across as middle class at ALL!

BadNomad · 17/09/2022 23:50

I hate it when that happens! Every time I pick up an avocado someone bubbly comes over to tell me how middle class I look.

Somegirlsarebiggerthanother · 17/09/2022 23:54

DH is middle class. He says could of. I’m working class. I say could’ve. “Could of” irritates me, but after 20 years I can’t bear to tell dh

UWhatNow · 17/09/2022 23:59

If she was rough AF she may not even know what being ‘middle class’ actually means. People where I live would think you were middle class if you have a job and talk about the news.

Butchyrestingface · 17/09/2022 23:59

Do you have all of your own teeth?

StoneofDestiny · 18/09/2022 00:01

Amazing how people so readily shuffle themselves into 'classes'. Geez - no wonder we've still got a Monarchy!

She could of done at the time though. It’s all relative.
