Being told I look middle class

On a rare date night went out for a nice meal a bit fancy but it was OH birthday treat and went to a sports bar which had good music before we got the train home. I'm quite reserved and a bit uncomfortable in big settings so being in a city Center sports bar on a Saturday night was definitely out of my comfort zone, a very bubbly woman was chatting to me at the bar while we had drinks very out there but I found her really funny and we had a giggle, mid conversation she turned and said you look like you are very middle class, I just laughed in off not really knowing what she meant, I'm curious to know what she actually meant by this, just wondering if I give off a weird vibe for her to think this as I'm guessing it's not a compliment I think I took it as I am/look stuck up which is far from the truth so I would hate to give out that vibe!

She thought you were a bit dull.

Maireas · 18/09/2022 08:56

Anyway, next time you go out, put the Daily Telegraph away and leave the Labrador at home.

cultkid · 18/09/2022 08:58

Sounds like she was trying to compliment you lol

Are you insecure about where you sit socially?

Think it was just a bit of a weird compliment probably to do with your accent, maybe what you were chatting about like your hobbies or your experience of life in general

Do you struggle to read people?

Where you wearing any Olives/Quinoa/Hummus?
Dead giveaway I'm afraid.

I know a very posh lady (landed, titles, estate been owned by family for hundreds of years) she only ever wears dog hair, home made cranberry jelly and an Alice band. Less try hard than the middle class look.

Can afford dental treatment?

Do you mean the items of food all over clothing?

Blinky21 · 18/09/2022 09:42

The vast majority of people in the UK now fall into the middle class so it's nor really an insult. I think most of the examples given in this thread are of the upper middle class

5128gap · 18/09/2022 09:53

I imagine the way you were dressed was a bit conservative or smart by comparison with the other punters. An outfit for a meal would be different from one most people would wear in the bar, if I'm imagining the venue correctly, especially if you walked in with your coat on and handbag amongst all the women dressed down (or up) for going out out. If you were, as you say, out of your comfort zone you might have appeared a bit on edge which people could interpret as thinking you thought you were too good for the place.

pimlicoanna · 18/09/2022 09:56

I get told I look French. I'm not

Sports bar?

Like a wetherspoons?

There's a fairly naff 'sports bar' at Marylebone. Usually pretty empty bar a few tired looking travellers getting a pint before their train.

gogohmm · 18/09/2022 10:00

There's middle class and middle England ... middle class is simply down to your job, yes we firmly fall into this category (A on the old scale, elite on the newer one) that's just fact but we don't Rick that middle England look because it's just not us, you'll find us drinking beer, in jeans or at gigs in rock clubs

PlattyJubes · 18/09/2022 10:06

After all the crazy threads on here over the last week may I be the first to congratulate you OP. You know that the world is still turning and that everything is back in it's rightful place when the old Middle Class bashing thread is back on MN 😁

@Housenoob i was just wondering exactly the same thing about Walkabout bars. Do they still exist? I’m not sure I’ve seen one in years. Maybe OP is at Center Parcs and means the Sport Cafe?

OP, maybe just the fact you are calling a pub a sports bar made you seem middle class.

There's still one in Brighton, @HappyRhino .

HairyMothballs · 18/09/2022 10:39

I have to tell you that sadly, you are NOT middle class. Anyone who says "I could OF.." has no class at all Grin

Iamnotthe1 · 18/09/2022 10:42

I was once told, by a 10yo child in my class, that I was "posh" because I had pets but didn't have animal hair on my clothes 😂

Imissmoominmama · 18/09/2022 10:44

I went for a job interview and was introduced to the team of two I’d be working with.

After about a month there, they said that they’d thought I was very middle class when they first met me, but now they’d worked with me for a while, they realised I was ‘normal’ 😂.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 17/09/2022 22:29

You can't be middle class if you say 'could of.'

^^^^

This!

hewouldwouldnthe · 18/09/2022 11:03

"Could of". Nah..

Angelinflipflops · 18/09/2022 11:13

Me & em is really expensive

NCFT0922 · 18/09/2022 11:28

@BadNomad middle class does not mean richer than working class.

OP, she thought you looked a bore and probably grumpy. She was surprised she was having a laugh with you.

NCFT0922 · 18/09/2022 11:28
  • frumpy not grumpy
Hbh17 · 18/09/2022 11:37

What's wrong with being middle-class? That term covers the majority of the population, so is very broad and general.
It is definitely not "posh" either, which is a rather downmarket term - truly upper class people would say "smart" instead.

Cam22 · 18/09/2022 11:38

hasitreallybeenthatlong · 17/09/2022 22:16

I could of done but that sadly wouldn't entertain me as much on the train ride home

“ I could of done…” ???

You are definitely not middle class. If you were you would be familiar with proper English grammar…
