Being told I look middle class

On a rare date night went out for a nice meal a bit fancy but it was OH birthday treat and went to a sports bar which had good music before we got the train home. I'm quite reserved and a bit uncomfortable in big settings so being in a city Center sports bar on a Saturday night was definitely out of my comfort zone, a very bubbly woman was chatting to me at the bar while we had drinks very out there but I found her really funny and we had a giggle, mid conversation she turned and said you look like you are very middle class, I just laughed in off not really knowing what she meant, I'm curious to know what she actually meant by this, just wondering if I give off a weird vibe for her to think this as I'm guessing it's not a compliment I think I took it as I am/look stuck up which is far from the truth so I would hate to give out that vibe!

again

Cam22 · 18/09/2022 21:47

The OP

was not wearing:

a clingy “top” with glittery thread woven into it
a short “Bodycon” skirt
a few blingy gold rings
tottering heels
powerfully strong scent like Opium

or displaying:

delightful butterfly tattoos
a lot of cleavage + butterfly
unnatural straightened sticky-out hair
a trout pout
fillers

etc

I have to tell you that sadly, you are NOT middle class. Anyone who says "I could OF.." has no class at all Grin

🤣🤣🤣

Agree.

Although 'could of' is used so widely now that your statement means at least 50% of the people I meet/work with have no class ...

SimonaRazowska · 18/09/2022 22:19

Anyone who dares to think they are middle class will be gunned down by the key board warriors of MN

As witnessed on this thread

But why is this?!

You think you are middle class? Die bitch die!

VestaTilley · 18/09/2022 22:24

I’d take it as a compliment, it probably means she thought you looked smartly dressed.

forageintheforest · 18/09/2022 23:35

If you say "could of" instead of "could have" you are not middle class.
Yes I know miow miow.

I think it's more multi faceted than that. The OP is making up presenting a scenario about class mores and gets it wrong so has her arse handed to her.

I once got asked in Morrisons if I was Italian. I was buying mozzarella but am definitely not Italian. Nor do I think I look Italian.

Bizarre but think every every person in the world would agree that saying your Italian is meant as a compliment because Italians are stereotyped worldwide as stunning. I think all humans are beautiful. But that's A compliment

Hastingsontheup · 19/09/2022 06:05

It's amazing what people think passes for middle class and posh. Upshot is you are born middle class. You are not born working class and then become middle class because you get a university degree, buy your own house and get into lower management in your job. You are still working class

This is patently nonsense. Is Carole Middleton working class ? Any doctor or teacher automatically becomes middle class- they have to. It works the other way too, DB is the son of a teacher and a civil servant, he fucked up his A levels does a vocational job and lives with a hair dresser, he was born middle, both no.one would think that now.

Although he may still have RP he wouldn't fit in to middle class circles....

You can't be middle class if you say 'could of.'

That’s why thought but darent say it 🙈

gingerchai · 19/09/2022 07:03

Why did you husband take you to a sports bar on a date? Ridiculous,

I would love to actually look Italian. In my head all Italian ladies are pretty, slim, have beautiful olive skin, long, thick dark hair.

Other than dark hair, I definitely don’t fit that image so it was a weird thing to say.

Because it’s obviously just a nonsense thread geared towards the class obsessives on here so they can jump up to frantically type such nonsense as ‘you must have looked slim, you didn’t have fillers etc etc. You didn’t look like the fat dirty sloppy working classes!’

Because if someone in real life randomly approached you in a bar and coyly giggled ‘oh tee hee you look middle class’ you’d immediately say ‘excuse me? I don’t understand, what are you talking about?’ What you wouldn’t do would be jump on mumsnet to ask random people what this person could possibly have meant without elaborating on what you were doing or wearing or what you were talking about previously, because if she said this out of nowhere she’s obviously just a nutter, and if she said it after you asked ‘do you think I look middle class’ then you’re obviously just a nutter.

Perhaps because some consider discussing class to be very vulgar.

antelopevalley · 19/09/2022 12:27

Those with money consider discussing money to be vulgar. First rule of class inequality? Don't talk about class inequality.

I have very little money and I’d still find it really really weird if s stranger came up to me in a bar and said ‘oh you look like you make about 40k.’

It’s weird (and let’s be honest never happened) to tell strangers that they ‘look middle class.’ It’s socially abnormal behaviour, and it has nothing to do with discussing class inequality.

Yes I know miow miow.

That’s a fact. It’s not bitchiness. If you have been properly educated and come from an environment where people talk properly, you would never say that or write that. It doesn’t make sense for a start.

People who say “could of” instead of “could have” clearly have no idea what a verb is because they are using a preposition in its place. Prepositions are obviously a mystery to them, too.

Wrong.

Amazing how people so readily shuffle themselves into 'classes'. Geez - no wonder we've still got a Monarchy!

This! I have no desire to belong to a class.

That’s because it is vulgar. To use the old cliché - money does not buy you class.

AgnestaVipers · 20/09/2022 10:37

Would anyone in a Sports Bar be middle class? I feel that's unlikely.

Octomore · 20/09/2022 10:45

Gwenhwyfar · 18/09/2022 15:14

Until now, I didn't realise anyone said could have. It always sounds like could of to me (or maybe could 'uhv' even if we write could have. It's understandable that some people write it 'could of' if they don't understand where it comes from grammatically.

It sounds like 'of' or 'uhv' because it's: could've

It's a contraction of "could have".

A pp is correct though - anyone who has learned to speak and write correctly would recognise that "could of" makes no sense at all, and wouldn't make that mistake.

Fatballs · 20/09/2022 10:49

Amazing how people so readily shuffle themselves into 'classes'

I didn’t realise it was still a thing until I came on MN.
